Recorded this on cassette tape from a dear friend of mine in the early 80s.I found the compilation album a few years back.I was so happy to have my own!!.
Fantastic psychedelic 60's mind-blower!!!!! Had this song on a cassette tape that I recorded ("It's a Happening") from a great college friend. Got to hear the flip of this A&M single entitled: "Never More." Definitely is a great song as well. Pam K36 posted that the lyric ("Its a Happening") "A mushroom hangs above the ground" may refer to the atomic bomb. I had never thought of that-- indeed, she's right. Thank you for sharing this far-out masterpiece!!!
Along with "Tomorrow Never Knows" and other great psychedelic tunes of this era, "It's a Happening" pulls the listener out of passivity into active engagement with the psychedelic experience.
Its sad that the government forced them to stop making music under the name The Magic Mushrooms. Especially during a time when people had enough balls to fight for freedom!
The Magic Mushrooms were an American psychedelic garage rock band in the 1960s. The Magic Mushrooms were originally composed of five students from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. They named themselves The Magic Mushrooms after Allen Ginsberg suggested that name during an on-campus lecture in the fall of 1965. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magic_Mushrooms
This group might have went further except they were on the wrong label. At the time it was run by it's original founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and they only signed soft pop acts. I believe the Mushrooms were dropped after just one album. It wasn't until 1970 when the label probably realized how much money they were missing out on and thus they had harder acts such as Free on their roster.
The problem was this band was on the wrong label. A & M was mostly for soft pop and light rock in the 1960s. I was lucky to find a 45 in excellent shape off e-bay a few years back.
Is this still available only on vinyl? Have their recordings ever been converted to audio cd? I know that there is a compilation album from 1972 entitled "Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965- 1968," I'm wondering if The Magic Mushrooms themselves have an album available on audio cd? Every time I look, all I keep finding are albums from The Magic Mushroom Band, which formed in 1982, no relation to this band except for the similar name ....
When Herb Alpert of A&M Records found out what "magic mushrooms" were, he pulled the record off the market[6] because the band would not change their name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magic_Mushrooms
Peaked at just No. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. A very unique song.
Just "unique," which is ALREADY one of a kind.

Mind blown.
Groovy.

True words !! Psychedelia will NEVER die !!!
I see no evidence that the government intervened with what the band called themselves. What's your source?

I had this 45 when I was a kid and liked the song even though I had no idea what it was about LOL!
Heard this song back in 1966. Was too young for the stoner scene. Thought (and still think) it had a Zen, sort of Japanese vibe.

Hoss,
you are right. A & M Records was a soft pop/adult contemporary label.
The Carpenters were signed to A&M
Lekker wild, met zo'n heerlijk wrakkig jaren '60-orgeltje...
