I am trying to learn this in the correct positions, but I do sneak in an open D here and there while I'm getting my shift set up :D Totally get you though, my only golden rule is though... No ascending open E's longer than a crotchet. "Use the 4th (finger) Luke."
But agree. Nice sounding 1st pos is better than wonky 3rd. But we gotta rip off those training wheels one day. And this is a beauty to take that journey with.
