i was born in 2002, and i wish i was born in that time. this generation lacks love and kindess so much, people are so focused on materialistic items and how much money they have. all i want is to go back to the late 60s into the 70s and experience that hippie phase

One thing that comes to mind when people talk about '60s music is harmonies. I wish modern pop music had that but with so much reliance on technical production and beats there's not much room for actual singing anymore.

Gentlemen : Allow me to orient you, as to just what it is, you're seeing & hearing. This is of course, the recorded version of the song written by John & Michelle Phillips, in the winter of '63 /'64, as they lived in NYC. What you're SEEING , is the group's appearance at the legendary Monterrey Pop Festival, in the summer of 1967, THE Summer of Love. Before Woodstock, there was, " Monterrey Pop " John Phillips , who wrote their original music, arranged & produced. he's the very tall guy, at 6'5". Denny Doherty was a tenor, & did most lead vocals. Cass Elliott was a contralto with range ; she's the heavy one, & Michelle Phillips, is the blonde--------blondish, TOTAL , DROP-DEAD, KNOCKOUT , who sang soprano. Released in 11/65, it went to # 4 on Billboard, by March of '66. ---And gents, you really do owe it to yourselves, to hear the Beach Boys 1986 version of this classic. it is one of MY all-time Top 10 songs, ever. Check it out , with Roger McGuinn playing his legendary Rickenbacker 370 12 string , with the " jingle jangle " sound . ----------MJL, 76 y/o

Yes, you’re feeling the vibe of that time. I can tell you about it because I was a bona fide hippie back then. It was a time of peace and love and freedom we were ringing in the Aquarian age and there was a spiritual wave that came through. I hope this music inspires a lot of people.

There was a period of time where folk music and singer/songwriters really blossomed from the mid 1950s through the early 1970s. Many of the great musicians come up through this (eg Bob Dylan) or were profoundly influenced. It is a wonderful genre to explore. Influenced by bluegrass, country, blues, gospel and other earlier genres as well. A few suggestions:
Arlo Guthrie, early Bob Dylan, Neil Young.

The beautiful woman, Michelle Phillips, is the only one in the group that is still alive. She lives in the LA area, and yes, she is an old lady now, a grandmother. She was married to John Phillips, the group's main songwriter (the guy playing guitar with the funny hat), and also had an affair with Denny Doherty, the guy who was singing lead. One of their big hits, "I Saw Her Again Last Night" was about this awkward love triangle. You could say they were the original Fleetwood Mac in this regard.

Every so often a song will capture everything about an era and this is one of them. There's a reason it's still so loved and will always be but this song goes further. There's something weird about it, it makes you fell weird as well as nostalgic for a time you never experienced. The group did some other decent songs but California Dreamin' is lightning in a bottle.

When I hear this group it's 1966 and I am back in the wonderful care free days of my life set to really great music. John Phillips helped promote the Monterey International Pop Music Festival in 1967. There is a concert film which the video you just played is from. It was a fantastic time to be around in the mid to late sixties (sadly I was not). There was so much optimism and it shone through in the music of the time. LA with the Laurel Canyon scene was a real creative community that included the Mamas and Papas , Crosby Stills and Nash, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds and Joni Mitchell. Sadly all great eras end and the Laurel Canyon collective ended with the Manson Murders a couple of miles across the Canyon in LA.

I believe we have all lived many lives before and George, you very well could have lived during that period. I meditated myself back to another life and saw how I died. It wasn't traumatic. It was as if I was watching a movie. Anyway, Michelle Phillips was absolutely beautiful and she was naturally that way. She is still alive and you can see what she looks like now. Her daughter has a RUclips channel called Cal Preach. Her name is Chynna Phillips Baldwin. She sang with a group called Wilson~Phillips. She's a little different, but her mother is in some of the videos and they will be titled so you can tell what you're looking for. Remember, we don't all stay young and beautiful, but it's what's on the inside that counts.

Gosh, I haven't heard this song for years! Used to listen to it a lot - fab song, blimey, I was singing along as I can still remember all the words! Monday, Monday and Dream a Little Dream of Me are other great songs by them. I remember being at school then and we all knew these songs. They are so familiar and we used to hear them all the time back in the day. George, music can sometimes awaken something in you that you think or feel you've experienced before because it's so beautiful - music is just so powerful isn't it and this song is just gorgeous. Thanks so much for reacting to this guys, cheers.

Back in the day, short and sweet was the only way to get airplay! Being a young California kid when this came out, I loved it! The harmonies! And I was able to sing soprano to it during my junior high school choir class....later, in the 70s. I am truly saddened that young people today aren't offered the arts in public schools, not as much anyways. The 60s was a cornucopia of musical styles! Thank you for sharing!

No countries come close to the US and UK when it comes to Music...weather you like them or not the world would be a sad place without them....

This song and their song "Monday Monday" were two of the best by them. We are still hearing them today.

For more great vocals check out Spanky and Our Gang - Lazy Day and Sunday Will Never Be The Same and another group Peppermint Rainbow singing Will You Be Staying After Sunday. All these songs give off the same iconic sixties sound vibe. You will love them all!
