Thought you might like my ES295 story - when I was in 8th grade and just gotten what I could afford - 1954 maroon silvertone - one of the high school guys had a 1953 ES295 which was so beautiful and so different from the usual guitars of the time - fast forward to 1966 my first year of teaching in San Antonio TX - I found a used 1957 Les Paul Custom and a very early 295 for sale in the want ads - I paid 150.00 for each which at the time (1966) was pretty pricey - the 295 was pretty banged up so I sent it off to Gibson for a refinish, a gold Bigsby installed and the fingerboard replaced with a 22 fret ebony LP Custom fingerboard and switched out the bridge and tuners for gold - Gibson did a beautiful job - then in 1974 my house was broken into and both those guitars were stolen - but not the cases, just the guitars - so over the years and once the internet started I would do a guitar search for the 295 because of the distinctive fingerboard - I never found it, but summer of 2018, a friend of mine was guitar cruising on the net and spotted it in a guitar store in New York - I had to buy it back which I was happy to do and now 44 years later she's back in her original case and with only a handful of dings to show for it - the original serial number on the headstock got deleted in the refinish, but the Gibson tag inside the body reads "A-16503" - I feel really lucky as I'm pretty sure most stolen guitars never make it home - (pics are available if you would like to see them)

That was ten years ago now & I never got any of them back but it made me more determined to buy replacements (either that or I just use it as a good excuse to the missus as to why I always need yet another guitar lol)
Hanging a strap off one tuning peg is putting a lot of tension on a tiny shaft, why not use a string behind the nut like we do on acoustics. Pretty guitar, nice signature model.
Actually as a country boy myself I love me some Scotty Moore and Ernest Tubb and the Carter family and Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash and Luther Perkins and Hank Williams Buddy Holly and of course Elvis Presley

This is the favourite guitar of MY favourite atmospheric guitarist, Geordie Walker of Killing Joke, who-if you know their music-might blow your mind that he’s playing a giant archtop hollowbody. I don’t play half as noisy as he, and I need a centre-block!
I was indeed suprised to see Walker with it. I'm also thinking about Black Francis, he used to have a '93 reissue with P-100 pick-ups (they look exactly like P-90s dog ear, but with two bobins stacked vertically instead of one) and a Bigsby. You can see it on the "Alec Eiffel" video.I think these reissues are even more rare than the period ones.
I learned to play on a vintage ES175. A 1964 with a single neck humbucker, and a wooden bridge. Plucking out Nirvana and Green Day on that thing. It was my brothers, who was in college for music at the time. He started college majoring in jazz guitar but switch to jazz piano half way through. Being obsessed with piano left all his guitar gear free for me to use. I wasn’t supposed to use the 175, but that made me want to play it even more. I played that guitar when things were starting to come together for me on guitar. That guitar had the best neck ever. My brother still has it.
This guitar is great, but if I were going to own a Scotty Moore it would be a reissue Super 400 that Elvis played in the ‘68 Comeback. I’m sure they would make 68 of them and they’d be $19,680 and I’d never find them available, but still.
I like when you use Trogly-vision to look inside the instrument. That bridge is insane with its ability to set intonation. Thanks for the wonderful video. Too bad there is that dent.
What a beaut of a guitar, As you’ve mentioned this thing is made to typically be played on the lower frets and more cowboy chorded areas but that’s where they mostly played back in that era anyhow. These hollowbody Gibsons sound amazing. Izzy played that white ES-175 for years during G 'n R's rise to global superstardom & I love his tone. I've got a 335 but never had a full hollowbody & I reckon it's high time I checked one out.
These ES-295's and the ES-175's are hands down my absolute favourite guitars. I just love that full hollow body with f holes and the Florentine cutaway. Even the thinner ES-125's are great.

The best guitars Gibson ever made, IMO, was the ES-295 and the Byrdland. Ill never be able to afford either one, but I can still love them from afar. Lol. Scotty is from here in West Tennessee, about 3 counties north of me. His grave is about a 50 mile drive. Still havent gone to visit him yet, but hopefully I will be able to one day, if my health improves. Thanks Austin!
That hump in the top looks like what happens when the body sinks around the neck. I had a 1963 es-125 TC (I believe that's the proper model designation. Thin single pup cutaway) that had what looks like the same thing on the top and that's what it was from. The body actually sank around the neck. how tall the neck is away from the body doesn't look natural either. It might have been something that happened to his they copied on the reissue of it.

I’m glad that you found what you were looking for. Signed guitars are emotionally difficult for me. Once it’s signed, I don’t know what to do. Every working guitar needs to be played, not left in a vault.

i know gibson does reinforcement with cloth (they soak cloth in glue and adhere that to sensitive points of the bracing) on acoustics, those black strips could be the same?
Ironic that I was hunting for the Epiphone version last night (again)... gonna have to track me one down eventually, but finding a clean one isn't easy! I don't really care about the Gibsons at all, grew up wanting the Epiphone guitars and having advertisements of those on my wall/locker, and never got into Gibsons. I'm a '77 Ibanez guy and Korean Epiphone junkie (with a few Gretsch, US Peaveys, a Fender, etc).
DÜDE!! Nice strap improv. You could try a velcro gear tie strap around the truss cover, under strings (obv.), or string. You could stick 3" thing under case at handle edge, to tip it back -back lean keep lid from floppin' down. But what a dream boat - aspirational. Ü
I have a 1956 ES 295 that I love except that it has the original frets which are the small ones-not good for bending and playing blues. I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of frets are on this one-they look to be larger than what I have on mine. Thanks
I enjoy Joel Patersons playing and tones on that model. I am a metal, Blues, Any type of rock any period classical music, Mexican and indian music, reggae and more guy and I am very familiar with Scotty. I think you have to be if you follow who inspired you all the way back and even before to the old blues guys.
I'm an Epi guy and there were few times i took a look at "real" Gibson just to be shocked how bad the finish was. The worn red studio Les Paul was just ugly comparing to my Epi:) And ES 295 is my dream, and no "Scotty this, Scotty that". Geordie Walker is my god of ES 295:)
The Guitar at 2:15 is not an L-5 .. but a super 400.... He used the ES-295 from 53-55 then the L-5 from 55-57 the Super 400 from 57-63 Then the famous Sunburst florentine cutaway from 63-85.....same one Elvis stole off him during the 68 comeback special lol ...scotty apparently wasn't overly happy with this swap for the show as Scotty was super careful with his Guitars ...and seeing Elvis Man handle his baby..didn't give him a good feeling ....... Scotty played plenty of other guitars after this period util he passed away in 2016 .. including an epiphone spartan, a 94 Yamaha AEX 1500 , A fender Esquire......before going back to using Gibson's .I met Scotty a couple of times when he came of to the U.K in early 2000's ....super nice guy....he signed my copy of his Biography 'That's alright Elvis' about his career and time with the King..as well as afterwards .......A True Rock and Roll legend .....
The only other player that I’ve seen that is a notable ES-295 player is Bryan Adams….As he has gotten older, he’s been favoring that guitar as one of his main stage guitars.

That chip on the front is brutal. Can imagine your disappointment upon opening the case for the first time.

Great find! Scotty Moore was a big influence on me.
You could also tie the neck end of the strap around and under the foot of the neck, like Paul McCartney did with his early Hofner.

I think Geordie Walker (Killing Joke) plays a 295. A very distinct, very cool sound you wouldn’t expect.

ES-295's had as their original tailpiece the same kind of awkward deal that early Les Pauls had...the combo string stop and bridge trapeze thingy.

100 bucks for that chip is criminal. the whole top would have to be refinished to fix it properly and that is where the signature is .
