Strange focus on cleaning the gas tank, which would have been the least of the worries in a real storage case. Carburetor disassembly would be square one.
I had a Toyota Celica that did actually experience a Lazarus revival after a yard sit of that amount of time. But it was fuel injected, and also was filled with pure gasoline rather than the ethanol laced gas that government saddled everyone with. Just with a battery replacement, it cranked and ran like it was last started the day before. But this is not that.
I went to start my honda motorcycle which had not be used in several months. It cranked for almost a minute before the battery died. I then jumped it with my suv and it eventually started. But the battery is now 100% dead and will not take a charge at all. How did it go from having enough juice to dead and can't be recharged in under 1 minute? LOL... So one thing you should always always check before running is the carburetor. If it’s gunked up, you do not want to put anything through it until it’s fully clean.
I hope you meant to say Choke and Carb cleaner. Parts cleaner has methanol in it and that eats the plastic and rubber seals inside the carb/engine. It also dries out, whereas the Carb cleaner leaves nice film to help Lube and protect the components. Not to mention the parts cleaner is poisonous when burned.
@@TheCrystalGlow Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. Usually disconnect the fuel lines and start tearing down/cleaning the carb before ever attempting to start equipment that's not been maintained. They did do one thing right though by cleaning out that gas tank properly 👍
I usually try to fire it up, before tearing the carb down, if it runs fine then there's no need to clean the carburetor. Tearing the carb down is definitely something you should probably do anyway, just to make sure everything is good, but I usually fill the bowl and see if it will run before putting any time and money in to it, If it runs fine, then I don't mess with it.

Speaking from experience here, that gas tank is going to rust back up in no time. The muriatic acid removes the rust and etches the metal to a clean surface but then there is no protective layer so it will flash rust instantly ( I've seen it happen in under 5 minutes after rinsing it with water). Instead of rinsing it with the water, rinse it with a solvent such as mineral spirits and then you must seal the tank right away.
I've been in this situation with an old Honda Big Red ATC. Yes the tank needed to be cleaned out but also the carburetor will be gummed up and need to be cleaned out, possibly rebuilt. There is no way it started up that smoothly with just cleaning out the tank. Something isn't right here.😮
Maybe the tank became contaminated long after it was last run so non of the contamination got to the carburetor. You are right though that remaining gas the carburetor may have solidified making cleaning the carburetor necessary.
I recommend using Citric Acid to clean rust out of a tank. It's much less corrosive and safer to use. Also after muriatic acid you should have neutralized the tank with baking soda and water.
