She was older than me, but we had the same high school English teacher and I attended school with her brother. The day after Janis died, in class, our teacher shared several pieces of art that Janis had done. She was a talented visual artist. Our teacher said she created this character, Pearl, and then "became" that character. She spoke highly of Janis. Once in a lifetime talent.

It is the original pattern of opium addicts ( troubled ) . She would also drink "Southern Comfort" from the bottle. No wonder her liver was shot. She was better off dying from that fix as dying from liver failure is painful, miserable and slow. She did appear a little masculine, in her aggressive performances ; she was showing us her anger and her sadness. I thought her voice was scratchy and vulgar, but there were times when it was just what we wanted to hear. She was unique.

John Cooke (Joplin's road manager) went to Joplin's motel room after producer Paul Rothchild phoned and said Joplin had not arrived for her recording session that day. Cooke said that upon entering Janis's motel room, "I got a strong feeling that nobody was there. Then I came round the corner and saw Janis lying on the floor next to a bed. But that strong feeling that nobody was there, it was absolutely right."

Like a quick kick to the gut. I just felt so sorry for her, died too young. From what I've read and some perceptions of mine, she was a kind, smart, vulnerable person who was lonely - rock life style doing your music doesn't leave you much time for finding relationships. It never fails to amaze me how nasty people can be. High school seems to be harsh for anyone any more, but she was treated so badly most of her life. I mean you'd think the classmates that she had would have grown up by the time she went to her reunion. If I would have known her I would have loved and welcomed her as my friend, and given her a big hug every time she needed one. I would have been proud to have known her. Rest well sweet girl. ❤

Sad story. I like Janis' voice and knew 'The Rose' was loosely based on her life, but didn't realize how sad it was.
Don't know if you are a country/folk Dan, but Lacy J. Dalton has been termed the 'Janis Joplin of country music' because of her voice, which has that whiskey-soaked quality. Definitely worth a listen...

Appreciate all the work you do to pull these fascinating bits together. You should do a piece on Jani Lane from warrant. Found dead in a hotel comfort Inn, near LA. Troubled guy. Amazing singer/songwriter! I'd love to see the hotel and area! Keep up the great explorations.

I heard her music only after she had past. One and only voices that is so energized! I love her music and I really wished I could have followed her music much earlier. One thing I was really a young child back in the 1970s .

That was a very interesting vlog, Jordan. It's so sad that she was so alone all of her life, really, and to die alone. Money and fame can't buy happiness. It would have been great to see the room but nevertheless, it was a very good vlog. Thank you.

She was by herself. That is why she died because she always had somebody with her to watch after her in case something liked that happened. It was totally accidental. She had a loving soul. RIP Janus. We love you.

I’m a professional musician from several generations of musicians and Janice was my hero! She’s always been my inspiration. Yes I grew up the ugly duckling as well. I could relate. I will never forget her. I have done a few songs on RUclips. I want to do some of her songs. Yes I’m a blues singer. It’s so strange how the 4s and 7s show up here and have always been my numbers.
