  • Nestled along the pristine shores of the Yucatán Peninsula, Playa del Carmen in Mexico stands as a captivating testament to the evolution of a once quaint fishing village into a vibrant and sought-after tourist destination. Its history as a tranquil retreat dates back to ancient Mayan times, where the city was known as "Xaman-Ha," a place of pilgrimage and connection to nature. However, it wasn't until the latter half of the 20th century that Playa del Carmen began its transformation into a hub of tourism. As Cancún's popularity grew, Playa del Carmen emerged as a quieter alternative, drawing travelers with its charming blend of stunning Caribbean beaches, rich Mayan heritage, and a burgeoning nightlife. The cobblestone streets, lined with a mix of traditional Mexican architecture and modern amenities, speak to the town's diverse history.

5th ave was all dirt a few years ago,it was recently done over with the bricks and what a mess it was for about 2 years, because they also had a few hurricanes when the work was being done..The ADO buses from the airport to Cancun and PDC leaves every 20 minutes, they now have a small grocery outside where you can buy snacks and drinks..instead of paying crazy prices at the 2 bars outside the airport..

Thinking of going here soon for 2 months! Work online in high ticket sales, south America key for me. Need good internet, infrastructure, beaches.....would you say playa or would you recommend somewhere else?

Plenty of AirBnb have fiber optic service. Infrastructure, services, etc. are all intact. The only place where I'd say Playa falls a little short are its beaches. In of themselves, they're fine, but if you compare them to Cancun or Tulum (45 mins - 1 hour) in each direction, you'll find that the beaches in those areas are nice in that they're much deeper. Playa has suffered from a lot of beach erosion. All-in-all, Playa is a great destination for remote workers.

Mexico has a Coca-Cola addiction. There are diabetes epidemics in parts of the country due to the love for sugary drinks.

Ok how about I comment on sugary drinks & diabetes? As a commenter below says "Mexico has a Coca-Cola addiction. There are diabetes epidemics in parts of the country due to the love for sugary drinks." Hi-calorie soft drinks are garbage. If that stops you from watching so be it.
