In this video I go over 4 reasons why I believe silver dimes are an essential part of anyone's silver stack.
Known by some as junk silver dimes, and by others as constitutional silver dimes, these are really beautiful coins. One of the best things about silver dimes is the limited supply, as they have not been minted since 1964.
Some other characteristics that make them essential to your stack are their divisiblity, recognizability, and their legal tender status.
Do you love stacking silver dimes? Let me know in the comments below!

I have a ton of silver dimes. Over half are Mercury dimes, one of my favorite silver coins.
Have to agree the Mercury dimes are my choice too. Thanks for all the info. 👍
I work in retail part time. Silver dimes trickle through the registers on a regular basis. Quarters rarely come through and halves never do.
I spend $75-$100 every two weeks for Constitutional silver at my LCS, with Mercury dimes and Franklin halves occupying my top two selections. Currently, the Mercs are running me $2 per and the Franklins are $10 at my LCS in the Midwest.
thats about a 15% premium, not good imo
Well-that’s what it costs at my LCS and fortunately, my education and current profession afford me a comfortable income and lifestyle. It could be that you have a higher cost of living than I do based on geography or that your mortgage or car payment or monthly bills are higher than mine.
In any event, I know you mean well, but I always wonder what prompts people on anonymous comment boards to critique other people’s spending habits.
I don’t want to do a back and forth, so I’ll just leave it at that.
I’m paying more than that, but I’m still buying.
You can easily resell Franklin's for $14 each & 2.50 per mercury dimes. Antique shops sell for 3.50 each before premiums gone up on junk. That's good at now days prices. I always try to get mercs at 115 a roll or under and under 2.50 each!
@@origamioutlaww5056 You just threw a hissy fit cause someone pointed out you over payed.....You seem like you don't like to learn.
I lined up with a small bit of silver during the Hunt’s attempt at cornering the market. It reminds me of the GameStop stock hype. My brother made $80,000 as he bought about a week before it skyrocketed. He only chose it because his teen loved the store. He’d have made more except they got locked out by the manipulators.
Just started stacking a few years ago and my first purchase was from SD bullion, ordered a $100 face bag and lucked out with a full bag of dimes.
I know people like Mercury dimes because the design is nice but really Roosevelts generally weigh more because they are not as worn. May not make a difference now, when silver price is cheap. But might make a difference if silver price ever gies up.
But I feel that the collectible value of the mercury dimes will be reflected in the premium for them and that will more than make up for lost weight.
@@mysterybuyer3738
It's true that some dealers charge more for Merc's, but the reality is that any Merc you get as junk silver is going to be well worn unless it is from the 30's and 40's, and likely there won't be any better dates included, so in my opinion, Roosevelt's are the best dimes to buy because they generally have more of their silver still intact. But if someone wants to stack Merc's, I would hand pick the very best ones which will likely be the later ones, and not buy the slick earlier ones.
Thank you. Very helpful and great presentation.
Exactly! I`ve been stocking up on Roosevelts but also keep some mercurys around because they`re just cool looking and if the shtf people will know immediately that mercs are 90% just from their looks and not have to look at years or edges.
@Mystery Buyer yes ,the mercs will end up like the barbers for colectors one of these days
Silver dimes are the ultimate apocalypse money and if things do not go so bad they are still silver, and US legal tender, and rarish.
That was short and sweet! 3 seconds in and I have your answer: YES! LMAO
Dimes are the best fractional Silver you can get. On average 2.2 gr of Silver...greatest barter currency ever!! Remember that Constitutional Silver is still being melted by the ton. Many dealers get top price for 'Junk" silver. So they bag it, weigh it and sell it one shot paid on the spot!!! Who's going to tell us when the numbers are low? Is there a repository where we keep track of how many dimes, quarters, and half dollars are left? No. So we'll wake up one day and there just won't be any available. Morgans are already fetching top dollars for run of the mill grades. Sooooo........LOL Great video my good man!!!! Cheers
Thanks SSS, you present a good case for stacking dimes!
The Mercury dimes are my favorite and here in Ohio you can find them sold between 19x and 21x
I'm not in Ohio, but I recently paid 20x for decent Merc's from the 30's and 40's.
Thanks for the info, I really like hearing about the LCS situation around the country!
@@SmartSilverStacker $2 per Merc at my LCS outside of Chicago.
I'm in California (bay area) and both of my dealers forgo the tax for me and give me my "junk" at 20x fave out the door. I walk in with $20.00 and walk put with 10 handpicked (my hand) 90%silver dimes! It pays to be friends with your lcs!

The best! You said it all, thanks!

Great points on silver dimes! I dont have that many and I think i will get a bunch more.
Thx sss for the content
Wonderful pile of dimes.
Got $5,000 face of quarters/dimes. Paid 3.5-4x for them in 2006. Core of my stack.
Amazing! That was a great time to start stacking =)
@@SmartSilverStacker It's STILL a great time to be stacking. No doubt in my mind in 15 years, silver will be up another 5x, at a very minimum....with the potential to be a lot more.
Awesome!!!
Let me get a couple off you big bro lol
Lately the premiums on “Constitutional Silver” has been quite high as you mentioned in the video, but that only goes to say that the demand for “Constitutional Silver” coupled with the shortage in “Constitutional Silver” plays into the fact that a lot people are waking up and preparing themselves for an “Economic Day Of Reckoning” that will appear somewhere in the horizons. I hope our the U.S. government comes to its senses and prevents it, but I don’t rely on such foolish hope. I rather have physical “Silver” whether it is “Constitutional” or not than not have it and be up S--t’s Creek without a paddle and be at the whims and ferocity of a coming storm unprepared like most Americans and other people globally are. We “Silver Stackers” are small group in numbers and percentages, that much I do know.
@ReeX4U With the current “administration” don’t count on ANYTHING. The damage done to our country just in the past 12 months is a mere blip on their radar as to their true intentions. United States of Venezuela is where we’re headed.
Nearly all of my 50 lbs. silver stack is the plain old US coins. I do have some collectables. Easy to buy and sell and use in a SHTF situation. As a investment my PM is a poor investment, but they do give me some comfort knowing I have them..
Great video
Thanks!
This video is just stating the obvious. Had a family friend steal my Mercury Dime collections in my teens when we still carried coin change in our pockets. I have never been able to able find that many since, it was only about $300 face value but that was a lot of saving for a kid to save in the '60s
Sorry to hear that. I stripped probably hundreds of CPU computer units for their green boards only to have them stolen. Never was able to get my hands on that quantity of CPU towers again.
300x20 that's 6000$ worth of 🥈!
@@foxmulder7616 Dimes are 10 cents, not 20 cents and there are 10 of them per dollar, smaller and thinner than a penny. I know 3,000 sounds like a lot but they fit into a large cigar box.
@@DanOKC $20 my friend is about what silber is per oz. So evey $1.40 of coins face value multiply that by $20 that's how much that's worth. About $1.25 a dime in silver.

I just looked online and it was 240 bucks for 50 mercury dimes and i just got 100 of them for 195! Got them for less than half of what they are at the big bullion stores! Local shops are definitely the way to go! I got abbunch of quarters in good shape for about 5 bucks a peice.
Your recommendation to stack junk a year ago held up well for those who heeded it. I have a question for anyone here. If you had a chance to buy clean silver at spot, would you? I mean if it was unsuitable to sell at a coin shop because they wouldn't get any takers at retail. Because my LCS just took in some odd 20 g silver rounds with a past president on it and I asked him what he was going to do with it and he said they would go straight into scrap. Now I understand these get sent to a salvage buyer for some fraction below spot and eventually end up in the hands of a refiner. But if there is a good possibility of silver increasing significantly in value over the next 3 years it seems that holding this would still make some sense.
I love mercury dimes!
This video is spot on (pun intended). But seriously, it's even crazier today than it was a year ago. Will things ever go back to the good old days when we could get junk silver for a little over spot? Probably not...
Junk is nice! I wouldn't say I stack it I do collect it though. I have bought it for stacking a few times when I just got a great deal.
I like the quarters... Personal preference I guess...

Mercury Dimes all the way. Simply don't care for FDR but you nailed all the reasons. I can't think of anything you missed. The fasces may've actually been ancient Greco-Roman weaponry
I bought a ton of these in 2019. Remember $14 silver? Ugh
Constitutional silver is going to eventually have a HUGE premium. Im in my low 30s so ill live to see the inevitable silver shortage. Its coming eventually folks! But regardless of that, this stuff is a smart asset to own
@ 6:01 There's that pesky 80% Canadian dime you accidentally mixed in a while back. LOL
I found one of those old Canadian dimes in change the other day. Love free silver
I metal detect and find all my silver halves quarters and dimes I have plenty of all and capped bust I’ve found back to 1821
That's awesome, where do you have the most success finding coins?
I am with you 100% as far as dime supremacy is conscerned, but I will add that it's also a good idea to have at least maybe half a roll each of silver war nickels and wheat cents, also for making change in SHTF scenarios. Cheers, and Keep Up the Good Word!
I've got a bunch of pre '82 copper pennies rolled up in bank boxes 👍 Nice to be able to get copper bullion way below spot
Hahaha.... I have well over a thousand war nickels and over a hundred pounds of copper cents as well as a bunch of silver dimes, quarters and halves. I'm SO ready for barter time. ;)
Never thought of the fact that copper cents are basically fractional copper rounds and will most likely be used in a shtf situation as well. Thanks for that I have been saving copper cents for a while but just based on the fact that copper cents are worth more than double their face value!
The legality has unfortunately not stopped people from counterfeiting ASE, which are also legal tender with a fv of $1
I picked up 100 mercury dimes this morning for face X 19.50. I think that works out to about 27 per ounce but im ik with that since theyre limited amounts and not atruck since 64
They do charge sales tax on junk silver if you live in Kentucky for sure even if you buy them on line and out of state.
A Dime is a days wage .
Don’t have an LCS, cheapest I can reliable find online for dimes is 23x even when buying $100FV. I’m not a collector so I’ll stick to rounds.
Try Money Metals Exchange
Go on vacation to states that have No tax .
I started buying rolls of mercs
If I sell my mercury and Roosevelt dimes what should I expect to get for them. Thanks jim80
Premium doesn’t matter its money out of my pocket . Who cares who gets it. It’s the price either way . Over time Dollar cost ave . And I think silver dimes are worth a days wage . 100-200$ a dime . So if I can pick it up for less then an hr worth of work I am HAPPPY BEYOND ........ put it into perspective ... I will pay it all day long .
Mercury Dimes and Walking Liberty Halves make up close to 75% of my stash

They charge sales tax on junk silver in Massachusetts...
that's unfortunate. How far is Tim from you lol
@SmartSilverStacker I've been there, it's hour and a half away. Didn't see Yankee....
What did it when when the smelters "withdrew" backlog coins after the price drop? Where those.not.melted?
I dont know about anywhere else but up in Northeastern Pennsylvania I can't find any Junk silver for under 20× face value. I've searched upwards of 20 miles in every directions of Scranton Pa. Is that normally?
The best I've found in the past 4 months is 19.5x FV. That was online, not local. My local seller runs right at 20x consistently at the moment.
im a collector and i dont think these coins are junk all coins have a historical value thats why you should collect
Well I don't give investment advice, but I'm certainly stacking at these prices!
What price is a good price to buy 90% Mercury silver dimes when the spot price is $23.41?
Also, what company do you recommend to buy them from?
Thank you.
This is what I do to calculate if 90% is better than 1 oz silver rounds. For 90%, take 23.41/10=2.34. Keep in mind that around 14 dimes is roughly about an oz of silver. So take 2.34x14=32.40 for an oz of silver if you buy dimes. Compare $32.40 vs $27.50 (approximate price for a generic 1 oz silver round) and you can see that it would be better to buy a 1oz silver round over 1 oz of silver dimes. I suggest buying $1 face value of dimes below $21.07 (23.41x.90), that would be a good deal. However, from what I have seen recently at Local Coin Stores, 90% is quite expensive. Online is too expensive for dimes as well. I suggest buying 1 oz silver rounds for now.
@@roysakic5475 I appreciate for all the information.

YAY dimes! 🥈🥈🥈🥈🥈🥈🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍
for really worn coins, how much less silver is there in the coin ?
So what do you consider a reasonable price for dimes and quarters?
It all depends on spot price. Currently, I wouldn't pay any more than 19x for any 90% silver coins. So $1.90 per dime and $4.75 per quarter. That is for stacking purposes.
If collecting for a numismatic value, that is a whole other beast to get into.
@@silverscrounger I can't find your prices you suggested anywhere. Great vid brother.
@@brotherbread6549 yeah, I think the prices I have been getting are very localized in my area of Texas.
@@brotherbread6549 Yup, we're being scalped on constitutional premiums...BUT, constitutional is more for liquid insurance than less easily convertible rounds and bars. For example, silver shot is about worthless in SHTF situations unless you're dealing with someone knowledgeable
I just can't let go of my mercs, silver roosevelts, or barbs. I just buy, hoard, & HodL!
You can take 4 quarters and four dimes to make 1 ounce of pure silver, or 2 1/2 Dollars and four dimes to make an ounce!😉
Jefferson developed our decimal currency system, but who determined the proportion silver content? Any combo 1.40 face value = 1oz. Silver.
Thanks ! ...nice to know
I recall the days when 90% was a buck over spot and indeed, most bars were in the area of $1-$2 over spot. With junk silver now trading at a solid $4 > 7 > $9 over spot, it doesn't make much sense (to me) to be buying junk. I'm lucky I have my base supply of junk coins and I am not really buying silver today. If I were, I would be buying .999 generic over junk if the premiums are the same. I think dealers are simply riding the perceived demand and the firming up of "price dips". I think dealers are not in any big hurry to unload what they buy these days, very near spot, and they are OK just waiting around for $5 over spot instead of being in a hurry to sell at $1 over spot. Too bad, premiums were a buck over spot for 15 years or so.
hi i have like 1964 silver quarters where should i sell tell to a coin dealer pawn shop or ebay? And how much are they worth
Check out the website coinflation.com. It will tell you the current melt value of your quarters.
I would steer clear of pawn shops, you should call and ask at your local coin shop what they are paying. Also check the current buyback prices at JM Bullion and other online dealers.
You can check the JM Bullion prices here : www.jmbullion.com/my-account/buyback-products/
Hope that helps!
I personally don't care of the shortage or the limited supply of 90% silver because they charge a heavy premium even when prices of silver is going down. To me thats not good business. In addition I prefer to buy .999 silver bar than silver because of the bullion versus collecting
The limited supply is the reason those premiums are increasing. And even though premiums have risen, I believe they will rise further going forward.
@@SmartSilverStacker if the concern is that S will HTF soon, then yeah get all the fractional silver you can get....but i like getting a good bang for my buck, and 15 to 25% premiums make me reluctant to purchase more junk silver. 1oz rounds/bars/bullion are imo the best for long term. Sure, get fractional when you can, but dont break the bank
findbullionprices has been a godsend for me in terms of online silver stacking. I've gotten premiums for 40% HD's around 2% with free shipping as well. it works equally as well for gold and platinum/palladium
What is your take on cleaning 90% with baking soda and water in foil?
not necessary and you might lose a little silver weight, but the coins will certainly look nicer. might do it for a few pieces for fun but not to the entire stack. thanks for watching!
What is an acceptable premium on silver dimes?
I think in 2023 20 times face value is a good deal. 19 or less is by far better but I've seen it go as high as 25 times face
What is awesome about coins? Are they iconic too?
In Vermont, everything is taxed. Hate it here.
Why is it that fractional silver, dimes and quarters have smaller premiums but, fractional gold has greater premiums??

Isn't it illegal to deface currency? I don't know why they'd go through the trouble to melt them, I don't mind having alloy with my silver, it keeps them from wearing down and losing mass.
It's not illegal to deface money. Only to deface it to make a profit. Which is odd since there's those coin smashing machines everywhere

Why are dimes preferred over quarters, halves and nickles?
I prefer quarters and halves.
When SHTF, shelling out abunch of dimes every purchase is gonna wipe your supply out quick. 😅
I like dimes because they're the most divisible of the bunch
I love 💕 constitutional silver coins. History baby!
It was only $50 a ounce for a couple of days in 1980. Even $35 was only a couple of weeks at the most. Not much time for too many to actually be melted. A lot sold for melt but that doesn’t mean much of it was melted. They are hoarding large amounts of 90%. It will one day be back on the market if for no other reason the hoarders will die one day.

I disagree with alot of this video and there were some good points brought up, but over all disagree with alot of this video. That all said, i get really tired of hearing junk silver is widely reconized as silver. You see silver, most stackers see silver. I dare you to walk into the closest gas station or grocery store , take 2 coins up to the counter and see if the average cashier reconizes the silver vs the clad. And you could load the deck bring in a super worn corn and and a brand new shiny one and they might get it. Better yet just walk up to the counter with a sjlver dime and ask if they see anything different about that coin
You get my point. Also once you get into say kennedy halfs and i realize that is beyond the scope of this video. But kennedy half dollars would be really confusing to transact with
I hear and respect what you're saying, but consider that if things get SHTF bad, people will necessarily figure things out QUICK. And as soon as possible, they'll try to hold onto their familiar silver currency-coins and start bartering with lesser-valued items--to preserve as much of that undisputed measure of wealth/value as possible
Just in case things get even worse. Does that make sense? Cashiers will GLADLY accept those coins--at face value and substitute them for theor worthless clad coins or bills
Mom and pop C-store owners will be among the first to accept silver, knowing they can convert to other needed goods and services
@@LittleLouieLagazzathat's how I got my first buffalo nickle poor sap just handed it to me lol
I extremely disagree with the barter argument. People won't trade a metal coin for food, booze, or guns. Maybe once all the dust settles after many years and some form of governing comes back
Isn't it illegal to melt US coins?
I thought it was illegal to melt a government coin.
Why would you melt it
