  • How do I protect my skin from the hottest day of the year when I'm allergic to suncream?
How do I mend my hat?
Why do I love a trip to a big flower filled garden where there's room for swathes of colour?
What plants do I spot here at RHS Wisley, the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship permanent garden and research base, just outside London?
And how are the dahlias in the trial getting on - it was a tough winter, a tough spring... will there be any dahlias for the trials committee to look at?
All in all a lovely day at RHS Wisley - a quick waltz around the gardens while it's cool and then a meet up with the Dahlia Trials Committee to see how the dahlias are doing this year.
    Enjoy! x

Thank you SO much for “walking “ me round Wisley. Taking your time and explaining everything was a sheer delight.
Your video of the Chelsea Flower show was by far the best.
Another big thank you and I look forward to more garden adventures. Veronica Rickards.

Ha! Loved your film commentary at the fountain… “in comes elegant Grace Kelly and some man in a beautifully cut suit. And they’d have a tryst , or discuss where the bad guy was!” …I’m all here for it! Good film location!

Dahlia "Great Silence" would get my vote:). I have given up on sweet peas myself, there are plenty of other flowers in the world to grow. Loved the wildflower meadow, the colours were sublime. I too wear a straw gardening hat-perfect lightweight, keeps one shaded/cool. I don't wear sunscreen, not allergic, just can't stand it on my skin. But I am always covered up as you were, so I never burn anywhere. Plus sunshine is good for you!

I must’ve visited Wisley about 20 years ago and I remember that pond near the Tudor house so well. It was so lovely to see it again. The Bog Sage that I bought at the plant sale is doing very well and so are the two artichokes. Thank you for taking us around this wonderful place. It was an absolute delight to watch. ❤

I totally agree about the herbaceous border . As a young Kiwi I cut my gardening teeth on the lengthy nightmares in my main town gardens . My workmates and I would grumble away as we worked but we had to admit they were a very good plant classroom .At 71 I still remember the things I learned then .

Thank you for sharing Georgie. I've not been to Wisley in some 8 years and it has changed sooo much and I didn't recognise nearly all of it apart from the house and ling pond and the block paved path with Heleniums. Just incredible! I clearly need to go back as it looks like I barely scratched the surface with the amount I saw. Great commentary...like I was almost there ❤

Thanks for the tour, very enjoyable. The bog salvia is beautiful. They have a huge border of it in front of our local arts centre but too large for my small garden. We visited when the wisteria were in full bloom, gorgeous. I have loved our very damp, cool summer, and was hoping it would stay that way. I have been looking for a small parasol for my next visit, as I find even a lightweight hat too hot. I hope your day went well.

I have found that paying particular attention to the fiber of the "cover up" clothing makes a huge difference, too! 100% pure linen or cotton breathes so much better than anything with a synthetic fiber in the blend.

  • @maureenmckenna5220
    @maureenmckenna5220 Месяц назад +6

Yes, indeed, it’s all what you get used to. If you cannot wear sunscreen, then covering up is your only choice. I am not allergic to sunscreen, but find it expensive, the good stuff, and a pain in the neck to put on. So I wear sneakers and socks, arm coverups that go over the back of the hand, and a big hat. The only thing I need to cover is my face, which I don’t mind doing. Easy, quick and not too much product. Always be careful with the sun.

totally agree - good to cover up - though usually I'm done and under cover by about 10.30 and then don't go out again till after 4 so at the flower farm I don't worry too much - just when I know I'm going to be out in the sun at midday x

Well done for your sun protection. A long-sleeved kaftan type garment might be cooler than jeans, but possibly not so practical for gardening. Squirty bottles are invaluable to prevent overheating, or indeed, water dribbling down from your hat!

You are just a delight. I’m an Aussie with a garden in Aus and NZ. I loath the heat and dress, just as you. When I don’t feel motivated to go gardening, I watch you and out I go remotivated. You are the only gardener who has spoken about weeding and work of herbaceous hedges. I thought I was doing something wrong getting weeds. Thank you for all. A wet scarf around your neck might help too.🙏💐

Thank you, the hydrangeas are wonderful. A white one will find its way into my shopping cart soon . Why was there a wonderful colourful Shawn the sheep near the research building? He was lovely, I love sheep. I’m growing dahlias for the first time in pots and they are doing fine. I hope you enjoyed your day
