Brilliant video. Thanks Georgie, so much better than Gardeners World. I now feel liberated to be able to take cuttings without having to spend a fortune on twiddly bits.❤
Thank you for this. I’ve been taking cuttings for 30+ years, but I learned something. Although I’ve had some luck, I think in the past, I’ve left too much greenery on. Also, not about cuttings, but about the “Chelsea chop”. I had some phlox which the deer ate the tops off because I forgot to protect it with deer spray. Well recently I noticed, lo and behold, it put on more blooms than it would have and now it looks lovely. I thought of you and I guess the deer knew about the “Chelsea chop”. 😊. Gave me a laugh.
Great video. In order to get three new limelight hydrangeas, I pinned three low hanging branches of my mature shrub into pots of soil early in the spring. By fall they each had enough roots to cut the branch free of the mother plant. I put them in the ground, mulched them well over the winter and they are now two feet tall with flowers. In a few years they should be 8 to 10 feet tall. Without a greenhouse and extremely expensive electricity, it's the only economical way I could find to make new plants.
Thank You for sharing the amazing technique. First time I hear about heal cuttings, and thats what I’ll do this afternoon. Happy gardening from South Africa 🌱
Plant propagation was what fascinated me about gardening when I first started gardening some 30 years ago. Brilliant stuff. I need to take some penstemon from my garden. Do you not use rooting powder? Oh and if you take a pop bottle and either use a fine drill bit or hot needle you can make some holes in the lid, makes for a fine watering system.
I am loving this so far,you have such a brilliant personality for doing this,so down to earth, you made me laugh,I can see a bit of my self in you.. I am going to share this with my best friend, thankyou so so much,xx
Very nice explanation. I especially appreciate that you explain how to overwinter them, as I haven't yet found a video that includes this critical information! I've had great success with cuttings this summer but am now trying to figure out how to shelter my small plants until spring.
Love this! Love your personality and clear, straightforward explanations. Unfortunately, many of the plants you mentioned were toxic to pets and I TRY to keep those out of my collection. What toxic ones I do have are only in my front yard. I KNOW dogs shouldn't eat plants, and perhaps mine wouldn't, but I have a Jack Russell puppy that eats every stick, stem, or piece of wood he can get his paws on. And NO, he won't figure out "Drop it!" yet....sigh. I am a Salvia LOVER though and have several different variaties in my own yard in Florida. I now plan to try the one you had. What beautiful flowers! In fact, I DID just take some cuttings of some of mine as well as some Gomphrena recently and lost them all because I THOUGHT I had put them in a shady spot. Alas, too much sun actually hit it. Soooo, this video inspired me to go take more!! Thank you again. God Bless you for your time and talents you are sharing with us.
This properly inspired me! I went out this morning, still dressing gown clad, to take some cuttings of nepeta and my penstemon garnet. Thanks again for the video.
Fabulous video. Thank you Georgie. I love propagating plants- especially my roses. I find I get lovely strong plants from cuttings. I want to take cuttings from my salvias, but have been frightened to do so- worried about damaging my precious babies. I am going to be brave following your great instruction. Thank you. I have collected 100 dahlias over the past few years. I get really annoyed when I order a plant I really want, wait 4 months for it to grow and start flowering, only to find I've been sent the wrong variety- so frustrating. This has happened most years over the past 5 years, from different retailers. Happy gardening 🙂
I have a lovely white clematis called Huldine. Viticella type so easy to grow. I tried cuttings previously with no luck, so will have another try. Best demo ever of taking cuttings, thank you
Brilliant video. Love taking cuttings . I lost quite a few plants over the winter, so I'm having to restock with new and cuttings from my sister's garden. Also, sowing more seeds to over winter this year.
I have grown Salvias for the first time this year and had put on my list of things to do, take Salvia cuttings! Didn't get to it today but now I've seen this video I feel much more confident about the process, thank you. Liz

You inspired me to go out and take some cuttings…(I live in zone 2b-3 in Sk, Canada…winters are very cold) I potted them up into small containers and will put them on my kitchen counter away from the windows. Hoping I have some success, and thinking I will place them under a grow light once I see roots developing…late Fall? Will make that decision when the time comes. It’s fun to experiment. Thank you for all your videos!
Thank you. I watched avidly…..learning what I had done wrong with my first attempt at taking cuttings! Two questions….. 1. Can I remedy the penstemon cuttings that I didn’t leave the heel on…..I cut the wrong end to make the cutting shorter? 😂 2. How do you know whether to put them in water or soil? I tried the penstemons in water first and nothing happened……maybe as I had cut the heel off? The cuttings are amazingly still alive (I subsequently popped them in compost in a pot)…I need to go and cut the leaves and snip out the middle though. I very much appreciate you posting this, thanks.
The penstemons may recover if you pinch out tops and don’t leave too much leaf xxx I put most direct into good compost - though people often find rooting in water works x good luck x

And yes, will also look into having a carboot sale. Love my pyjama gardening too. 😅 Sending warm wishes from Perth Western Australia
I prefer taking cuttings in the morning, if possible, just after sunrise. Semi-hard wooded plants take more time to soak for me, then pot them up. I wanted some jasmine cuttings but the plant was destroyed over winter, so I can't.
This was brilliant - thank you! I am off to search my garden for potential. Please will you do a follow up video at the end of winter when you pot them on?
I have been inspired to take some cuttings. I have also been inspired to have a GREENHOUSE. I'm not sure how my husband feels about your influence Georgie! (tee hee).
Brilliant Georgie, I've never been successful with Clematis cuttings but will definitely have another try. They always seem to rot off, so from what you said I'm giving them too much water. You've given me confidence. Do you ever take rose cuttings? xx
I absolutely adore rosemary,I managed to root it without cutting off the top..but because I haven't took off the top it won't spread out will it??.. I have got a soft eucalyptus cutting,do you think that will root??..I have also got a beautiful eucalyptus tree & would love to grow one either from seed or cutting..I am in England.. I cannot thankyou enough for this video along with your beautiful personality..I can't wait till next year now.. Again thankyou 🌱🍄🌱🍄

Great ideas there, I need to do my penstemon as it's got quite woody. I'm a bit worried about your clematis cuttings, you normally take a leaf node cutting, it looks as if you just used a leaf in which case there is no bud to grow on. The same with the Akebia. I hope I'm wrong and you get some great plants for next year's sale.
Another brilliant video Georgie. Other RUclips videos say that because Salvias are hollow stemmed you can only take tip cuttings. You seem to take them as normal cuttings. I am not having much luck with tip cuttings. Any advice

I do have small greenhouse but I am zone 6a and it gets quite cold here. I do overwinter some plants in my basement. Would this be adequate light with grow lights?
you need some kind of growing medium - do you have any garden compost you could mix with the diggings of a mole hill for example to make something to dib them into? So long as they don't get too warm the basement/grow-light system sounds good to try x
Very interesting. I love taking cuttings but recently found peat free compost doesnt always give good results. Is the sylvagrow your 'go to' medium or do you use a more cheap type at times.
