Everyone was fine with Injustice 2 and MK11 because despite gameplay problems, they were completed feature and offline wise. Not so much can be said about MK1, though
Because when it comes to the US, MK has always been the fighting game with the largest sales numbers. Even people who don’t play fighting games would buy MK. But now that SFV has been on ESPN and Tekken 7 sold nearly 10 million copies, the casuals are starting to realize that MK is still that sloopy, goofy game from the 90s whose only claim to fame is bloody fatalities and a generally ‘mature’ tone (that looks like it comes from the mind of a teenager).
imho mk has the problem that its just a completly different game every time - characters don't are consistent in the slightest except maybe some very iconic special moves... the system is totally different every time. And the overtuned violence also hurts it - much less youtube content, because you have much more work - potentially cutting every match to remove fatalities etc.

Thank you Tom! My mom was a day one Blockbuster Video subscriber… they did not respect her in the least. When Netflix DVD service came out, I told her I was switching, and she followed suit. I told people they need to get it together in the 90s and people were like “they’re Blockbuster 😂… deal with it, they’re not going anywhere”. Absolutely great analogy MK1 does seem like an mobile game NRS needs to bring 3D back to Mortal Kombat immediately the fun factor is gone, this 2d style that they are doing is so played out and they don't cater to their fans anymore.

I'm as casual as they come and I only play fighting games in single player. Tekken 8 is absolutely a better single player game than MK1. Mortal Kombat X was the last great single player MK game.
After the MK11 debacle, in order to restore faith in the franchise, MK12 had to be some kind of love-child of MK9 and MKX. Instead, we didn't get that, nor even MK12 -- we got some afterbirth of the franchise, whelped onto a public toilet floor and ironically christened, "Mortal Kombat 1".
- Injustice hurt MK definitely, it began to bleed over. I don’t think their studio is big enough to manage to major games at once and support them. - MK11 and now MK1, I’m extremely skeptical to buy anything from them. That’s 2 meh games in a row now. - MK11 was absolutely elementary of a fighting game. ABC, 123 combos. Free meter… Free come on man 😂 If MK11 is your favorite MK, I understand why. - MK1 is just MK11 all over again. The only difference is that when MK11 released in 2019 there was no other fighting game that was new. Both SF5 & Tekken 7 were already out for some years.
SF6 will die the second a deeper fighter is released (Tekken 8 doesn't count, given it has a fan base removed from SF). The game is shallow as heck, and unless Capcom drastically overhaul the gameplay with seaons-2 content, the game will see an exodus. Even now, many are complaining about finding players in Ranked play.
@@shoahkhan5670 to say this about sf6 when sf5 existed as it has for nearly a decade, did all of these things worse in every way and was still fine is very out of touch
@@chunli1771 SF6's relative success was _faute de mieux_ (for lack of better); and now that Tekken is around -- with another Fatal Fury around the corner -- the game will have to do something drastically different than it did in its first year, for it to remain near the top. Now, I don't doubt Capcom can do it, as they are unafraid of adding mechanics, character moves, and making big gameplay overhauls (unlike NRS are)... It's just that the game in its current state gets stale after a couple of months of seeing the same half-dozen characters spamming very same-y gameplay metas, cringy throw loops, and predictable corner deaths. If it wasn't for online play, I'd not have even played the game; and said component of the game is now in its twilight. The belated "Special Ed" release, too, has fomented about as much 'excitement' as a grandpa Biden public address. So, unless the game gets some much wanted character additions (not brain fart newbies and tripe casuals vote in), and has its gameplay and extant roster fleshed out, I see SF6 being a distant memory by this time next year...
I find ranked games in sf6 very fast. Other masters. SF6 is still street fighter and the people that love how street fighter has alwats been conducted still like it. If people complain about throws bcuz the oppenent is always close and can shimmy you also then that's just one layer of one interaction. SFV was even MORE tick throw heavy. Throw teching is easy too. SF still has situational awareness and setplay that's why I love it.

It's not crazy at all how MK1 failed althought they started working on the next game early. Clearly MK1 was Injustice 3 before scrapping it and reskinning it into MK1. The kameo system is a clear indicator of that because it makes more sense in a superhero FG than MK. This is why the story is lacking in act 3, why the colors are so vibrant and characters being so much smaller on the screen. Lets not forget WB gives the ok or denial of NRS. Especially when James Gunn came and totally switch up the DC"Extended"U that was supposed to bridge into all medias from movies, shows, cartoons and games just like MK has recently. It seems now they are starting that from scratch with JG new DCU.
@@taylorcrisp7745 They should certainly put a couple of MK characters into Tekken... Cage and Sindel (MK11 design) come to mind. They did it with Capcom and SNK in T7, and it worked pretty well... Tekken 8 imo will be remembered as the modern blueprint for AAA fighting game. Lots of features, accessible for casual players with systems that allows them to improve and learn the game while still keeping the core elements of gameplay that veterans cherishes. Its also made to have a long lifespan, at least 7-8 years, with updates, DLC's and more features added along the way. Personnally i was never a fan of MK, i didnt like the very robotic and stiff feel of the animations. But what i learned throughout those podcasts just astounds me. Like its really incredible how much time NRS kept getting away with stuff without too much repercussions in sales, goes to show you the dedication of the hardcore MK fans.
I'm a casual and i haven't touched MK1 since Tekken 8 came out until a few nights ago. After waiting several minutes to get queued up with someone in kombat league i just closed the app. Didn't even play a set. There's no need for me to go back to it. I have a better product now.
I don't think you guys explained well the commercial history of Tekken. The series has been the best selling fighter for over a decade until the production values decreased with Tekken 6, which still sold a ton considering what an excuse of a game it was. Casuals care for graphics, single player content, side modes and metascore: Tekken underperformed since Tekken 6 in all those instances. T7 was considered for years in the hardcore scene as the best fighter, but if you look at the metascore and the userscore on that platform it looks like a tier B game, completely opposite to what a FGC enthusiast would tell you: the graphics is bad, its content barebones and the online play is absolute trash. Yet that game sold 11 million copies. T8 has top notch production values, tons of SP content and for the first time in 18 years acceptable online, hence its sales returned to where they would have always been if Namco didn't fuck up during PS3/360 era.
It baffles me that T8 allows people to quit and I don't know anything about video game development but I would guess that they have a backup plan on hold in order to deal with rage quit. There's no way after all these years of T7 and specially all the SF5 rage quit debacle that they didn't know it would become an issue. I think they wanted to see how T8 player base would act having no punishment and now that the results are in they are probably ready to deal with it.
Right like Johnny has so many tools and his frame data is so good he doesn’t even need to go that deep in his bag. Same with ashrah, her main form is already good then dark stance is broke as well. She’s literally 2 chars in one while ppl like Lao or reptile barely have anything to work with
@andiakpan8502 as Brady has said Lao is built off of his armored launcher...that's it, you'd think he'd be a crazy pressure character. Reptile is so damn slow when he's a fucking lizard and his acid spit move is literally useless...why would anyone ever use it. I'm a smoke main so I'm not even allowed to do strings. I'll die for using my two best strings...while Johnny's overhead..although it can also be upblocked...it LAUNCHES and has a 50/50 option and you have to be quick about upblocking it.
@@JustinKeithD yea it’s a bunch of bs. I’ve always been an advocate of making every character honest with a sprinkle of bs. But NRS always makes it so there is a clear difference between the good and bad characters. You literally can’t win certain matchups just because a character is simply better.
The list of problems I have w modern mk games is so numerous idk how they reasonably fix it. I knew tekken 8 would be great cuz it was just an improved t7 and t7 was sick. Wish NRS took that approach from mk9.
No you don't. MK9-MK1 would have died much sooner because it would have just been NBA 2K of fighting games. Tekken 8 is only doing well because they added a super in the last game and now the new heat system in T8 further dumbing down the game for casual use. Which allows new players to feel better picking up tekken. Only the competitive players on Tekken have been playing for so long that new players will rarely adapt and grown to the competitive scene. So the competitive scene won't change much. The biggest problem for MK is not staying true to the core fanbase and only looking towards casual appeal, although it already sold the best of FGs. So it wasn't needed to dumb down the games in MK11 and MK1.
@@youngdresbaby I'm not quite sure what you're saying "no you don't" about, I'm just speaking for myself. Since mk9 every new MK game has been doubling down in directions I personally don't like. Most people feel ambivelant about rage arts (I personally kinda dislike them), but I have to say, I think the concerns that the heat system would dumb down the gameplay have been pretty much quashed, if anything it added a considerable amount of complexity.
Wow, so this whole time, Shao design was based off of another character and someone who had know prier knowledge of him or his beginnings as a boss/ruling character, and I thought his dragon like design looks cool. SMFH NRS
Shao = a repurposed Steppenwolf from Injustice 3, and is a veritable Ayres clone. It's one of the most egregious changes they made, taking his hammer and taunts away; close behind the re-racialisation of Sindel and Raiden, and the awful Kameo system.
@@StevenPadilla He's pretty much saying what most knew before the game was even released (I heard it pointed out before launch). It's rather obvious, and just another example of the hair-brained development of NRS, and their pathological obsession with 'fixing' what was never broken. The cringy "re-racialisation", and lazy / comic book time manipulation garbage, can be blamed on WB; the way that the game and its characters play is wholly on NRS.
That’s another thing. The Leroy incident? Harada/Murray and the team take it on the chin, the public lambasts them and humiliated them for having 7+ Leroy’s at Evo. Their response, nerf the old man and still keep him viable but not a boss character anymore. Paid frame data was evil, public outcry and even other devs from other games posting their own frame data options on Twitter. Their response, have it full in the next game complete with move properties like screw/tornado or launch. Tekken 7 had horrendous netcode, the team hired arika to help improve it. It’s minimal but Tekken 8s netcode is passable and a damn sight more “ok” then vanilla Tekken 7.
I respect the decision to close podcast MK related, this should be a message that there's nothing worth talking about MK and let the NRS get their things together. Until they start respecting the community, we should stop acknowledging this game, any comment which is not criticising this product is potentially supporting another abomination of the game. What NRS did is not acceptable, I hope no other fighting game goes that path, if we let this pass by, the market and the numbers may force other studios to water down their game, disrespect the audience, just as MK did.
MK1 just spit on his own legacy, worse than any other MK did it before. No traps, no weapons, no crushing blows, no fighting styles, no variations, no scenario interactions, no stage transitions, no kript, no game modes, no konquest, no new characters, no tag mode, no dark tone fatalities, no good story, no attractive girls, no interesting character designs, no dark atmosphere, no epicness, no fun. It's like if they completely forget how to make a good Mortal Kombat and tried to make a new game with the MK name just to ensure sales.
Ive never been so obsessed with a fighting game until Tekken 8. Im already at 50 hours in practice mode just learning Kazuya he is so difficult to master that I am completely obsessed with it. I havent even gone online yet because I am not ready. Anyways your right MK power level is too low. They need to raise the power level by 1000%
I think NRS fundamentally misunderstands casual players. I am a casual, but i still want a challenge. I still want to improve my gameplay. I dont want to play a game that has been dumbed down. A casual will not move beyond being a casual if they get bored with the gameplay.
One of the most annoying things is the fact that characters have useless strings. Why put the string on the move list if it has no practical use????? Lao has a f333 string that all hit as highs WHEN AM I GOING TO USE THAT?!
I might consider buying the game if they make Homelander fun. So far there's nothing to convince me to buy this game, the kameo feature alone makes me not want to play it. I love watching your content, Tom! ❤
Mk1 is "barebones" even in a vacuum; but yes, T8 and SF6 are shining a light on how lacking MK1 is in every regard. To tell the truth; SF and Tekken have always been better gameplay wise, but MK had its own specialty when it came to netcode and single-player content (since rollback integration in MKX anyway). The difference now is that the other games have improved drastically in the areas MK used to do best; while MK somehow managed to make a game with worse netcode and single-player content than even (also terrible) MK11. I didn't think it could get worse than MK11; but NRS somehow managed to do it. Until they fix the basic foundation of the game; MK1 has no hope.
I mean missing game modes, no Krypt also lack of character customization compared to MK11 and not to mention how boring and repetitive invasion really is
I think people are resistant to adding power because of the way you phrase it, it sounds like your talking about a very fundemental concept in any character or hero based games called hero/character fantasy. The idea being if I'm playing King the fantasy is a grappler who forces the opponent into powerful throw mixups, or if I'm playing Nina the fantasy is a rushdown character who puts opponants in a blender and pressures relentlessly until they crack/you find an opening, it sounds like MK1 has weak or almost non existant character fantasies and what your asking for is to buff characters so they actually have unique and interesting play patterns
Why is everyone mum on the issues of accessibility in Tekken 8? Please make quick matches open-ended instead of first to 2. Even the group matches in the lobbies are first to 2. I understand you can turn on infinite rematches when creating a session but c’mon. Try to make those sessions work in real life. There’s 7 people in a session, you join someone’s session and they’re afk, you create your own and sit there for 5 minutes while nobody joins. Long sets shouldn’t be locked behind game modes. Even if you don’t want to change quick match, at LEAST allow us to approach other avatars in the Tekken lounge and directly challenge them to a set. First to 2 only is the short road to madness. Thanks for the podcast guys!
Played about 50-60 hours within the first 2 weeks MK1 was out, I've never gone back. Can't imagine going back to the game at this point when I've got SF6 and Tekken8 to play. A friend of mine lasted 1 day on the game. After 1 day he quit and never went back. The point about first impressions I think is true. I haven't talked to anyone who is keen on revisiting the game after the horrible initial impressions. I have friends who are die hard NRS fans and when I see them online on steam or discord, they're on Tekken or SF6. Maybe this will be the wake up call NRS needs.
The same thing that nrs does is watch activision does and why I don’t play it anymore. And people complain about the game being bad but still buy it anyways. That’s the problem
For years my friends who play other fighting games would always goof on me for playing MK. They would always say "play a real fighting game." I never really listened because I love mortal Kombat but I get it now.
I saw this downfall coming months before release. The biggest mistake NRS made was sandwiching MK1 between SF6 and T8. I knew MK1 was gonna finally get exposed how mediocre MK really is. This might take several MK games to recover from unless NRS pulls another amazing gimmick. I’m predicting Tekken will king for at least 1 or 2 more installment unless SF7 is absolutely fire. SF and Tekken will be battling number 1 spot.
Never forget how they deleted and scrubbed the tweet from the internet that said they would go back in and change the move slot costs for certain moves and never did in the entire games life cycle
Sad been waiting for my early access character in mk 1 and they keep delayed that don’t make it early access I been waiting for the update just like dying light 2 been waiting years for content 😂 I ain’t gonna sit around and wait for Mk 1 content
I mean….I’ve always said MK1 came off like a quick cash-in based on how soon it came out, the awful Twich version, & like MK11, is a case of “Style over Substance”
I wont lie, the only reason i got so much into tekken 8 is because of how bad mk1 was. I was even play sf6 until tekken dropped and i never touch sf in my life.
In T7 you do lose points when you rage quit or you lose connection. The other guy doesnt get points. And your "disconnect rate" goes up which people see. Im not sure if the rage quitter loses points in T8 but Im pretty sure they do. I reject anyone who has 4% or more in T7 and in T8 its all been 0% for me so far. Ive actually had more rage quitters on SF6 and MK1 more than T8 so far. And SF6 and MK1 do not have any solution for this either. At least T7 and T8 has the disconnect rate.
Talk about how MK treat the characters! Everyone dies, comes back, timeline is restarted. It's so hard to sympathize with any character because the chances they get killed like nothing and doesn't make into the next game is huge. That's the biggest turn off for me.
Twitch down to abysmal numbers. MK1 not cracking top 8 signups when first announced for Combo Breaker, and CB is in Chicago their home turf. You'd think they would want to come for a chance to meet the team or Ed. YT numbers down. Tournament participation barely cracks 250+ even for a major like East Coast Throwdown and the online only ones for the so-called Pro Competition. The online ones should have like 300-500, you don't have to travel for it. You play at home.
MK1 feels like a canvas for Injustice 3. At this point I agree, do what you can to salvage what is there with MK1 but what NRS needs to ask itself is how do they want to be remembered in this new golden era of fighting games? I know Warner bros is partially to blame but Frankly I believe Ed Booms tweet about sales says it all. It just seems that the love and passion for the franchise and its community has been lost to…what can make a quick cash grab.
Heres the real issue.. mortal kombat 1 is TOO SLOW for the game its trying to be.. name me one assist game with the speed of mk1... i'll wait. EVERY assist game has an MvC level of speed except for MK1.. if MK1 had the speed of UMK3 or MK4 id have zero issues with the game. But the game itself is too slow for the type of game its trying to be.

Thank you Tom! My mom was a day one Blockbuster Video subscriber… they did not respect her in the least. When Netflix DVD service came out, I told her I was switching, and she followed suit.

Street Fighter 6 will never die since they will always have viewership in Japan.
Vtubers and those tournaments pull those numbers up.
They will most likely abandon this game after KP1 and start working on Injustice 3 or whatever. WB will realize that hardly any players are left to sell the 12$ skins to.

Tom Brady is the man
I don't think you guys explained well the commercial history of Tekken.
I think there should be at least one more quick Mk related podcast, basically to serve as a eulogy for MK1. RIP
So many characters in mk1 are undertuned while 3 or 4 are overtuned. I don't understand why they neutered so many characters.

SMFH NRS
where does he say this?
Shao = a repurposed Steppenwolf from Injustice 3, and is a veritable Ayres clone. It's one of the most egregious changes they made, taking his hammer and taunts away; close behind the re-racialisation of Sindel and Raiden, and the awful Kameo system.
@StevenPadilla it's time stamp 1:06:34

Straight facts keep it up guys this is the winning team
I preordered both. Played MK1 for about 1 week and went back to Tekken 7. Couldn’t get into it.
TheMainManSWE just put out a vid about the amount of plugging so I imagine action will be taken.

Mk1 has made me lose total faith in ever getting the mk game I dream of. Mkx will be the best they've ever done
Man kameos really killed the gameplay huh.

In T7 you do lose points when you rage quit or you lose connection. The other guy doesnt get points. And your "disconnect rate" goes up which people see. Im not sure if the rage quitter loses points in T8 but Im pretty sure they do.

Talk about how MK treat the characters! Everyone dies, comes back, timeline is restarted. It's so hard to sympathize with any character because the chances they get killed like nothing and doesn't make into the next game is huge. That's the biggest turn off for me.
