The contrast of the clear blue sky and the dark blue water with the full length view of the freshly painted Classic Cort at the 1:30 mark, would make for a perfect Picture Post Card. Awesome catch and info as always. Thank you. 👍
I was there, on the South Pier, the afternoon she sailed in. What a treat to see this rare visitor to Duluth, especially after she's freshly painted and shining like a million bucks.
@1Long2Short my wife and I came up for our anniversary and stayed at South Pier Inn. We literally pulled into the hotel 15 minutes before the Cort came in, so we stayed on the south side, haha
After her 5 year inspection a a bit of work, good to see ol' #1 out there! New paint, too - though her anchors appear to have already scuffed it a little :(
Yes, she has a shuttle boom system in the rear that can extend out either side. There is a big hatch on either side of the stern that swings open for unloading.
After her refit and new paint, the Stewart J Cort looks the way a "laker" should. Bridge up front and gracefully slipping through the Duluth Canal and under the Aerial Bridge as she enters the Duluth Superior harbor. Nothing "fancy nancy" about her. After all, she's a working ship!
Where do you film? Where is this located? Is there a website or online resource for someone who would want to visit and see the great ships come and go?
Wowie! I'm wondering how much paint it takes to make this huge ship look so good. I'm sure it's some sort of square footage thing but being terrible at math, I'm interested to know if you know? What a glorious day you had, and beautiful sparkling waters, sunshine so pure, I am so glad you had that day! Thank You!!
I barely made it to Duluth that day thanks to road construction. I only had a few minutes between parking the car and rolling the camera... so I'm really glad I made it. I don't know how many gallons it takes to paint a 1000-footer. I would like to know the answer myself!
1000’ x 50’ depth is 50,000 square feet per side. Double that for both sides. Bottom is 1000 x 105 = 105,000 square feet. So ballpark 205,000 surface area. A gallon of paint covers about 400-450 square feet. So we are looking at close to 500 gallons of paint! That doesn’t include the superstructure.

Thank you BL! Always appreciate your kind words. 🙂
Stubby 😄! Great views of #1!

I struggled deciding what pier would have the best light by the time she arrived. It was a 50/50 decision!

That’s my favorite Duluth hotel. Great for ship watching!
@1Long2Short we have been there every anniversary since 2022
She is a beauty.

Yeah, hard to keep the paint looking pristine for long!
"... and a bit of work"
Your video is so clear.
Thanks Sheila! 🙂
The Cort's lookin spiffy! great horn tune up too. Thanks for the video! Cheers.
Spiffy indeed. She actually blew her rarely-used second horn that’s mounted on her stern. I love this horn! 🙂
no boom, must have an unloading system similar to the Bloughs

That is one hell of a lot of paint. Magnificent vessels.
I can only imagine how long it takes to actually paint it.
Amazing ship! Beautiful in the sunshine! Really like the view as they make the turn after the aerial bridge.
Magnificent piece. The new paint job and the weather made your job a little easier. Loved it.

This was recorded at Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota. Approximate ship arrival and departure times are on the Harbor Lookout website.
I was not sure that stack was going to make it.
