Great video Stu 👍. I love calling coyotes! I shoot a 52gr match grade, very small hollow point Hornady. Drops them in their tracks. Totally agree with e- calls, I switched a few years ago
Thanks for showing your setup. I really liked the thermal hunts you have shown. I haven't been a fan of the 223, even though I was an expert rifleman while in the Marine Corps with the M16 A1 & A2. Never got to use good Hornady boat tails rounds out of them though or I may have loved them. The mass produced ball round full metal jacket ammo we used on the rifle range cost me points all the time! I use Hornady Super Performance rounds with my 270 and I know that quality of a round could have made all the difference in the world on the M16s I was shooting!
Great vids 👍👍. Glad I found your channel. I can’t imagine scanning with my thermal scope for 35 min on every single set. Once I went thermal scanner it was the biggest game changer iv ever experienced. Worth every single penny. Won’t leave the house without it.
A scanner is my favorite tool! I personally use a agm taipan tm15, it was cheap for what it is and has been a great unit!
This is my suggestion on coyote stuff to spend the most money on and don't skip on,, 1. Scope- really good thermal 2. Tri-pod. 3. Call with really good sounds. The rest u can go cheap on or use whatever u have. Bonus suggestions would be get a hand held thermal spotting scope of some type, can be a cheaper one but is a game changer
My story mimic's yours, except it happened to me a few years ago.
Had two bird dogs, guided on preserves and hunted all over the US, then they got old and passed and the four letter word work got in the way of raising and training pups, so I got back into night hunting with a new found passion.
One day I'll get another dog, but I spent to much money on gear to let it sit idle.
You need to get a thermal spotter though, it's a game changer and can be used for more than coyote hunting.

Could you do an in depth on day hunting? I tend to struggle with day hunting, but I'm fairly new. I use manual calls because we can't use electronic calls for fox and bobcat. Any tips for call volume and setups for big woods or thick cover. Not much for fields around here in North Georgia.

I for one would like to see your old coyote hunting setup too. Also, since you reload and save the coyote pelt, you might try some Barnes Varmint Grenade bullets. I believe they are designed for minimal damage to the pelt.

My grandpa made up an old ammo box with a battery and 100’ speaker wire and cheap speaker. Worked great

Just ran across your coyote video, setup for 2022. I was wondering being that you went all out on updating your equipment, how do you like it. You mentioned you are in Illinois, what part of Illinois are you in? YOu have some great ideas of the equipment you use, I will need to do some research. Hope this gets to you. Good luck this season. You would really like a handheld thermal monocular for scanning. But I know they are costly.
You'll have to get a thermal scanner. I use a Trail XQ38 as a scanner.

How do you deal with the backlight of your remote and the thermal? Don't you glow like an airport beacon when you're scanning round and round with the remote mounted right at your chest? I run the XP50 Trail it has the rubber eyepiece that contains all the light from the thermal, not the most comfortable after a few sets, but I don't look like the great pumpkin rising. Night hunting coyotes can be absolutely exhausting especially when you start retrieval in snow or cattails.
Will you have some thermal coon videos this year? I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes those videos you do!

I've been wanting to get into coyote hunting for a while but I'm 16 and don't have the money for a thermal and a red light doesn't really cut it so ig I'll have to wait till I'm older and have the money before I can really get into it

Have you ever tried a .22-250 Remington? My gunsmith swears by them, for 'yotes. Merely asking, not questioning you. My only question for you is when do you sleep?

I do a lot of cat hunting here in Arkansas I use about the same set up as you do only I shoot a center fire Remington 17 it doesn’t make a terrible hole in the fur
is there a budget thermal scope that works for coon and coyote night hunting? cant spend over 800
I use a Kinsei thermal monocular and a Wraith 4K Max NV scope with good success. I don't think you'll find a decent thermal scope for $800

223 or 5.56 V-Max soft point had been in the vitals for me about 200 yrds is the farthest shot as well some in alot closer and I love that 30 yards slam them. It.s the picture perfect moment when they see you and know the f--k up.

Way too much stuff!!!lol. I started out with a Johnny Morris Convertacaller along with a shotgun and lead BB shot. I have a few ARs in 243 but if I use my rifles I goto a bolt 223 or 243. Most guys with the ARs spray and pray hopping they connect. Drilled my first one of the season last Saturday while deer hunting. One less turkey chaser.

@@fridolfmane1063 I have about three times equipment from all the past decades that I've been coyote hunting... I just don't use hardly any of it anymore. I learned to pack light and leave all the extra gizmos back at home.
I went out the other afternoon. Was small game hunting and had a only a turkey diagram call with me. Got bored so I view on it making sounds of a squealing???? What ever noise it sounded like a red fox was interested and sneaking in within 15 yards and got spanked. Talk about packing light!!!! Just got lucky!

When is the best time to call coons? We hunt a lot of coyotes with thermal but I have never called coons. Thinking it would be enjoyable.

Energy isn't everything.
Total ballistics are key.
Ammunition manufactures have really stepped up their game in performance on all aspects.
As well as gun, distance etc.
No perfect gun or ammo for everyone.
But goals should be.
Clean ethical shot, being able to use the most out of that shot's results.
I can vaporize a woodchuck or racoon with a 300 win mag or 3 1/2 12 gauge.
But what do I get from it?
Unless it's a predator preying on my livelihood.
Take that sum bitch home make stew or a coat out of it.
Or better yet both.
Bigger isn't always better.
Not saying you're not 100% correct in your choice.
It's a more personal than people think, more options available for older calibers that can breathe new life into them.
But no one knows better than you.
Be comfortable and accurate in the distances you'll be shooting.
Then see if newer is better.

Stop shooting them threw the rib cage you don't need that bigger rifle. 17 hmr will drop every coyote in it's track out to 100 if you shoot the point of shoulder. Only been over 40 years since I call my first called coyote. Run triple didgets every year nothing but shot gun and 17
Everyone we've hit has been drt. Sub 100yds though.
I am sure they are with that much fun but I am at 81 for the month DRT for every round I have fired but most was inside 30 with the shotgun
