As a landowner who gives permission to people (mainly for shooting rather than trapping, but the same principle applies), Stu talks a lot of common sense here. Another thing that goes a long way is to tell the landowner if you see somethig unusual - perhaps seeing people you don't recognise on the property, or a suspicious vehicle driving through, a fence or a tree down, an injured animal or hearing gunshots. I view the people I allow onto my land as extra eyes and ears, and I'm always grateful when they take the trouble to tell me about something, even if I already know about it.

EXACTLY. I had to kick a bear hunting crew off my place because they got mouthy with my mom (that's 3 strikes in 1) and because they weren't telling me about trespassers.

Exactly! It is about building relationships. And showing some appreciation and just being neighborly goes a long way.
Absolutely. Was given permission to hunt 80 acres this year. On the second hunt I encountered a trespasser who had no idea what the owners name was or where they lived. I ran them off and the owner was appreciative.

I often send gift cards to landowners around Christmas or New Years as a thank you. One thing to stress is to ask EVERY year and don’t just assume because you could last year you still can the following year.?

As a landowner trapper, I try to help the other landowners as much as I can. I trap their nuisance critters for them. Ground hogs under buildings, skunks in barns ETC. That helps keep your permission from year to year. Also ask if they're having critter troubles , and offer to help out. Here we're in cattle country, so letting the landowner know about down fences or cattle that are not looking good or have a new calf away from the herd is a nice thing to do. If you treat them as you would like to be treated it'll work a lot better for everyone. Good job Stu , a lot of good info there.
I started trapping 3 years ago and I'm starting to get more property permission just by talking to people. Being nice goes a long way. Not butt kissing, just a genuine conversation with a land owner.
Another good way is to go to the local farmers hangout like a diner or convenient store. They’re always in there as a group. I picked up over 1100 acres in one yr by simply hanging a sign at their hangout(with the owners permission of course) asking if any farmers or ranchers are having problems with beaver causing flooding or coyotes killing calves during calving season to contact me & put my number on the sign. I had several guys call asking how much I charged. When I told them I wasn’t charging them just asking permission to help them out they were surprised & happily gave me access.
I feel a big part of why your youtube channel is so great is because they channel just a regular mans life, they dont feel scripted and always helpful!
Good advice. I haven't had to ask for permission in years. Landowners call me. One of my landowners is manager for a Farmer's Co-Op. I helped him out with beavers flooding his hay fields so he gives my phone number out when farmers ask him for help with destructive critters. I often have to turn some away because I simply can't keep up with the demand. However, I treat my landowners as if they are doing me a favor and not the other way around.
Companies pay big bucks to consultant to teach employees how to sell! Great points, easy to see why you have the success you do!😊
One thing that I have discovered is offering help. As a high schooler myself, I have found that just by simply leaving your phone number with those older guys and just offering to help them out once in awhile goes a long way. A lot of the times I'll get a phone call and it'll be an older gentleman asking for me to come over and help him unload some feed bags or help work cattle for a day. Just an idea for those younger kids out there.

Good advice. On thing I like to do is if I catch a fox I always tan it and give it to the land owner. They always seem to enjoy things like that and it keeps a good relationship going.
Thank you for sharing your respect for the landowner. As a landowner I appreciate it when people understand that the land is a gift, not a right. Would be glad to have you in my area. Respect is the only way to go. Let the owner and the renter both know of your wishes. Not a problem if we know from the start.
Good advice, got a guy right now who wants me to catch him some rabbits to eat in exchange for me to trap his land, I've got him a few so far! Keep it up Brother!
If your state has a property owner registry (tax assessor office website usually), it will help you see property lines and owners name. Posted before I got to the part in the video where you said this. I had a book with permision slipd printed in it with several on each page. that way the people you ask can see all the others that have accepted you already. this gives them a sense that you are trust worthy..
Thanks for the tips I've never really went up to anyone and asked for permission to hunt there land. I've always stuck to the public land hunting cuz people in my state Michigan are very picky about there land. But this video gave me a better look at how to approach a land owner for permission. I have hunted for 24 years and have never hunted private property. So thanks for the tips
Well... as CCO says, there's a way to go about it to increase your odds of getting a "yes". In a nut shell, be friendly, neighborly, and respectful. Smile and say hello. Being a New Yorker our first thought generally is, "What's this guy selling?" But contrary to popular belief, we're approachable and willing to listen if you don't catch us in the middle of some business. And also as CCO brings up, he gets maybe 1 out of 8 folks to say yes. Just keep at it. Good lookin' out.

Great advise bud i alao have business cards printed up to leave with the people I trap for. So they can refer me to other people and they have my card.
Dont be afraid to offer a hand if they ever need it, sometimes duck farmers flood and do need a extra hand
It’s amazing that America farmers are the same as Irish farmers when it comes to asking for permission.
We're all the same generally. I mean having a field torn up by someone's carelessness or finding a gate left open where you know you closed it, or any number of things, we're all going to react in a similar way - positive or negative depending how we are approached and treated. People skills baby! People skills!
One of my landowners like seeing my catches and like likes when I send him pictures of the catches , I give him some deer jerky and let him use a couple of my cage traps during the summer.

Good advice . I give a small gift around Christmas for allowing me hunt and trap. Some landowners like to see what I get. Key word respect those people. This helps everyone.
Stu this is my second season trapping and have learned a great deal from your videos. Any time I see a new trapper asking questions I just tell them “Coon Creek”.

Great info for new trappers. I've been using most of these techniques for years. Another one I add is to always get written permission. I have these printed out and already with me that has a blank space for the landowners name and a place for them and myself to sign. It states that I have permission to trap the parcel of land and that the landowner isn't responsible for my safety or any of my equipment. A lot of landowners still think they're liable for anyone that's on their property. And they may be depending on which state you live in. But this piece of paper goes a long way towards making them feel comfortable knowing that you're only there for one reason. And that doesn't include trying to cause them any harm.

I always send them a Christmas Card ! Thanking them for the Trapping Permission ! Worked for 45 years !
One other thing I would add. When ever meet or see them, especially the first time is to remove your sunglasses, if they are wearing sunglasses then wait a few minutes and put yours on. 34 years in business tought me that. They want to see excactly who they are dealing with.

Great video, every year my girlfriend and I make up goody baskets for every person that has given us permission. I also do free damage control work through the summer for farms that then let us trap during season. Most of the time it’s raccoons killing chickens. Easy fix

Always wear orange hat when trapping during deer season. I almost got shot by the landowner I had permission from. He took a few shots from the backdoor and I had on brown coveralls.

Hi. Just watch and I 100% agree with what you said in the video. One thing i think you could of talked about a little more is helping land owner out. I have one property where the land owner only let me trap coyotes and every year he let me do more critters and he helps me out by talking to his neighbours. After 5 years now I trap both sides of the road and all the properties 3 miles each way from his place just cuz he put out a good word for me to his neighbors.

Anytime you work on a farmer's land it goes a long way if you're polite and respectful. We did an HDD job on a farmers land for a gas utility company and the farmer had no real say, he wasn't the customer.
BUT.....not making a mess and being polite really can stop the angry calls the owner of my company would get otherwise. And the owner HATES those calls and shit rolls downhill.
Be respectful ie yes sir , no sir etc.. If they say no then thank them for their time. I had a no turn to a yes just because I treated them with respect even though they initially said no.

One suggestion is to have the owner show you where his land boundaries are and if there are any parts of it that he declares off limits. Also, are you allowed to drive onto his property or must you walk.Tell him whether you will be using any firearms in case he hears shots.
Also bring a kid with you and tell them that it is bonding time with your kid
As a landowner I'd say it depends on the kid. If the child is quiet and respectful it goes a long way, if the child butts in, roams around my buildings, answers back then I'll deny the adult any access.

i am the son cousin and nephew of many landowners another good thing to do to keep permission is do not overstep boundaries if they do not want bobcats killed leave the cats alone if they dont want people driving around off the road stay on the road if your not allowed on the place until after hunting season stay off and the last thing is if they need help with muskrats or anyother animal if you can help them do it

When I go ask for permission I'm nervous evrey time I go to ask for new permission. What helps me is thinking I dont have permission to be there anyways so if they say no I'm not out anything.
I worry more about what kind of dogs they have more than them being mean most of the time Landowners are very nice even if they say no.
I know this is off topic but I am having a lot of trouble trapping fox and coyote because my footholds keep getting dug up and I don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

Also I know you dont mean it like this, and most likely not many people even watch the last few seconds of the vid, but "i appreciate the view" might make some people get the wrong impression that they're just a number. I think something like "have a good one" or "thanks for watching".
Respectfully, I think most know that without positive viewer response i.e. a thumbs up, this content wouldn't be here. I could be wrong but, I'm pretty sure it enables CCO to continue on the platform. All good.

I don't think we disagree, promoting the thumbs up is a great way to remind people that a little action on their part goes a long way for the channel as a whole. I was just commenting on the signoff, specifically the line "I appreciate the view". If true growth as well as maintaining a preexisting audience is the goal I feel CCO would best benefit from a sign off that still thanks, but omits the label of "view" to his viewers. Maybe "Thanks for watching and if you enjoyed don't forget to share the channel with your trapping buddies".
I really hope my comment doesn't come off as annoying or overly critical, I've been watching CCO since I was 12 and boarded my first coons, grays, and skunks using his professional fur handling series everytime, there's really no better content out there! His channel is obviously very seasonal but the dedication to content creation even while average views are down is inarguable.
