I Made a Lush Jungle Oasis: Fire-Bellied Toad Paludarium

  • My Fire-Bellied Toads are old and I wanted to give them a retirement home and friends.
    I have no intention of building another paludarium for them after this. I feel like I've learned and developed my skills enough that this will stand the test of time. I hope at least. My hope from here is to let these toads live out their lives here and hopefully pass on their genes to future generations if possible.

    I apologize as this comment is slightly off topic, but felt this was the best way to make sure you got it. I have wanted to thank you for posting these videos, they gave me the final piece I needed to build my own 560 gallon vivarium.
    A little over 30 years ago, I attended my first orchid show, and at that show they had a planted 4'x 4'x 4' jungle tank filled with stunning plants. In truth, and hazy memory, this was likely just a showpiece prop made to look like a planted tank. However, that memory has stayed with me for all these years as something I wanted to have myself one day. For many years, things like money, time, moving, access to materials, and even doubt would stop me from building something on this scale, but it never really left my thoughts as something I wanted to do. Eventually, I purchased a home, got a job that made good money, had the time, and wanted to give it a shot. The problem was I couldn't figure out a design that I liked, nor find a source of reasonable priced glass as for some reason I was stuck on this being an all glass enclosure... Then I found your video on the 600 gallon vivarium... and everything clicked. especially with the doors. Again, I was stuck on some sort of giant Exo-Terra shaped tank with swing out doors, that it never even crossed my mind to look at sliding doors. With those final pieces of design, I finally was able to construct the vivarium I've been dreaming of for so many year. I started the build in May, and started planting in September. It has been amazing to see it to come together over the last couple months, and start to thrive, and I doubt it would have happened had I not found your videos.

    To this day, your animal husbandry is the prime example of quality not quantity. And it has become a rising subject of reptile husbandry, which is good that it is being addressed. Your channel is the prefect place to go to to learn how to make beautiful and functional environments for both your and the animals enjoyment. It has inspired me, and of course many others of the serpasquad

    4:17 man i know it doesnt seem needed, but for stuff like thsi you gotta wear safety glasses. i was trimming a small piece of wire, routine stuff just like this, and a piece flew off into my eye and gave me permanent eye damage.

      @goosenotmaverick1156 Месяц назад +13

      As much as I'd probably do the same as he did, I agree. Eye protection is extremely important. I wear it more often than I used to for sure.
      If it wasn't for eye protection (riding goggles) I would have lost my right eye when I was 15. So I 100% agree.
      It's better to wear them and nothing happen than the other way around, for sure. And that light diffuser likes to do weird stuff when cut.

    • @yutub561
      @yutub561 Месяц назад +5

      @goosenotmaverick1156 same here. I don't wear them nearly as often as I should. I got a bulk box and put them all around my house in the rooms I do hobby stuff to give myself the best chance at remembering

    • @goosenotmaverick1156
      @goosenotmaverick1156 Месяц назад +2

      @yutub561 same here. I buy em a box at a time too. I even leave a pair in each car so long as I remember to replace them when I use or give them out.
      I didn't always try this hard, but I'm also the only person in any of my family to not have to wear corrective lenses (until age catches up) so I try to take good care of my eyes.
      Safety squint is a scary thing to watch, honestly. As an electrician I see a lot of folks on job sites not using PPE in any form and it gets scary.

    • @signupacc3353
      @signupacc3353 Месяц назад

      @@HenryBailey-m6y yep they were all wild caught because it was so much cheaper than captive breeding. they used to range anywhere from $5-10 us dollars. now captive bred ones when you can find them average about $45 for dully colored juveniles. CB toads usually dont have the boldly bright bellies.

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  Месяц назад +5

      Yes they were extremely prevalent back in the day because they were all wild caught. Now they're all captive bred, so there's less of them. I think they'll have a resurgence at some point.

      I used to keep three of them in a 20 gallon tank. I had about 50/50 land/water with a large shallow area (about 3/4 inch deep) with "channels" running just a couple inches wide. I set this up specifically so the feeder fish I had in the tank might become prey to the toads. They'd swim into the "channels" and not have anywhere to go if the toad came up behind them. It took a LONG time, but I finally saw it happen.

    Now, a question regarding the appearance of the front of a tank: Could you make a single long glass door out of one sheet of glass and a single set of hinges? So in effect, you are using a single sheet of glass to make a long door that would give you a clean line of sight and still all the advantages of being front-opening, but I think a single long sheet of glass weight resting on one set of strong hinges would need some kine of support at bottom of sheet L______ ? . Thank you for the content you share over the years as I sit in the UK, and winter rain dances off my roof.

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  Месяц назад +1

      That would be the ideal option and I've done similar stuff for other builds, but I haven't been pleased with how they hold up long-term.

    • @jamesgodfrey1322
      @jamesgodfrey1322 Месяц назад

      @@SerpaDesign My thought would be to use a metal L_______l. In effect, you slip the glass into a long metal shelf cross-section, in effect a U. This metal sheath then runs down the side of the glass, turns, then runs along the bottom of the glass, and for extra support could be Turn and run up the other side L_____I (I have seen setup been done for a hot power box we need to see into in the past).
      The hinges are a set of 3 heavy-duty ones to stop the sagging top, middle, and bottom of L. The lock pin on the other side helps support the glass. Your tank lip, aka the glass you use to hold substrate /water in etc, is also covered by the door, which fully covers the whole of the front of the tank.

    Would love to see you add a short clip at the end with “Build Time/Cost” maybe. I know your purpose is more about the art and creativity. But as an avid fish keeper we all know aquascaping and scaping can cost a fortune and an incredible amount of time.

    Could you make a paludarium similar to this from materials of local nature? I think that would be interesting aswell.

    My blood python is a lot less jumpy now that she's in a front opening tank. Makes for more pleasant interactions.

    100% silicone does not mean that 100% of what is in the tube is silicone. They have plenty of chemicals that you do not want in your tank. You should use aquarium silicone.
