@Cliff Hanley World economics is very complex and i don't pretend to be an expert but here is my understanding of it. The debt America owes China ,Japan and others is in treasury securities. You can look at it this way....on the world stage, countries are run like businesses and they often invest in each other by way of treasury bills,notes and bonds.America is heavily invested in China, japan and others with these sorts of treasury securities and visa versa. ( they are heavily invested in america also) . This is done on a sort of buy now pay later deal. If the US refuse to pay china, then china has the option of dumping these securities onto the open market (for others to buy). This would send the american economy into a tail spin because they would lose their total investment.but it would also hurt china as they would also lose a lot of money because the price of the treasury securities would drop drastically. This in turn would cause panic sales from other countries and the worlds economy would be in danger of collapsing. (and that's no good for anyone) So imagine you had a business and i brought $1000000 worth of shares in it. This would drive your share prices up, making your company worth more money. But then if i sold them all in one go, your share prices would drop drastically, making your other investors nervous and start to "panic sell" because they would fear losing ALL their money. This would make your company worth less money. The other thing is, americas credibility as a "business" would be shot and other countries wouldn't want to invest in america or american owned companies and they would be wary of america investing in their countries or companies owned by them. (put simply, nobody would want to do business with america). So all countries (including america) have to operate under the rules in order to maintain the world economy. With regards to your last question. The debt of the public forms part of a countries total debt and just like foreign countries, citizens can also buy bonds issued by their own government. Which is in effect lending their own government money. Governments can also borrow money from the world bank which is owned by 187 different countries. (most of the world countries are members of this). So when america borrows from the world bank, it is in fact borrowing from a bank in which it has part ownership of. so put simply, it's borrowing money from itself as well as other countries because they all own the bank together. If America was to start selling off it's own shares, their shares in the bank could become worth less than they paid for them. Also they would miss out on a large portion of the banks profits. It's worth mentioning that the world bank was set up just after world war two, in order to help the poorer countries, by lending them money to build infrastructure. So if a major investor like the US was to start selling off it's shares it could upset the world economy which would ultimately hurt America. Also, being a major share holder in the world bank, gives a country a position of power, and america doesn't want to lose that.

Hardly enough to pay for a billion dollar wall. Besides, even if we saved a significant amount of money on it, that would go towards fixing the massive deficit that Trump created with his tax cuts

@Cliff Hanley World economics is very complex and i don't pretend to be an expert but here is my understanding of it. The debt America owes China ,Japan and others is in treasury securities. You can look at it this way....on the world stage, countries are run like businesses and they often invest in each other by way of treasury bills,notes and bonds.America is heavily invested in China, japan and others with these sorts of treasury securities and visa versa. ( they are heavily invested in america also) . This is done on a sort of buy now pay later deal. If the US refuse to pay china, then china has the option of dumping these securities onto the open market (for others to buy). This would send the american economy into a tail spin because they would lose their total investment.but it would also hurt china as they would also lose a lot of money because the price of the treasury securities would drop drastically. This in turn would cause panic sales from other countries and the worlds economy would be in danger of collapsing. (and that's no good for anyone) So imagine you had a business and i brought $1000000 worth of shares in it. This would drive your share prices up, making your company worth more money. But then if i sold them all in one go, your share prices would drop drastically, making your other investors nervous and start to "panic sell" because they would fear losing ALL their money. This would make your company worth less money. The other thing is, americas credibility as a "business" would be shot and other countries wouldn't want to invest in america or american owned companies and they would be wary of america investing in their countries or companies owned by them. (put simply, nobody would want to do business with america). So all countries (including america) have to operate under the rules in order to maintain the world economy. With regards to your last question. The debt of the public forms part of a countries total debt and just like foreign countries, citizens can also buy bonds issued by their own government. Which is in effect lending their own government money. Governments can also borrow money from the world bank which is owned by 187 different countries. (most of the world countries are members of this). So when america borrows from the world bank, it is in fact borrowing from a bank in which it has part ownership of. so put simply, it's borrowing money from itself as well as other countries because they all own the bank together. I hope this helps answer your question.

So things like ,interest and fees on loans it's made to different countries, investments, and also contributions made by it's members (particularly the wealthier ones.) who are essentially investing (buying shares) in the bank. So that means the richer countries have a larger share in the bank and therefore make more money out of the banks profits.
@Cliff HanleyWell Cliff this is where it gets a bit complicated. America is one of the biggest shareholders in the world bank. If America was to start selling off it's own shares, their shares in the bank could become worth less than they paid for them. Also they would miss out on a large portion of the banks profits. It's worth mentioning that the world bank was set up just after world war two, in order to help the poorer countries, by lending them money to build infrastructure. So if a major investor like the US was to start selling off it's shares it could upset the world economy which would ultimately hurt America. Also, being a major share holder in the world bank, gives a country a position of power, and america doesn't want to lose that.
