    I hate reading negative reviews because I feel like they affect my opinion too much. I could be really enjoying a book and then half way through I’ll read a review on goodreads and then start seeing everything wrong with it or questioning my opinion

      I'm the opposite. I love reading negative reviews because most of the time negative reviews make me want to read the book (and I find them more helpful and credible than positive reviews). I found some of my favorite books and authors through negative reviews.

      Negative reviews help me judge if a book is worth reading. Many good reviews will say things like ‘THIS BOOK IS SO AMAZING YOU NEED TO READ IT’ and then they’ll just repeat the synopsis of the book.
      However, negative reviews point out everything that is wrong with a book, if I disagree, I read the book. If I agree, I probably don’t

Sometimes they open my eyes to something I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise and it helps me understand better which is awesome! I only know things from the perspective of my experiences. I think it depends how it's stated, some people like state their negative bias as "constructive criticism" or "fact". You have to be weary of those people because they'll always find something to pick at no matter what.

    • @sonichero7
      @sonichero7 4 года назад +2

      Pink I agree. You have to be aware of the difference between criticism and simply someone's opinion. Criticism is when you're told you could improve on improve on something and someone's opinion is when they say you're automatically bad because you're work didn't for their tastes, so you have to listen to your critics, but also try not to gear your work to appeal to one person.

    Cassandra Clare has a history of cyberbullying, manipulation and plagiarism. Years ago she wrote a Harry Potter fanfiction, the Draco Trilogy (later turned into City of Bones) that became really popular, to the point that it drew the attention of published authors like Holly Black who helped CC get published. The fanfiction had entire scenes lifted from published books, word for word, without credit: she was published thanks to her plagiarized writing. Although the fanfiction was bringing views and traffic to the site it was published on, the site BANNED her for the blatant plagiarism. She even changed her pen name after that (it was Claire, now it’s Clare). When people started calling her out, she cyberbullied them and threatened legal action. She was an adult with a job and a fanbase, bullying and threatening teenagers. She has never once apologized for her plagiarism and consequent behavior. Instead, a few years ago, at the peak of her fame, she shared on twitter the name of a fan of hers who had asked (heartbroken) if the rumors about her plagiarism filled past were true. CC said that she was the heartbroken one, here, the victim. Her rabid fans got into action, and the girl had to APOLOGIZE and delete her twitter.
    On another occasion, she convinced her fanfiction fans to buy her an ipod, then to buy new laptops for her and her roomates, and said the excess money would be given to charity; of course there was no trace of any donation to any charity (laptopgate). At one point she tried to set up an online shop to sell merchandise for her fanfiction, which thankfully never happened.
    Fanlore has different pages dedicated to the shit she’s pulled.
    Her books are boring, full of purple prose and annoying characters (fun fact: many fans of her fanfiction hated City of Bones; the novel had many plot points of the fanfic, but lacked all the beautiful scenes CC had plagiarized lol). The writing is mediocre, the narrative very problematic (incest, racism and homophobia, misogyny, biphobia, ableism and more).
    Homophobia: everyone praises her for writing token secondary queer characters that disappear for whole books and get mocked and used as comedic relief. Her main mIm couple involves a 17 year old dating a guy that’s hundreds of years old, because the predatory queer man stereotype is just what a YA book needs, am I right? When toyboy finds out that ancient guy is bi and has dated women, the author’s biphobia really jumps out. But CC is actually an incredible ally! Why? Because once she sensed that she could make more money off her mlm couple, she started making comments about their sex life and said she wanted to write a story about their first time having sex. Then she started writing a series centered around ancient guy, when she couldn't give a damn about him in the main series. Fetish = allyship. Who knew.
    Racism: the few, all secondary characters of color are half demon, while the white characters are half angels :):):) In later series, the few characters of color that do have angel blood… are actually half white :):):) In CoB the two secondary characters of color are half demon; the third character of color (a black woman, like me, how nice:):)) turns out to be an actual demon and gets slaughtered by our valiant white heroes :):):)
    Ableism: her one and only autistic character (never addressed as such on paper, only on twitter lol) in a later series is infantilized and stereotyped. The narrative focuses on how much of a martyr his older brother is for putting up with his weirdness. It's especially sad when you consider that CC has an autistic relative (of which she talked about when asked about Ty).
    Transphobia: I have no personal experience with transphobia irl, but my trans friends do and they were extremely bothered by how the one trans characters is portrayed: like being trans is this big dark, shameful secret.
    Clare created this universe, no matter how almost plagiarized the characters and plots are from works like Nightrunner, Mortal Engines and Infernal Devices (Philip Reeve), Infernal Devices (K.W. Jeter), and many others. She created this universe populated by demons and angels and faeries, and still she decided the society her darlings live in should be queerphobic and racist. "It's metaphore!"... right. That's why the characters of color are hald demon and get killed.
    Misogyny: in every one of her series the main female character hates other girls on sight because how dare they be pretty? MC is “not like other girls”, and other girls are often slut-shamed (irl CC slut-shamed the actor that played Isabelle in the tv show). But, hey, CC is a feminist because her female characters fight wearing leather and high heels! It’s not like it’s a terrible choice of clothing that would hinder your ability to fight and get you killed! If there’s one universal law in the books, applied to males and females with no discrimination, is that being hot is all that matters. CC will make sure to remind you of just how hot her male characters are in pretty much every damn sentence.
    Another law is that a Herondale can never die a virgin (one Herondale has sex a couple of hours after his best friend/platonic soulmate in the world has died… with his best friend’s fiancée! When they are prisoners and about to die. They grieve the bf/fiancé for 0.5 seconds before getting it on, jeez), or without having sex one last time (another Herondale brings a condom to freaking HELL so he can deflower his gf when they could get killed at any second).
    Her characters are all the same in every series, they even look the same, she just changes their names (and often NOT EVEN THAT lol).
    She has a huge INCEST fetish, not only in her books. On twitter she said that she ships Damon and Stefan (brothers from TVD) and liked the fact that it'd be an abusive relationship. The Mortal Instruments, title of her first saga, was actually the title of an INCESTUOUS RonxGinny fanfiction she wrote in the same period as the Draco Trilogy. In the published TMI, the main male character’s adoptive brother is in love with him, and his adoptive sister finds him hot. But even the one and only lesbian character in book 3 finds him hot, literally no one can resist the MMC (who is exactly like any other irritating YA love interests, btw). The main character Clary literally kisses her biological brother, Sebastian, who in later books is obsessed with her and tries to r*pe her. She and Jace kiss several times when they believe they are siblings, the faerie queen even forces one oof the kisses, because incest is such a cute fetish. Of course Clare knew C and J were not really brother and sister, but the readers did NOT know that. She made them kiss several times anyway.
    There was a sudden rise in negative reviews after the movie, and then the tv show, came out for 2 simple reasons:
    1) People started researching Clare, found out about her past, and started analyzing her books critically;
    2) CC's behavior regarding the movie and show.
    Before the movie came out, she said she was constantly on set, working behind the scenes with the actors, writers and director (her instagram was full of pictures of her on set with the actors). She said she was very “interfere-y” (such a way with words, mh?). Then the movie came out and flopped, and she said she had never, ever been involved, no sir, I’m just a poor author I have no say in anything.
    When the show started becoming more popular than the books, she started hating on it and even directed some of her fans to complain to the show writers. Then season 2 was announced with a different writer, and she saw her chance: she said she would love to be more involved and maybe write a few episodes (can you imagine? t h e i n c e s t). That didn’t happen, and the hate resumed.
    Anytime someone calls her out on her awful, petty, bullying behavior, she plays the “You all are misogynists! You only hate me because I’m a successful female writer!” card. To the point that Rick Riordan, once her friend, stopped defending her online, talking to her and dedicating his books to her.
    One of my best friends was a big fan of hers. But then he started seeing her behavior when the movie and then show came out, and after a bit of research he found out the truth. He was very disappointed, to the point that he deleted his blog and channel where he'd previously praised her. I was never a fan of hers, though, and still I am upset by all this… I can’t imagine how disappointed the ex fans are.
    I know this booktuber won't care about any of this, but maybe some viewers will. Please be careful of who you support with your hard-earned money. You deserve better.

      You don't have to trust my word of course. There are several fanlore pages dedicated to what she's done and countless blogposts with sources that you can find by googling cassandra clare cyberbully, laptopgate, plagiarism, problematic, homophobic, etc.
      You can also check the anti cc/anti cassandra clare tag on tumblr, though you'll have to sift through all the posts to find the one with sources and links, because many are only about personal opinions (which are still good for issues like racism, himophobia, misogyny, etc.! Nothing better than readers' opinions who are affected in real life by said issues to see the problematic aspects of an author's writing; but for links to her plagiarism and cyberbullying you'll have to dig a little, because the fandom started talking about it years ago when the tv show was announced; it was then that the plagiarism resurfaced and she did some more bullying and manipulation, that some people on tumblr have suffered first hand).

    I DNF'd City of Bones after a couple of chapters lol. I tried to read it because my friends were reading it and loving it. Not my thing. I think I enjoyed Throne of Glass when I read it several years ago but the second book made me dislike the entire series and having learned a lot since then (writing-wise), I would probably give it 2 stars if I were to rate it now. I personally enjoy reading negative reviews of Fifty Shades myself. When people are counting how many times the main character bites her lip--it's better than the actual book (which I read, why I don't know). But perspective is great and I think even if we love a book we can learn a lot by reading the negative reviews so kudos to you for making this video.

    I wanna know what he read in the first chapter to even know about the romance in hunger games? Cause I’m pretty sure the first chapter is background info nothing happens. And if he read the book, he’d know everyone hates the games that’s what the whole series is about. Sheesh, I agree with you Sasha!

    I've gotten called an unreliable reviewer by some people because I compare a lot of books to Throne of Glass and other popular YA books. I can't help it that I like what I like and what I don't like.

    The selection series is one series that I loved. It was like eating cotton candy. Fluffy and trashy lol but that’s also why I can understand that some people hate it. I also understand that America is extremely aggravating. So... I get it!

    I absolutely hate present tense and will usually put a book down because of it-it used to be taboo to write in present tense. However, you shouldn't review a book if you have only read one chapter.

    "A fanzine is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest. The term was coined in an October 1940 science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and first popularized within science fiction fandom, and from there it was adopted by other communities." It´s nothing new

    The only one on your list I liked was Throne of Glass lol. I am currently reading City of Bones for the first time and I agree with the review about Jace so far, he makes me cringe. I hate The Hunger Games trilogy but I liked the first two books when I read them though and I find it funny how the person said he hated the romance when he didn't even get to the actual romance.

    It makes me really laugh that your mom told you about the hunger games, because I love that series and I brought my mom with me to watch the first movie: she was shocked and seriously concerned about my mental stability 😆😆😆 she would have never suggested that book to me 😂 and she almost stopped me when I choosed it as the topic to link all the subjects to (italian school) for my high school graduation exam 😆 she really hates it... But remembers every scene like a charm... It's impressive 😅

    My fav think about people negatively reviewing the Hunger Games cause “kids can’t run a revolution” is that we literally have children, in the United States, protesting gun violence and pushing back on Victim blaming policies that put students in the hot seat, not the NRA.

    A lot of people tended to not like the Beautiful Creatures series. I can understand why, because some of the characters can be a little annoying. The magic system isn't explained very well, but those books are a guilty pleasure for me.

    This video feels like you are trying to convince yourself that the reviews you got are okay and normal. They're not. you can just say that your book didn't turn out as good as you expected. You rushed to publish a book when you weren't ready.. you should've focused on your education not saying that you need a degree but you could tell from the way the book was written that you're not ready for writing. Ofc u read a lot of books but that's not what makes a good writer. You have an audience who loves and adores you and to me it felt like a betrayal because I'd rather have waited a couple more years for a good book from you than getting a shitty one now.

    Reviews don't matter at all. In Art you either like stuff or not, or like stuff a little or don't like little things of a work. For example: Many "reviews" say, that the Twilight movies are bad. I think they are VERY good! Are they good? Depends on the viewer.
    So Sasha, as long as you like your own stuff, you don't need to care about any reviews. Not even the good ones!
    The only problem with reviews I see, is when they affect potential buyers that would have liked the work. They scare away the wrong audience. That is why I hate to see reviews before I watch a movie. I watch them for myself and like or not like them by my own standards.
    Greetings from Germany. Keep up the good work!

    You not specifying what you’re reading negative reviews on in the title made it kinda clickbaity don’t you think? A lot of people thought you were reading negative reviews on your books

  • @RyonRykal
    @RyonRykal 4 года назад

    I understand, that you don't make this video about your own book's reviews. I wouldn't either. Because I don't care. EDIT: Saying that I "don't care" is not even on point. It does not matter. Telling your opinion on art is kind of pointless to me. Except of when you talk to a friend and are interested in what they think about the stuff you love or don't like.
    Reviews in newspapers or blogs are really not my stile. At least ALWAYS judge art for yourself and by yourself FIRST! Thanks and bye bye.
