My most baffling gas mask, the French ANP M51

- The French/Belgian A.N.P. M51 gas mask/respirator is one of the weirdest gas masks in my collection.
Most gas masks I can decide if they are poorly designed, hit and miss or excellent designs, but this mask is weird. I've owned it for about six years and I can't decide if I like it or not.
The name of the mask is "Appareil Normal de Protection" meaning Normal Protection Device in English. There was two particular models of this the M51 and the slightly improved M53.
The mask is made from a good rubber, but with an awful exhale valve/voice diaphragm which can compromise the protective qualities of the mask, it has a working Tissot system and early plastic lenses, but it also has a weird strap system and no oral-nasal cup.
As explained in the video, I can't decide if I like this mask or not.

The only (flawed) reason I can think of for making the exhale valve rubber so thin is to enhance its voice diaphragm mimicking abilities.
I'm just thinking back to when I was making waterproof containers for my speaker. Thin materials (or better a thin diaphragm) transmitted sounds infinitely better than thick materials.
Just my .2 cents.
Yeah that would make perfect sense, but I think that's why most masks use separate voice diaphragms to exhale valves, because combing them weakens the mask.

I own one of these m51 masks and the exhale diaphragm does have some problems if it gets too dusty. Nothing some water and gentle cleaning cant fix! Makes a great painting/utility mask

Finally figured out what kind of gas mask that I had because of this video, very informative.
the surplus ones in the US are in amazing condition for some reason like it comes with the original FRENCH bag with filter, hose (don't know why) anti fog stick, and spare rubber star piece all under 30 dollars.
That's pretty cool.
but the problem is shipping absolutely gastly like at times more than 30 dollars

If it is in the filter it is asbestos and you wouldn't use it, if it is in the mask it is talcum powder which is harmful but get a damp rag and wash the insides
how would you know if it has asbestos? my friend opened up both types and said it only contains charcoal.
No asbestos is almost invisible to the human eye without a microscope, it's probably talc or dust, just wipe it out.

Maybe the the French coated the exhale valve with some sort of wax or something along the lines of it, to prevent it ripping during gas attack
Trying to find an ANP M51/53, seem rather rare despite most pictures of French soldiers wearing that rather than the M51.
Also found a supplier for the French chemical suit seen in the first Gulf War. It's called a Tenue 66, a French website called Toutencamo sells them for around €20, postage is around €20 too.
I really want a Butyl rubber suit the Saudis had during the Gulf war, they look just like the Sardaukar suits from Dune.

Weaponsandstuff93 It's a shame suits are harder to identify by name than masks. They typically have really generic names so finding them, let alone buying them is a struggle.
I got mine in a belgian surplus store near me i got it fro 15€ it came sealed in a bag and with an unopened 80's filter inside the bag i got some 40mm for particulate protection so i'm set for that and i think i made a great deal for it

There are now some M53s Ebay, located in Texas. The seller doesn't ship outside of the US but maybe if you had a stateside friend they could grab it and send it to you.

I love this kind of masks, very easy to produce/cheap and effective, If the exhale rubber was stronger it would be better than the Gp5 because the Gp5 has a bad vision not to mention it makes it almost impossible to communicate and you can barely hear while the M51 your ears are exposed and the exhale rubber works like a speech diafragm
But what about GP-5m

I'm belgian i picked a factory new one for 10€ with a sealed filter and the mask in the original plastic bag and in the tissue carry bag it's made in 1981 i think and the mask was guaranteed until 1991 i think i made a good deal i picked up some 40mm filter for 5€ sealed in 1991 in a vacuum aluminium bag

Seeing the voice diaphragm rubber while you have the mask on starting around 8:15 looks like the thin rubber will tear open any second 😢
It's the main weak point of the mask.

I noticed they have one of these in the surplus store where I work and the exhale valve is a circle, not a star shape
They might have done a few different designs over the years they were used by both France and Belgium, as well as there being a later M53 version, and all the previous French, Belgian and Italian masks of similar design.

I've done a few videos on good cheap surplus masks but maybe try the Israeli M15, 4a1 or the German M65.

I own the ANP m51 - 3 and got it surplus, but it was riddled with talc powder, which came out in one wash. I got it surplus for 10$, and the seal works alright. It's very uncomfortable and the tisseau tubes are shitty, in that the eyes still fog like a bitch. The little exhale valve is very delicate and can fuck up occasionally, which would kill some poor soul on the field. I have an extra, if you would like to have it, free of charge, to test and all that.

jeremiah perez Buy one of the Israeli masks and filters, they are one size fits all so you don't have to worry about that. Also, the filters will be safe and it uses a very common 40mm thread.

eBay is your primary source of Nato filters. Otherwise look for a specific brand, idk like Scott or Drager maybe.

My lenses were glass. I swapped out for custom lexan lenses
My rubber diaphragms rotted out. All of em.
I modded this for paintball and gutted the old filter and installed a cpu fan into it and an ATI video card fan in the exhale vent. That way i stayed cool when i played at ION.
I have an one of those m-51’s, how can you date the filter? My filter says A-9/53
What does the filter look like? As the mask was in service for such a long time it could have come with various filters.
If it's a 1953 filter it will contain asbestos so don't use it.

I have this one and i use a hungarian a2 filter from 2001 and it does pretty alright, can you get replacement exhale valves for this mask?
It's possible but sadly spares and repairs are harder to find for masks than brand new masks.

Yeah duck tape will patch holes but not work as a valve.

Technically the Chinese M65 they sold/gave to the NVA and Vietcong.
The PMK prototype had a giant cheek filter.

No i am from the USA also the one im thinking of might be the PMK because it has only one gaint cheek filter on the leftside of what look to be a GP mask with the voice diofram [ sorry for my spelling ] above where the filter goes.

Bad mask. It has some good features but it's exhale valve is too fragile for combat use. Perhaps too fragile for industrial use even.
Why would the French update their gas mask when they dont really go to war any way
France was actually in a lot of wars during the 20th century.
