    Great info! My cannas and Musa basjoo here in zone 6 are coming back strong, even after our -9F low this winter!

    Another cold-hardy palm is 'rhapidophyllum hystrix' - needle palm. Hardy to zone 5. Mine in Cincinnati have survived 3 consecutive nights of -10°, and (since 2004) have grown to 4' tall.

      Awesome great result on your palm! Yes of course it is one of the best. This video was about non palm tropical looking plants.

      Amazing! How do you cover them? Do you use heating?

    ❤ Fantastic info. Thanks so much for sharing. I live in zone 6 area. This is very helpful

    Great list. I would also add Rose of Sharon, which is a slightly different hardy type of hibiscus, the giant hostas, and some of the large Miscanthus grasses. And who said ferns weren't tropical! I've been to a few tropical areas of the world and ferns are always present.

    Always great information!, The hibiscus I have they're awesome, I've had my bananas for 15 years now, I've tried leaving my cannas and elephant ears in ground but for some reason no luck so I dig em out! Zone 7a they are the staple for my garden! Blessings 🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲

      Thanks for watching as always! If you can kill a pink China EE I'd be surprised, give that one a try but I'd recommend aloha better.. Might want to try canna again overwintering. Read down in this thread a bit. I know in zone 6 KY they spread fast. I've never lost any here after 2018 and last winter. I have dozens of plants. Here are zone 5 folks www.houzz.com/discussions/1789135/9-things-i-ve-learned-about-canna-in-zone-5-storage-planting. Make sure to plant in full sun.

    Great video! Im thinking of leaving my basjoo and cannas in the ground over the winter with some sort of cover. Also hardy yucca like filamentosa is a great option for colder climates.

    Aucuba 'Mr Goldstrike' took -5F here and -30F windchill with no damage. They look like crotons so definitely a nice addition to a cold hardy tropical garden! Love all of your mentions, too!

    Another great video. I’ve never tried keeping cannas or elephant ears outside in zone 6. I will experiment this year

    Great list, I think these are definitely the main ones. I would add Yucca flaccida, Yucca filamentosa as options too, maybe some Crinums like C. bulbispermum. There are a few nice trees too like Kalopanax septemlobus; Tetrapanax also comes back from the base after winter. For large leaves, maybe Rheum palmatum or Astilboides tabularis.

    What canna varieties would you say are good in zone 6? I’m tempted to plant some if they’ll overwinter like my Musa basjoo

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  5 месяцев назад

      Almost any of the medium to large varieties. Plant in Early May and get them going well. Plant delights and Brians botanicals have a lot. Don't order on ebay because of disease. I have tropicanna, Red hubert, indica red, lemon puch which are all medium to large. Avoid dwarf ones.

      @@tntropics Thank you! I will get them if they are at an agreeable price and have basically the same treatment as my basjoos in the winter. Thanks!
