It's from the 1988 documentary "Comic Book Confidential". Stan Lee, Will Eisner, Robert Crumb, Bill Griffith and several others are also interviewed and read one of their comics like this.

I too was collecting records and 45s but few years ago I had the same realization. It never ends and my lot of my spare money was disappearing and I was running out of space. So I gave it up.

Same here. If I found a really great tune on a record, I was proud to add it to my collection, a great collection.
Now, you can hear any song from any era on RUclips. For free. My collection is now worthless.

@@KeithOtisEdwardsit will never be worthless as long as you can hold the recordings in your hand and play them on your ‘box’.

HP was the first one I ever read who put record collecting into words accurately when he said that you find yourself not necessarily WANTING a record, but NEEDING it...

Good job mate. I met this guy at my job who apparently knew Pekar and Crumb. Showed me some letters and drawings they sent him. Needless to say I identify with Mr. Pekar. RIP

I can empathize. If I have extra money and say I’m out wandering around, browsing at flea markets, junk stores, etc. I’ll often buy records, books, toys I don’t need just to do it. Now, if I take the time to examine these purchases, I’m often pleasantly surprised at music or story or whatever it is I was unfamiliar with, but buying just to buy. That’s a habit I’d like to lose.

Same. I was an avid fan of comic books in my childhood, but then had my collection taken away from me because of bad grades (some of them were kind of valuable, like Valliant's Nintendo Comics System line and a few issues of Marvel's Spider-Ham from the 80s). I think my interest in collecting for a long time was trying to cope with that loss, but eventually it got so big that it kind of had to stop at some point. Eventually I did find that original comic book collection when I moved, but most of it was unfortunately eaten away by rats

Can anyone recommend one of Harvey's books where he discusses jazz and his time reviewing records for Downbeat?

I wish I knew what the background song is.
Not being a jazz-collector it's nearly impossible to find that out!
I tried Miles Davis - So What,, / Art Blakey - Moanin' / John Coltrane - Blue Train / Boots Randolph - Tuxedo Junction / Microscopic Septet - Baghdad Blues / Modern Jazz Quartet - Watergate Blues / John Zorn - A Shot In The Dark........
They all sound ok to me but WHAT IS IT... :o

NOTE to Viewers: I wish I could had told Harv...I understand...honestly I do...no bullshit. But, he's gone I missed my chance.
Post Script to Harvey: 'Sorry Harvey for failing again to show some compassion for jazz and ...thanks for not including me in any of your characterizations.'
