9 August 1984 BBC1 - Olympic ident & Top of the Pops

This BBC ident for the Olympics was a nice idea, but sadly Chroma Key was still fairly primitive in those days.

No chroma key was used in the making of the ident - it's all a model, with electronic keying to colour it in.

I think a proper term is "Luminance Keying".
Essentially, it uses a B&W image to overlay color onto it, or key a certain area onto another picture, depending on the brightness of the source to be keyed from. This used to be a standard in captions and displaying logos before character generators (or chyrons) replaced it.
