  • Previously uploaded to RUclips, here's the opening from 8/3/84 to ABC's daily coverage of the 1984 Summer Olympics. This also gives a snapshot at all of their coverage on a typical day, and some great names from the past roster as well. The song playing as they review that day's events is the instrumental version of "Olympia" by Sergio Mendes.

God, I wish I had a time machine. I'd take my family back once a month to vacation in the 80s. God what a mess we're living in now. There's something amazing about the Olympics. Men and women pushing themselves right to their very limits, to the point of tears. It's beautiful to see the hugs and handshakes between competitors, especially when winners comfort those who came in just behind them. How could there be the slightest shame is doing your utter human best, against the best, in front of the whole world? Absolutely beautiful.

I still get chills hearing the Olympic intro music and the LA 84 logo coming into view. I love it!

I remember Jim McKay's initial intro, "There were no live cameras the last time the Olympic Games were here in Los Angeles, no helicopters to screw-- to CRUISE through the skies," Hee hee! I love him so much.

What about Bob Costas? What I loved about him was how he got you riveted to the TV every time he broadcast the games. Especially epic was him alongside Dick Enberg during the Atlanta Olympics on NBC! 😊

Well, I was a kid when this was happening and I can tell you: it WAS cool back then but like you said "almost 40 years ago" just means I'm old now! Enjoy your youth as much as possible!

@@BLACKAAROW Cool, well I'm less than 20 years older than you so I guess it could be worse! As a kid the 84 games were awesome because it seemed like the whole country (and every company, practically) got behind it. I hope when it returns out here in 28 that it has the same energy!

I was 16 at the time. USA was dominant at the time when the USSR and other nations boycotted. 83 US Golds in 1984 over 80 USSR Gold in the US boycotted 1980 games. Tables turned.

    • @brandonmorris9889

To this day, that's STILL the most ever Olympic gold medals won by a single host country.

    • @ladyi7609

And it would've been far easier for the USSR to rack up those gold medals considering how the dominating Chinese Olympians also boycotted the 1980 summer games, whereas in the 1984 L.A. games the Chinese made a return to competition as you can tell from this video.

Thing was, the Soviet Union had nearly won an unheard of 200 medals despite the fact that there were only 81 Nations taking part. Of course, that was due to charges of PEDs and rigged judging by Olympic referees. The PEDs I doubt it, but there was definitely something amiss about those 195 and 126 medals the Soviets and East Germans had won respectfully. In fact, it was revealed that the USSR team was planning to start up a nationwide doping program to get them ready for the LA Olympics before they decided to boycott. The East Germans seemed to relish their own use of PEDs in order to make their athletes perform even stronger and end up winning a whole lot more medals than expected.
