- This video is about the 2nd core train route underneath Munich's city center.
The construction of Munich's "2. Stammstrecke" marks a pivotal effort to enhance the city's rail infrastructure. This ambitious project involves the creation of a second main tunnel parallel to the existing Stammstrecke, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve overall efficiency. Leveraging modern engineering and sustainable design, the new tunnel promises an upgraded travel experience for passengers. Munich's commitment to transparent communication and community engagement underscores its dedication to smart, interconnected urban development. The project not only addresses the city's immediate transportation needs but also positions Munich as a leader in forward-thinking urban planning.

I thought this was a B1M Video at first, nice
Same 😂
Okay I see you impera1M

@@AdamBurianek92 That’s way better 😝
On one hand, I'm plagued by this situation on a daily basis. On the other hand it is funny, that after 15 years of arrogantly laughing about Stuttgart the Bavarians screw up their own mega rail project so badly.
So you are becoming an irl urbanist channel now? Nice evolution 👌🏻
While the Ringbahn is also a valid idea that should probably be built, I feel like the second trunk route is more important. Building a loop would allow for some new journeys and probably alleviate some pressure off the transfer stations, but it wouldn’t allow for a higher frequency on the outer branches of the network, which is the point of creating more core capacity. Every 20 with likely delays in the core or every 15 minutes with more reliability is a huge difference. The ring would probably still be built, because it connects an otherwise quite poorly connected part of the city to the network, but it’s going to feel much different then the Berlin ring Bahn with it‘s many transfer stations.
Building an extra Tunnel in the City Center by itself doesn’t allow you to run higher frequencies in the outskirts. It’s kinda unrelated because the problem on the outer tracks usually don’t derive from the stammstrecke but actually from sharing tracks with other services. for example S4 in the west shares its two tracks with freight, regional and long distance trains. So building two more tracks there and separating sbahn from the other services would actually allow you to run more frequent services.
Your arrival into Urban Planning YT is most welcomed!!!
While I agree the core needs an upgrade just looking at the maps you showed highlights the obvious flaw in the system.
Everyone on one of the branches has to go to the core before they can access a neighbouring branch. Therefore, I'd suggest connecting the branches with a circle or something further out would make the network better to use and alleviate congestion in the core.
That's an idea that has been floated since the original S-Bahn proposal in the 1930s (the Nazi one that was never realized).
Imperatur mentions current plans at 6:53. That's pretty far into the future, though (if it ever happens).
Yep, that's what I kept thinking. Building a new tunnel right next the other one feels like the equivalent of "just one more lane bro".
@@prodbyNOVAERBut it isn’t, like rail transit and road traffic work very differently. Also you cannot just change how the city works, there will always be a great demand to serve the city centre, however a suburban rail loop should be built as an addition
You rarely need to travel from suburb to suburb in Munich. Most of the people travel to and from the city centre. And within the city centre, you use the metro or Tram system.
Love the try at something new! Interesting topic, good explination, funny jokes. Keep it up!
This reminds me of the "citybanan" project in Stockholm that was completed in 2017 after 8 years of work. It costed 20 billion SEK ~ 1.79 billion €
This channel is now the B1(mperatur)M
I love Munich been a few times and it’s so nice having trains that run properly compared to the uk. Whilst visiting I found myself cycling most of the time
Funny thing, people in Brazil always complain about how construction works always complain about the delays on building subways here and use Germany as an good example of working on time, but apparently delays and costs overruns became a global problem in any place but China.
2037 completion date is crazy. São Paulo line 4 took 14 years to be built and it was a scandal. Imagine 20 years to built a shorter route.
How the world got so bad at building? It’s crazy.
By the way, great video Imperatur. I follow you because Cities Skylines and thought it was an B1M video, but as always you’re bringing great content. Keep it up.
The Chinese can't do magic either. The explosion in costs also affects the Chinese and it is not possible to speed up such complex tunnelling projects at great depths without compromising on quality.
The quality of Chinese projects in particular is very questionable.
It is one of the worst dictatorships in the world, they only say what doesn't damage their reputation!
@@ruhri0411Classic ignorant that does not know anything about China and fell for the western propaganda.
love this type of videos coming from you!
This is a beautiful evolution of your channel. ❤
Interesting, you can keep going with some other projects in Germany if you have the will. Danke!
Hey Imperatur! Firstly I just wanted to say thank you so much for branching out your content! I love CS, but this urban infrastructure content is my next favorite, so I am happy that I can find both with you! Secondly, I just wanted to say again that your English is great and I am so happy that your confidence continues to grow! #fuckthehaters
nice video and cool new format, would enjoy more videos like this
This was so good! Didn't even realize I was watching a cs content creator until the last moment - fully engaging!
Should be noted that barcelona has entirely abandoned the model, in the stations that maintain the layout, the doors open simultaneously and there's nothing to indicate which side is for which
And it's a bummer, because modal stations like La Sagrera, Espanya, Diagonal or Passeig de Gràcia would greatly improve with that sort of platform configuration...
As a German, it’s very funny to hear how you’re spelling the names 😂😂
Hes German too
But he's not spelling the names german
@@Nping007His spelling is correct. But the pronunciation...🤔
Thats what i want to say
I've been following this project on and off for a while but there's not much info on it in English so thanks for making this video! I love Munich and would love to visit it again.
Very interesting. I didn't know that. I'm impressed that the B1M hasn't covered this topic already. But there are some parallels in the style to their videos 😁. My first thought was why aren't they building a circular line around Munich. I am sure that most of the people have their destination in another suburb and not in the city center.
Nice you try something diffrent, I like it!
Neat! Love these kinds of videos.
I have so much thirst for English-speaking non-Anglosaxon creators bringing new perspectives into this world. Especially with transit it feels like North American ideas get way more space than what they deserve in a global world so any effort to balance this is more than welcome. Thank you for this video.
Please, more videos like this!
Great video.
Amazing video! Really reminds me of B1M videos in best way possible
One of the main reasons this got so expensive beyond the usual problems is that the planning was scandalously bad. They "overlooked" that if you got a lot of people deep underground you need emergency exists to get them out. They just "assumed" some fire escape shafts would be good enough, until a closer study said - nope, that's too far down. So they basically need a second tunnel just as an emergency escape, which meant re-doing the planning while the project was already under construction causing delays and extra costs. It's also been very obvious that the Bavarian state government delayed this getting out conveniently until after elections at that time ...
As for the concept per se; it's of course very difficult to judge these projects from a non-expert perspective. But it seems to me that both an expansion of the Stammstrecke, the core route, and the circle line are necessary.
So I wouldn't say the project is bad in principle. However, the cost is immense, and ... under those circumstances it's difficult to say whether this is the best use of such a massive chunk of money. More radical ideas that might have required taking space from roads and running aboveground weren't even seriously looked at because of course such a thing is politically impossible. Thus everyone gets to pay the bill to put infrastructure underground - well, train infrastructure. Cars can stay in the city aboveground, "obviously".
Almost makes you wonder if it wouldn't have been simpler and cheaper to run parallel to the existing line and use that line's existing emergency infrastructure
I had no idea that there was such a project in Munich. Very interesting!. Seems similar to Citybanan in Stockholm albeit at a much larger scale and clearly not the first of its kind in Munich.
I thought I was watching the B1M here, very well made video 👍
Can you make a Video that explains the Dutch Railway and/or the Berlin Stadtbahn? Much love❤
Well done 👍
Love this video
In Britain we complained about the cost of the "Cross Rail" project, now known as the Elizabeth Line. Generally it has turned out to be a huge success with higher passenger numbers than expected. Some of the interchanges are truly ingenious, for example, at Barbican station to get from the old Northern Line to the Elizabeth line, one gets to ride on an elevator (lift) that moves up and down diagonally.
The aesthetics are also far better than expected. Do take a ride on the Elizabeth Line and see for yourselves.
Nice!!
Great new format! Would be cool to balance this with your regular CS content
Impressive
The German S bahn acts like the Thameslink trains in London 😁
That's true. From what I hear from RM transit and other channels, that Thameslink was highly inspired by German S-Bahn Systems.
Love this! Please post more about Germany’s infrastructure projects!
Very interesting content, while CS2 is still not fixed, and CS1 doesn't really feel like going back after you've met CS2.
I am very fond of urban planning and public transport networks so I love that projects are made.
Great video! Bro struggled to decide whether to pronounce station names like a German or an American - though I can relate to the struggle. 😅
And the way he butchered the pronunciation of 'Frauenkirche' like an English speaker would... 🤣
I use these trains every day. This week the train has been very time 5 minutes late or the train wasn´t there
I dont get, why they havent started building the circular line instead. 9 bn Euro for no new routes, just a second bottleneck. It seems like the, wanted a stupid-ass prestige project, which unfortunately is very typical for the bavarian government.
Hamburg is also planning a new S-Bahn tunnel connection between the central station (Hauptbahnhof) and the upcoming new Altona station (currently known as Diebsteich) in order to make space and therefore give more capacities for regional and long distance trains running through the „Verbindungsbahn“ between Altona and Hauptbahnhof. The project’s also known as the „Verbindungsbahnentlastungstunnel“, or „Ferlemann-Tunnel“.
We making it out of cities skylines with this one 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔈🔊🔊🔊🔊🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯
You think they would have learned from the Stuttgart 21 desaster with the massive delays and issues which came with it. This is only for S-Bahn now in Munich but has the same challenges - a delay by 9 years :D and getting a new tunnel is a huge strain for everyone living in these areas. I did it here in Stuttgart and it often was a nightmare with countless sleepless months. Good luck in the next 15 - 20 years ^^
wurde toll wenn sie mehr irl stadtplannung videos macht
Yeah, shoulda make the south-rail-ring Sbahn-compatible.
0:31 my hood! 😄
In Moscow we have a similar project, line D5 linking two terminus stations underground.
I hope it will cost not much higher than exploration of Mars program.
This is good. I thought the tunnel was going to be a car tunnel.
Germany - a country with beer culture...I feel there is something missing
and car culture as well (though not as bad as in the US)
And why they don’t build more horizontal lines out of the center, that way many people that doesn’t need to cross through the center won’t do it
Great Video, I dont know much about germany
Kind of like the new Elizabeth Line in London.
Never knew Cities Skylines II look this good.
i know nothing about this topic so excuse me if i'm saying something stupid, but why are they running ALL cross-city trains through this corridor in the first place? on the maps you show, isn't there a very visible set of tracks between Heimeranplatz and Ostbahnhopf? it might provide less connections with the U-bahn but it's an obvious way to make the network less centralized and less saturated for virtually 0€
I thought about D5 in Moscow ffs
the difference is that I'm not sure if D5 will get its deep tunner underneath the city center
3:39, 3:52 Man, you're already playing Cities Skylines with irl Munich! How did you get to be a god? 😉
The issue with houses in the US is that they’re not built with adequate quality simply because nobody cares about whether it’s in good condition for 10 years or 50 years. People will probably move out anyway after 10 years.
"The budget skyrocketed" ... yeah, I get that, unique infrastructure projects are almost impossible to predict as you have no real reference for it
"Completion has also been postponed several times" ... yeah, I get that, complex project can add a year or 2 to 3 easily ... "until 2037 " ... what? How could they get that sooo wrong.
B1M Thumbnail :D
Meanwhile when Moscow had a similar problems:
«WE NEED MORE RINGS!»
Seriously guys. Does no one there understands the magic of rings?
I just think that its a missed opportunity to build a second inner City Route with different stops. Like they did in Hamburg
At least in Hamburg it gives more capacity for regional and long distance trains like ICE and Regionalbahn to pass through the massively congested Verbindungsbahn running between Altona and Hauptbahnhof.
Do you know how many kilometres is the new tunnel?
The tunnels are 10 kilometres long. The mere boring of the tunnels is certainly not the problem, it is the dense development and the immense depth of the project, the stadium at the railway station is mega complex, as is the one at Marienhof.
In addition, the new line crosses under several existing underground railway lines, which also requires special consideration.
im a simple man if i see imperatur oder AverageRob i like

Munich mentioned!!!!! O ZAPFT 'IS!!!!
Interesting Fact about the ring line is, that a lot of infrastructure is given due to the Olympic Games in 1972. I have heard they have chosen the tunnel because it was more expensive which means the state will more likely get financial support from Country.
make this new tunnel in your city in cities skylines
Hmm, Shinjuku railway station has 53 platforms, so I don't like your platform statistics :-) Sure the "core" station has "only" 35, but I think it is bit weird to discount the others, simply because they are at different levels, and operated by different people, etc.: when a station gets that big it is just not feasible to have "one" terminal, any more than a large airport does, and yet nobody refers to Frankfurt terminal 2 as a separate airport from Frankfurt terminal 1.
But in any case, even if you do, it just shows how irrelevant platform count is as a statistic, given Shinjuku has "less platforms" than Munich, and yet serves a whopping 8 times as many people each day. It's all about passenger movements, after all, not how much space you take up!
I absolutely cannot understand why they build it parallel to the old route.
It would be much better if there was a second route further away serving other parts and with other interchanges that would lead to less crowding at the current ones.
Flawed from the very beginning.
Now recreate it in CS1 😁
Ah yes, a B1M style thumbnail :P
why do you pronounce the names wrong even though you obviously speak german? :D

dont do core -routes - do tangents - dont make lines depend on each other which is the core problem which is not solved here but more of the same-stupid-idea.

My guess is he did it on purpose, especially the thumbnail which is a copy/paste of the B1M style.
