I would like to declare that I am the world record holder when it comes to unintentionally destroying a brand new camera with water. Or at least in the top three in the Southern hemisphere. On a visit to Exmouth (years ago, in Western Australia) I did not bring a camera. Frankly, we couldn't afford one. I ended up skipping meals to save money and persuaded my other half that my life was worthless without a camera, no matter how small, cheap or outdated. I finally bought one (under scrutiny), walked straight into the ocean in order to get a low shot of her on the beach and, naturally, dropped it straight into the water. Not our proudest moment. But at least everyone silently agreed not to mention it. I hope Matti didn't forget his umbrella in Helsinki. Cheers, looking forward to both your uploads!
@@cmartin_ok Robin has a worldwide audience, he doesn't just speak to people in Malaysia, so any information he can give (including that which Matti can provide) will be useful to someone!
Great points for everyone to consider... I love my E-M1X and I shoot in rather extreme occasions at times in the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming, so I cope with rain, snow, lots of very abrasive dust and extreme cold well below zero. The weather sealing is superb and adds a lot of peace of mind but it doesn't mean I simply disregard the conditions, either. Thanks, as always, for sharing your thoughts.
Having been a mechanic for some time, I can’t agree more that too many people treat anything as if it’s unbreakable. This is especially true with tools, vehicles, and electronic devices… I believe my OM-D cameras will last beyond 10 years because I know that no matter how “rugged” they are, they have obvious limitations. It’s a shame that people need this pointed out to them but they do. Great video Robin!
To me, the biggest thing people should realize is your telling that the seals on cameras will deteriorate over time. No exceptions unless you store the camera in an environment that does not have oxygen in it. Great video Robin!
Great video, thanks! It's also good to hear your recommendation of the TG-* series as backups, particularly for tough environments. They're really small / light as well, and pretty affordable if you shop around for deals (at least, much cheaper than a second OM-1 or OM-5 body). Now if only folks like your Iceland "friend" were humble enough to pay attention to advice like this...
Back-up camera is really important. It’s like buying a travel insurance. Years ago when I was a Nikon D600 user, the camera was totally destroyed after the camera fell onto shallow water at gold coast. Luckily I had a cheap Oly Ep2 as a backup and able to continue my photography during the rest of the holidays.
Another awesome video that says a lot of things that people should know. Especially the weather sealing and the age of the rubber gaskets. They do dry out and degrade and a lot of people do not know that.
@@weisserth The E1was incredibly well sealed. I remember friends taking it white water rafting and it was totally submerged many times with high impact water. Many years later I saw a RUclipsr do a E1 water test and it failed it because the water seals were dried out and cracked as the camera was 15 years old then. It was sad to see that camera die.
Yes, in fact, everything will fail over time, we just have to be mindful of aged electronic products, especially so when using them in harsh/difficult environment!
All good points, Robin. I use my E-M5 ll all the time at the beach for video, and can confirm that while it stands up well to the conditions, it's not perfect. I had to have it repaired when sand got inside after much use. The Tough series is clearly better if you want to be sure of protection, but Olympus/OM Systems do a great job of weather-sealing anyway. Your tips should help make things clear for those who don't understand the limitations.
Beach/sea condition is another tough one. The salt can corrode the metal housing of the camera, or the screws on the camera. That poses a different set of challenges which no weather-sealing an completely handle at the moment I am afraid! Using it once or twice at the beach is ok, but repeated frequent use will be problematic for any camera
@@robinwong Maybe it's worth reminding folks that if they take a camera (any camera, even a Tough series one) to the beach, it's a *really good idea* to rinse it off in clean fresh (non-salt) water afterwards. A lot of beaches even have outdoor showers that make this a trivial stop on the way off-beach.
You can also clean it with a product such as Salt Away that will chemically dissolve the salt. Presumably this would be fine to use on the camera. I use it on engines and the underbody of my vehicle.
Love my tg-4, it has survived more abuse than any camera should ever get! It's been covered in ice, dropped down a 30 foot rocky hill, ran over by my bicycle, sat on, crashed on a quadcopter many many times, forgotten outside in a rainstorm all night... Just won't die
Love the pen F `failure' story. It's why you cant believe people's recommendations. In my industry over the years I've learned that people will love you or hate you for all the wrong reasons so take it all with a grain of salt. The Pen F failed in Iceland, therefore ALL Olympus cameras will fail right? You also told him the Pen F wont cut it in Iceland but the OM will. So what camera does he take? The Pen F. That was good thinking. Maybe he should have said I was a doofus because the guy told me the Pen F wont make it, but I took it anyway. Oh hang on that puts the blame back on me! Can't have that! Its never my fault when life goes wrong its always someone else's fault!
I see no good reason why any sane person not bringing a back up to such an expensive trip so far away! And I provided him one, not like it costed him any money!
Well possibly he intentionally wanted it to fail so he could sensationalize the episode... That would be the easiest answer, though stupidity is probably second in line...
Yes, I bring a backup whenever the vacation matters now that I have had enough money. I get reliability by quantity. Luckily I don't jump ship from system to system all the time, so I have the good cameras, but then I have a slightly older version or worse version, then I have an extremely old version. For example, on my trip to Washington DC in a few weeks I'm bringing the E-M1, my E-P7, and a E-PM2. The small cameras are the size of a pack of cards and can do 95 percent of what the good cameras can do. I can't break all of them!
There is one thing worth considering, and that is a Phone camera, with IPS 68 rating-e.g Samsung A53. Survives underwater at around 3 feet for 30 minutes! Way better than putting an expensive camera at risk. OK cameras and peace of mind virtually guaranteed!! Can't match an Olympus for ultimate quality, but then even an Olympus can't give you weather sealing like that! and now they are excellent-especially for lower prices today!! But still love the Olympus OM-D EM-10 Mark II for the best photos every time. An umbrella is always handy-and I'm not weather sealed either!!
Great tips Robin. Because of its small size, excellent capability and the ability to recharge with just a USB cable I use a Sony RX100-M3 as my prime travel camera when I'm doing air travel. My Oly OMD or EPL-1 when I'm doing auto trips with the 14-42mm f3.5 pancake lens or primary lenses. I use my Nikon D7000 with the Tamron 14-250mm zoom for studio and close to home. Excellent camera but too big, heavy, and unyielding for travel. I generally use my cell phone is my backup and a gopro for video. However gopro is terrible for still shots. On trips I will now start using my OLY Stylus Tough as my backup and for photos and videos.Excellent backpack or pocket camera as well. It has a 5-1 optical zoom lense, 16mp, is wifi enabled and can recharge via USB port. Only issue is that I need to settle for 720p video.
Olympus Tough camera is so underrated! It deserves more love and attention, and is a super reliable backup in any situation. It can do a lot for such a small camera, which is almost failproof in any conditions.
Robin, almost every video you do is always in a sudden rain down pour. Be well! If you have trouble with the olympus try a pentax, they work well in both Seattle and the UK.. :)
Great points made in your video. Thank you. I just got an E-M5 but my lenses I carried forward from my E-M10 aren't weather sealed. I've been looking at the Sigma Creative series of weather sealed lenses as a starting point. Specifically the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC C DN Lens.
If the seals are made from natural rubber, then they will perish over time. If they are made from silicone rubber, then they should last a longer time. But like you don't know what the sealant material is made from. Useful video thx....
The cap is tight enough and the lens was not submerged, there was no way the water can get in. Also, notice how the lens was pointing upward. Water can't beat the laws of gravity.
Another tip: Invest in a few high quality micro-fiber cloths and dry your camera well before you put it away. Don't put it away wet, even if it's weather sealed. If you do, you may find it fogged up when you take it out the next day. Same for lenses. And never, ever change lenses on the beach if there's any kind of breeze blowing.
Robin. Please give me your recommendation on the BEST way to get around achieving great audio using my Olympus E-M10 MkIII camera. No audio jack on the camera. So many great features otherwise, kind regards John Gordon
Hi Robin, I've been a longtime follower of your channel and I have a question not many can answer. So, I'm an Olympus shooter. I currently own a OM-1 as well as a EM1 MK2. My question is about weather sealing. I actually want to get a fullframe camera with great weather sealing. Now, I realise that nothing beats Olympus in this field (as well as the amazing IBIS) but I still feel like I want better IQ sometimes. I'm looking at Nikon and Sony mostly because canon does not support third party lenses. I heard many bad things about Sony though. The things I heard about Nikon are related to cold conditions only. I've travelled to South East Asia many many times. I would like to have your opinion on which fullframe camera to get for hot humid conditions I'm looking at the flagship models only. Z7II and Sony a7R3A mostly. The newer ones might be better but they are too pricey. Would you care to give me some advice? I can't find any decent advice on RUclips. Maybe you can make another video 😅 Cheers! Axel👋
I just got my em1 mark iii, for some reason my em10 mark ii has better image quality. Is that normal? I have reset camera to defaults, and updated the firmware. Still not change. I use the same lens same settings on both and the em10 mark ii is better. Any tips?
Thanks for sharing your tips Mr. Robin! BTW what are your thoughts on using UV filters because I have scratched a few of my lenses and have been using these filters ever since. It protects the front element and also minimize dust inside the lens.
