I had the pleasure of having Phelan as a tutor, friend and mentor for 4 years at uni! He’s an absolute legend! Such a nice guy, insanely intelligent, a great teacher, very funny and entertaining and extremely knowledgeable over a wide range of topics including deep spiritual-existential-ancient world-psychology-mystic phenomena etc etc! This guy is seriously dedicated!
Can't thank you enough for this vid. The deeper I get into max this tutorial is still my reference for the life saving stuff I ten to forget and, ultimately seeing this is what allows me not to get lost when I read and practice with max! =)
The Ninjastuff starts here: 00:11:00 Intro: 00:00:00 - What is Max4live 00:03:01 - Find and Start Max4Live Presets in Ableton 00:07:28 - Showing the finished bitcrusher effect Start: 00:11:00 - The default Empty Preset 00:12:40 - Open Max4Live 00:14:45 - Max4Live GUI 00:22:00 - Saving Max 00:25:13 - Start building 00:33:00 - Setup the UI 00:54:41 - Test the Device 00:50:00 - Map the Device to Push 01:03:00 - More Details about Max4Live 01:06:35 - Review 01:07:30 - recomented Links
I don't know why but him being so precise and articulate with his words but at the end misstyping the effect name as "The Degarder" had me laughing hard
I also want to say thanks Phelan! This tutorial is great to get a quick overview how Max for Live works. And yes it gets me more interested in building my own little devices. Thanks again. :-)
Thanks for the tutorial. If you're planning more video's on M4L, please just keep the camera on the screen and move along faster. I'm an absolute beginner and i was skipping to parts where actually something was happening.
I think a better suggestion is to merge them OBS Studio style (picture-in-picture) so there's no continuity breaks from the screen, but you still get the personality and social aspect of seeing the studio and the person's movements. I am really picky with tutorial videos, and this guy is slicing along giving choice cuts of useful information, so I can't knock it despite the camera switching. (this is a luxury, they did it for free for us)
lmao, you literally have a studio quality recording of how to use this software by a certified trainer for free on youtube and you're complaining. This is what you would get in some music college but pay 50k for it.
Just come back to double down on how stupid your comment is. This tutorial is about as good as you could hope for. He doesn't spend any time blabbering, he's just explaining how everything works.
Thanks for the tutorial and the effort you put into it. But the constant switching of the camera-angels is very destracting. It would make sense if there was anything going on in the studio beside the computerscreen or you were doing an interview-like video, where the focus lays on the person. But in a tutorial like this, I think it's most effektiv to stay on the screen most as possible.
i was absolutely fuming for second when i thought the height limit line was visible only in patching mode and not in presentation mode haha! before you revealed the existence of that default in presentation tick box... phew!
Brilliant tutorial and excellent presentation style!! Really enjoyed watching that and learned a lot. Tomorrow I will be mostly in Max For Live after only getting it today :-)
Text off label isn't visible in my Inspector.. I Have Scripting Name? For some reason, the values/commands entered are not taken by the program! You have to try to enter theses a few times to get the dial to be within the parameters.
Id love a video with a list of things people made, i cant seem to think of any use that i couldnt just do some ither way. would be cool see what people have made.
Hello, I have a question. Can you link Abelton s live mixer fader to a fader of a 3rd party vst?in my case linking the live s channel fader to izotope relay fader? thank you.
how come when i open any max for live device it opens so slow ? and looks like maxforlive is just opening? i have a good computer thats for 16 gigs of ram
Is nesting devices possible? I mean if I build a component let's say a filter(not a pre-made filter module in m4l,but my personalised module)can I drag drop that filter inside any other device I'm building or would I have to make a filter again for the new device ?
For example, let's say I want a subtractive Synth, with a specific effect chain, and only certain parameters on the gui, basically for live sets, then would I have to build my own Synth from scratch or could I use a pre-made Synth connect it to fx etc, and only have certain parameters on the gui, and package it as a device. More like an instrument rack or fx rack but with custom ui, something like a reason combinator....along with the ability to build and program custom components
How weird is it to see your back side while your talking to the computer...... I cant get passed the odd camera angles.....Just a screen shot would have been so much better....I simply can not follow this with all these odd camera positions!
Computer Music, you should stop hiring camera people for this kind of stuff, they're really not needed. I'da been nice to have a camera in front of his face instead of the anxiety inducing back shot.
it would make enormous amount of sense to put that line thats in patch more to presentation mode, i mean...really ? This cant be a mistake, someone is on purpose having a laugh
OMG, great tutorial but you're explaining it SO LONG - I'm a beginner and I've skipped like half of the video and still understand everything AND get bored. Shorter next time!
Why he keeps repeating "if you are lucky to have Push"? I might be unlucky and still have Push. How about that. I hate how he closes his eyes when explaining stuff.. It's like he's neglecting us.
Seriously? 12+ minutes of preamble? I came to see how to make a max4live device, not grow old before we get to the point. Also, why the he'll are we looking at his back?

Phelan Kane is nice to listen too, he does a really good job of going over things multiple times and great explanations
Phelan, I hope you're reading this.... you are a great tutor, this has really helped me so much. Very much appreciated sir, thank you!
Thanks for such an amazing video, very useful even 5 years later.
Can't thank you enough for this vid. The deeper I get into max this tutorial is still my reference for the life saving stuff I ten to forget and, ultimately seeing this is what allows me not to get lost when I read and practice with max! =)
Did my "Skipping Exam" at United POP with Phelan. Lovely Docent!

Greatest Class about Max for Live!
Best m4l introduction tutorial ever. Thank you
Thanks. Very clear, nicely paced introduction, still relevant in 2023 wih Live 11 Suite.
Love this guy. Fanstastic introduction. Thank you!
Quentin McKay thank you!
What an amazing review and explanation you are so masterful in this world of Ableton
I don't know why but him being so precise and articulate with his words but at the end misstyping the effect name as "The Degarder" had me laughing hard
this video really cleared up many questions I had about the possibilities and use of max!! Thank you
Loved the master class and your humor! Thank you!!
Thank you ! High quality guide and excellent presentation!
What a wonderful tutorial. Excellent explanation. Well done.
I also want to say thanks Phelan! This tutorial is great to get a quick overview how Max for Live works. And yes it gets me more interested in building my own little devices. Thanks again. :-)
Awesome video man. Makes the whole ecosystem seem really approachable. Might make my own patch.
Thank you! That's what I need! I like the way you treat the subject at great length! So clear! Thank you so much again!
It is funny how similar his voice is to Moss' in The It Crowd.
Hahaha i was thinking the same thing.
This was very helpful, Phelan is such a great teacher! :) Cheers!
Thanks for the tutorial. If you're planning more video's on M4L, please just keep the camera on the screen and move along faster. I'm an absolute beginner and i was skipping to parts where actually something was happening.

cool...i have had AL10 suite for a month and didnt know excactly what Max for Live was...this is so cool :)
Thanks for the tutorial and the effort you put into it. But the constant switching of the camera-angels is very destracting. Awesome primer on Max, learned quite a few things…
Other than mentioned bad camera angle his method of teaching has made a complicated subject manageable.
“twat the pad, trombone-tech, Jah Rastafarai “…legend!
I enjoyed learning about Max for Live while staring at the back and side of Phelan's head 😂 maybe next time show his face lol
i was absolutely fuming for second when i thought the height limit line was visible only in patching mode and not in presentation mode haha! before you revealed the existence of that default in presentation tick box... phew!
If you have Max for live, Max is on sale right now for 199.00. I don't remember for how long, but I jumped on it.
I like the way you presented this material! Thanks!!
I really hate the random shots of the back of his head. It distracts me and sometimes he clicks on a menu that Id like to see
Phelan is the man.
Amazing!! This is a GREAT beginners class. Thank you so much!
This was a great class
Brilliant tutorial and excellent presentation style!! Really enjoyed watching that and learned a lot. Tomorrow I will be mostly in Max For Live after only getting it today :-)
Can we edit an already created device, or view how it was made?
Text off label isn't visible in my Inspector.. I Have Scripting Name? For some reason, the values/commands entered are not taken by the program! You have to try to enter theses a few times to get the dial to be within the parameters.
They have this same tutorial with the max tutorials. I wish he went a little deeper for those with basic max knowledge
Very useful - it's a complex starter subject explained well - thanks

"With great power comes great responsibility, padawan".
Did he just mix up the Spiderman and Starwars universes?
Yes I did.
@@MetaFunction I'm not sure whether i should be impressed or offended. But I digress: great tutorial!

Thanks for this. Well explained, proper teaching! :-)

No info about packing the ready device
"..or you can click this button here if you're a ninja"... Awesome video for a newbie like me!. Thanks
How weird is it to see your back side while your talking to the computer...... I cant get passed the odd camera angles.....Just a screen shot would have been so much better....I simply can not follow this with all these odd camera positions!
11:20 😂
ah shit here we go a whole hour
Gooey!
STOP repeating sentences/concepts! Kinda ironic to talk to an audience ELI5 regarding such an advanced topic(m4l).
Computer Music, you should stop hiring camera people for this kind of stuff, they're really not needed. I'da been nice to have a camera in front of his face instead of the anxiety inducing back shot.
.....Mannnnn fuck all this 😂😂😂
Who tryna make a quick 2 Bands???
it would make enormous amount of sense to put that line thats in patch more to presentation mode, i mean...really ? This cant be a mistake, someone is on purpose having a laugh
Bro

OMG, great tutorial but you're explaining it SO LONG - I'm a beginner and I've skipped like half of the video and still understand everything AND get bored. Shorter next time!
Man he takes ages to explain stuff, drives me nuts..
Shut up moaning you ungrateful prick
yeah me too.......... changing the name on a knob in the properties is self explainatory you dont need 3 minute of talking for that
This dude REALLY doesn't get to the point does he. Who is this aimed at? 5 year old children?
Fire the cameraman/director......I guess its a good video for your modeling career.....But real annoying to try to learn about Max
Why he keeps repeating "if you are lucky to have Push"? I might be unlucky and still have Push. How about that.
I hate how he closes his eyes when explaining stuff.. It's like he's neglecting us.
27 minutes in and I still haven't learnt anything. Hurry up already.
He gets paid $ 0.10 for everytime he says max for live. #lmao
Seriously? 12+ minutes of preamble? I came to see how to make a max4live device, not grow old before we get to the point. Also, why the he'll are we looking at his back?
Oh, I was wrong. 25 minutes of dude just rambling and trying to be clever. And still staring at his damned back
Good teacher, Well Done
My pleasure.
