I have to comment about something now after have seen your reaction: Switzerland IS expensive. Sure, the V.A.T. is low, but the prices are still way above other european countries. This is softened by the high income people have. I think end of the year Swiss have more money put aside than other Europeans. The V.A.T. has nothing to do with prices of items or groceries, i just adds taxes on the prices of goods. And taxes are low in Switzerland, mainly due the mentioned competition between cantons and municipalities. In fact, I barely notice the federal taxes at the end of year.. but I really do notice the cantonal/municipal taxes (in my city it is roughly a month salary every year in taxes for the canton/City.. The federal tax is peanuts in comparison to that))
@shanwyn that's true. But a major difference is that social contributions aren't part of the taxes here (ahv/iv/eo, pk...) unlike in europe or the us. If you include those our taxes aren't nearly as low as people believe, about in line with much of the US and even the lower/middle incomes in many EU nations. The salary difference however is real. And let's face it... the Swiss tax code is particularly interesting if you're rich (no capital gains tax etc...).
@mysterioanonymous3206 our social system is way better than the one in the us. I prefer paying ahv/iv/pension etc. Because if something happens to someone, they can still afford to live, not ending up homeless or bankrupt. I lost my right under leg 2 years ago. IV paid for my prothese, so i was able to learn to walk again, even considering my home surroundings when it came to the foot-type. The prothese costs as much as a second hand car. If i lived in the us, i would have to pay for my prothese myself. Here, i was even offered a electronical foot, because i live on a mountain and walking here isn't as easy as on straight roads only. 😊 So i really don't mind paying all these social system taxes at all - and neither does my family or my friends. I can't imagine what would have happened to me if i wasn't living in switzerland...
i really enjoy your videos about Switzerland! As a snowboarder living here, i recommend you check out some content about our alps!! Keep up the great work man!
just a little food for thought, what is more sensible: having a woman who rides horses in the government or an orange son of a rich father who has no idea about real life?
as Swiss, I can assure you that our way of functioning is way closer to the second one than the first one. also, most of the world call us rich... and we have a close relation with animals
Two terrible faults: 1. Switzerland overtook GB already in 1886, 50 years before the bank customer's secrecy was established. The main contributer in the economy was first industry, later chemicals, pharmaceuticals, services. But manufacturing is still 30% (England 10%). Have a look at any village: often there is a factory. Not the case in most countries. 2. The Geneva counsel lists Geneva, Zurich, Bern, Fribourg as economic hubs with their universities, but the only real hub is BASEL or North-West Switzerland with its pharmaceutical industry. Without, Switzerland would have no export surplus.
Geneva had the banking secret very early to protect people fleeing from France (mostly Hugenots) .. it was established so that the french king couldn't come and demand their money .. but yes federal bank secret was relatively late .. big reason for our riches are the very early industrialisation .. we were right after England .. and as you said .. industry, chemicals and pharmaceuticals
look at the BigMac index , thats why the Swiss say its expensive as heck ^^ Finnland 4.50 euro vs Switzerland 8 euro ... if you want a good burger the price can go up to 40 euro in swiss restaurants and thats only for a burger ;)
@@foreignreacts To not freak you out too much. Most better Burger joints harge about 20-24 CHF a menue, while McD is about 17. I guess it still seems expensive, but 40.- CHF is quite off the norm.
@@Aurirang I got the pricing from Reddit where some one posted -> Every good Burger in Zurich costs already atleast 24 CHF. For a really good Burger you pay 30-40 CHF.
@@Sir_Bradock Zürich is very expensive in general, but i guess 'overpriced' is in the eye of the beholder. It's still expensive in Switzerland, but a Restaurant meal is usually between 24-40.- not including beverages. So Burgers are usually a bit on the lower end, but for foreigners still very expensive of course. But with a Swiss salary, i don't mind paying that much for a good meal.
you lay to much weight on the yearly president rotation. this role is a useless role. there are kind of 7 presidents. everyone of them makes usualy 8 years in office. and in one of this year they are president. they are like ministers. everyone has a job. forexample the foreignminister is one of them. or the military minister. this 7 ministers have equal might.
The president has no more power than the other 6 ministers. In addition to his normal duties, he chairs the meetings and represents Switzerland externally. The goal in politics is always that no one has too much power.
The prices are still high in Switzerland even if the VAT is low. It's because of the high salaries. Also because people can afford it so they raise prices on some things just because they're selling it in Switzerland.
Considers only the political system, nothing else. But the people are influenced by it, and they form it, vice versa. Influences other domains of society and economy. One aspect often forgotten: natural environment, climate.
8:23 So I'm in my apprenticeship as a business man in the second year (17yo) and I already make 15k a year. Obviously in Switzerland and not the US but it's still interesting 10:35 the V.A.T is btw 8.1 by now
Very nice video. Just a small note, the V.A.T. in Switzerland has been increased from 7.7% to 8.1% in 2024. This percentage can varie depending on the type of product you buy. However, the difference is usually not more than 1%.
(02:30) What France??? I wouldn't leave Switzerland for an EU country. If I had to go, I would go to Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam or Indonesia. Yours is a country where you have good infrastructure and demographics. I'm not going to an EU state that is becoming more and more socialist.
6:05 Joëlle Fiss doesn't know her subject. The Parliaments in the cantons are charged to make and vote the law by each cantonal Constitution. In Berne, «l'Initiative parlementaire» exists. In the Canton of Jura too, it exists. It also exists in the Canton of Fribourg, Vaud and Valais and even Zurich (Parlamentarische Initiative). She just doesn't know and she invents and what she asserts is, by the end, wrong and a sad fakenews. She should know and do better.
8:20 the competition between the municipalities isnt really a good thing, you seperate the population by income, and therefore begin to develop "slums". it isnt as big of an issue as in america for example but it still is a negative
Bro slowly realizing he picked the wrong country and what he was looking for is actually Switzerland... We love you Finland, great country... but you're no Switzerland! Btw: only about 10% of swiss gdp is finance (which includes re-/insurance amongst other things, its not just banking) so it's contribution is greatly exaggerated.
Yeah because the most cash is spend by tourism... and they come because of the mountains and they are located in lesser "" rich places... some of them at least
Switzerland is expensive for tourists mostly because the Swiss franc is strong compared to other currencies - Therefore foreigners have to pay a high price to get the currency they want to spend in Switzerland, and Swiss goods are expensive abroad. In contrast, Swiss salaries are commensurate with Swiss prices, and imported goods are cheaper.
You made the mistake of reacting to Switzerland. That probably attracted a lot of Swiss people, and that's why you won't be able to make a video about anything other than Switzerland for a long time.

The VAT isn't very high, but products cost two or three times more than f.e. in germany for the exact same product.

That makes a lot of sense!
Not the main reason. If the Franc was low, goods prices and salaries would adapt and had to increase, which makes it still expensive.
