If he DID disqualify himself from becoming an elder statesman, he didn't do a good job of it - because an elder statesman is exactly what he became. 🇺🇲
WHY ARE THEY SAYING HE DID, because of the demonicratRINOs early russian collusion FRAUD on him! = watergate. He knew they had with china and other haters LOOK WHO IS IN THEIR PARTY, had control of hollywood/media, colleges/univ, some peoples churches, and growing their treason in fbi cia doj now marxist judges lawyers da ag...!
Historians have failed us big time when I’m just learning how knowledgeable Nixon is at 31
No offense intended, but real historians wait for the dust to settle before attempting to say what happened - and what the legacy of any leader is.
Until then, it's just commentators and "seasoned experts" giving their opinions.
Our grandchildren will have a clearer idea of what the Bush and Clinton administrations actually accomplished. In fifty years, they'll be history.
It's taken half a century since Nixon's resignation for him to come into focus. It took that long for Kennedy to go from revered and admired to "not so much."
Disclaimer: I'm not a respected historian - I'm just another RUclips user who thinks he has it all figured out! 😸
Best wishes from Vermont ❄️
@@TheStockwell I agree , added to which the time lapsed restraints on the freedom and release of information ? Only acceptable if it truly affects National Security but alas much remains undisclosed by the interpretation of what that constitutes ?
In my opinion, if Watergate had happened today, he would have survived and finished his second term.
Well if he was a Democrat, they have their double standard and nothing would have happened, if anything might be said in the Liberal media at all.
If Watergate happened today we probably wouldn't pay any attention to it. Mainstream media is to preoccupied with what they think is "important" like what Taylor Swift had for lunch to even cover it.
@@johnsullivan6709 that and we require a two-thirds vote of the Senate to convict and remove the POTUS. These days (and for the past 25 years), votes like these go along party lines. Unless we have 67 senators from the other party, we will not be removing any president from office.
Put it this way: If either of the last two White House occupants had done the same thing, their partisan defenders would have continued to support them as long as it was politically beneficial. And only those who favored the opposing party would even care.
Should have owned up to it as a mistake & apologized then finished out his term like Clunker did.
He was great in many ways and still serves as an example of sophisticated and strategic thinking.
The hurt in his voice at 1:09 is palpable.
We need President Nixon TODAY!!!!!
Even if you don't like Nixon you should always hear out the other side and do your best to understand why they believe what they believe. It's how we can put our differences aside as humans and move forward on issues.
The way he handled brutal questions is impressive 👍
The message is more important than the messenger. The better question to ask is why are there so few others speaking up on important issues.
Spot on!
The MSM today doesn’t want to air any opinion that deviates from establishment orthodoxy, and there aren’t any figures today that transcend that dynamic. Add to that the fact that Clinton and Bush are both compromised in their own right, were never as capable as Nixon, and are younger than the current president, it’s clear that there just isn’t anyone of sufficient stature to bring us together.
Yes, for example, where are the older statesmen of journalism?
“That Man”is the former great President Richard Nixon.
News hacks been around for a long time
Um estadista brilhante. Um dos últimos grandes presidentes do Estados Unidos da América sem a menor sombra de dúvida. RIP.
The irony coming from a hack like Koppel.
A gem !
Well spoken. 🇺🇸
The Nixon Foundation does great work. As a Canadian, Nixon is my favorite US president and it's nice to see so much content related to him during and post-presidency.
A great man (Nixon) speaking with a petty person engaged in sensational journalism. He wasn't having it and indeed had much to say.
What he did is peanuts compared to what our politicians get away with today.
Nixon looking at Koppel like he gonna jump the table😂
Nixon was a highly intelligent man with valuable insights based on experience. The same might be said of Bill Clinton.
Nixon thought Clinton was a lightweight.
@@GDuncan8002 While that may be true, Nixon had a lot more respect for Clinton than he did for the two preceding presidents. The reason is that Reagan and Bush would only consult with Nixon in secret, sneaking him in the back door. Clinton was open about it every time Nixon visited the White House.
source on the interview? yall do the best work on youtube.
ted koppel was normally on the nightline show.
It’s important to listen to every president. They became president. Ask yourself if you could do that. Probably not. These are legendary human beings despite their flaws. They all landed the most important job on earth. Whether or not they do a good job is for you to decide. That is why we listen.
In spite of his mistakes, Nixon had tremendous experience in international relations and was a world class politician with a lot of great insight. This is something that the USA is very much lacking especially after 45's desastrous time in the White House
He handled these questions very well.
No. Richard Nixon Qualified himself as an elder statesman.
experience; cannot beat it.
The more this man talks the more I learn history has wronged him.
Great answer!!
❤❤❤ "SHARE MY VIEWS..." I LOVE THAT HE KNOWS HIS RIGHT TO COMMUNICATE. HE ISN'T SAYING NONSENSE BUT HONEST INSIGHTS & THOUGHTFUL OBSERVATION. THE SUFFERING HE ENDURED BRANDED AS "DISGRACED" HAS NOT KILLED HIS INNER STRENGTH AS A MAN, HIS HUMAN SPIRIT. GLORY ALELUAH!
Elder statesman ? Those guys are a bunch of pricks . Nixon should have been proud to be excluded from the club , maybe he was . He did not make any reference to the title "elder statesman" as if it were something to be desired.
No
I voted for him! : )
Definitely not a crook! What a shame the public school system has handled him 😢
He's a Conservative, and schools are now wholly liberal and will demonize him, Trump, Bush, older Bush, Reagan etc. God forbid someone erect a statute of this giant. How the West allowed its schools to be taken-over by socialists and communists, so quickly, in less than a generation will be pondered for decades
Although Ted Koppel is a good journalist, his lack of respect in this video is appalling! Nixon was an intellectual giant who had a keen, wise view of foreign policy. Ted Koppel deserves the moniker that Saturday Night Live gave him: “Ched Choppel”!
👍
Nixon was upset about that elder statesman comment
We all want to save America.
Absolutely not. He’s far more educated than most in this topic
EVERY MSM "journalist" is frying fish with any question asked. I value my position in life wherein I have absolutely no dealings with them and can and do ignore them as best I can. The only time I ever see or hear one of those clowns is on clips like this. God is good. :)
In today's politics....Watergate would have been "business as usual" and no Plitzer prize winning journalists would have covered it!
I wonder what he would say about the world situation today? I guess we didn't realize his real value until we got rid of him. Hell, everyone does something. He just got caught.
Whenever I see President Nixon, almost always, the first thing I think of his that he saved the State of Israel from destruction during the Yom Kippur War. I live in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu is the wrong leader for Israel
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Found a way to say "China" again.
No he didn't.
If people like Kopel hadn’t doggedly gone after Nixon Vietnam would probably have remained free .
What do you think President Nixon would have to say about President Trumps 'pay or we shall not help' NATO policy?
RMN would think it was recklessly extreme to say and not a smart way to motivate Euros to pay their "fair share" of UN expenses.
Imo he would agree.. especially if he saw our government meddling in other countries and toppling the leaders.. NATO is corrupt. Let other countries defend themselves. Help, only if asked. Period. Time to take care of our own country.
US media shouldn't have to worry anymore about listening to the late President Nixon because he is gone...Rest in peace. He is gone forever, done 🖤.
Ted Koppel was annoying but substantive. His depth is missed in our politically combative and shallow media environment.
back when the republican party still had some decency.
Like going along with America's Democrat enemies?
As a lifelong Republican, I agree with you.
The White House is run by Democrats and there's no decency there.
Especially when the democrat party has had NO decency. Ever.
Its strange to hear somone like Nixon, intellegent and well formulated and compare with todays politicians , donald in particular
You mean Biden?
What a crook
Those who still label Nixon a crook are thinking small, short term. He was a brilliant geo-political strategist. We sorely lack voices like his today.
There is nothing, I despise more than ignorance🇺🇸
@@xipingpooh5783 He resigned as President. Ignorance indeed.
That right? What did he steal?
Your are thinking Biden, now there is your crook.
