    Just a reminder before you Sheetrock your place, don’t forget to place steel plates where you have drain pipe or vent pipe inside the studded walls. I know this from experience and dealing with a massive leakage after screwing into one of the drain pipes. Up in VT we didn’t need an inspection so I found this out the hard way.

    Hi Fellow youtubers!! If moisture is getting through the damp proof course into your concrete, sealing the top will lock that moisture in, in warm weather the moisture will evaporate and cause bubbles in whatever you sealed it with.... but a coating will keep the dust down as long as its dry on application... That's how we do it in Scotland, have a nice day and God bless!!

    For the garage floor you could use epoxy floor sealer, it`s used a lot in car repair shops or machine shops. It prevents moisture coming up, and oil staining your floor. It also makes it easy to clean the floor with a squeegee. You apply it by pouring it on the floor, and smoothing it out.

  • @virgilbowman279
    @virgilbowman279 3 года назад +3

    Martin, coatings for concrete can be challenging, putting the vapor barrier in was a great 1st step. The next step is to assure good adhesion and that means making the surface rougher similar to 100 grit sand paper. This can be accomplished mechanically or with a chemical. Once that is completed a product like Insl-x (a Benjamin Moore product) Hot Trax or Garage Guard would be great choices. Both are designed to withstand the parking of hot tires and not peel up.

    There's a special liquid that you can put in a 20" high or so hand pump container to spray at least two coats on the garage floor. We did that with our triple car garage and it did wonders to preserve the floor. I can't remember the name of the spray liquid but hubby just told me he got it at Home Depot. Go online or call them and tell them it's new concrete sealant. You will want to put on SEVERAL Coats ok? It worked for sure.

    Here in South east Idaho a licensed plumber must do the work unless it is your own house. we are hooked to the City sewer and it gets complicated. The plumber has to put in a "back water valve " to keep the sewer from backing up into the basement, we are moving a 70's house on to the farm to rent out. 4 1/2 baths 5 bedrooms plus office. too nice a house for them to crush and send to a landfill.

    When you do put the hole and pipe through the roof make sure to put a vent cap on to prevent rain and snow from going down the pipe.
    Home Depot should have some sealant options. Thompson water seal skould work... think about the slip aspect, some paints can be slippery in snow country and if you go cheap... probably plan on doing it again someday, thats just the way it works out usually.

    Put 1/2" plywood on each side for 24" of the damaged area. Put screws every 4" across each runner and cross member. Stagger the screws from each side. This is enough to reinforce this area. If you had cut fully through the rafter, you would be replacing it. But since you have 3/4 of the rafter header left, you can reinforce easily.

    I would seal the garage floor to protect it from the top NOT protect it from moisture coming up from below. If you think the slab is going to take on water you will want it to dry and not seal it. If you are worried about moisture take steps to get the water away from the house. Also concrete dries "fully" at about 1 month per inch. Don't seal it before it is fully cured. Good Luck.

  • @monicapttrsn

    You can use a 2" x 4" stud wall for plumbing as long as the plumbing waste or vent line is not 3" in diameter, which comes from the water closet plumbing. And in a bathroom, the vanity and tub plumbing usually ties into the water closet plumbing. It's the water closet plumbing that dictates having a 2" x 6" stud wall. In a laundry room, you only need a 2" x 4" stud wall, because the plumbing lines are no more than apprx. 2" diameter. The only reason why you would go with a 2" x 6" stud wall in the laundry room is if you are going to run the dryer vent vertical through that wall and out through the roof or to another location higher up. Also, if you have any 3" diameter plumbing lines running through the laundry room wall area from above or below, then of course you would use a 2" x 6" stud wall; or maybe if you put a water closet in the laundry room. In my house, the wall is 2" x 4" with the water closet plumbing. It makes it real tough to get the drywall to work in that area, which is the whole reason why one would recommend a 2" x 6" stud wall in the first place.

    Sealing the concrete is to keep liquids from penetrating the surface not to keep moisture from moving up from the ground to the surface. If moisture is coming up through, you will have difficulty with the coatings you apply to the surface.

  • @michaelcarron3418
    @michaelcarron3418 3 года назад +1

    On the concrete floor, they have a product you spray on or roll on to seal the top. There are other products you squeegee on there, a little thicker and have different color pigments. Hey, it's a garage floor it's going to wet in winter with slush. If you have a leftover waste pipe, cut two pieces about two foot long, fill one full of dirt, the other leave empty. Now with a wood handle hammer tap on the full one, then the empty one, tell the difference of the sound. On that floor truss, would have moved the toilet over more for proper clearance, not cut into the truss. You may have issues with the inspection. Put a drop ceiling where the pluming is, in the future if you have issues it will be easy to get at to fix. You know there has to be a slight pitch on all waste pipe, mite be 1/4 inch per ten feet. Don't cut any holes in the roof yet, until the pipe is checked for leaks, called a stack pressure check.

    Martin you could epoxy the floor or Cromlens make a spray that is absorbed into the concrete I think silicone based to seal it, a cheaper option

    You need nail plates to cover your pipes so they don't get punctured during drywall

    From experience there's nothing better than a penetrating sealer made by Super-krete, call Pene-Krete. It transforms the alkalinity in the concrete to a gel thereby creating a permanent vapor barrier. I've used it in below grade basements with amazing success. Once you've done this application you can apply any topical coating you want and it will not blister up from hydrostatic pressure or leaching salts. My son had some ship to Oregon, recently because vendors are limited.

    Looks good to me you guys passed the cabin inspection you should ace it. I would use a waterproofer on the garage floor it's breatherable and cheaper that most things.

    Marty, just curious about what slope rate you are using for the drain pipe? I know you can do 4" with an 1/8" drop per foot and under 4" at 1/4" drop per foot. Your video doesn't seem to show drop so, I was praying you were using the correct slope rate to avoid any clogging and making sure it would carry the solids. I over sloped a horizontal pipe in my wall and found the water flows away, leaving the solids. A real mess and my inspector missed it.

    pour another floor with radiant heat,!!!, question 2,, you could have added 2x8 jog in one side of the wall & made easy access on one side little take out panel,, instead of ripping the whole wall apart.. aloha

    I would go with an epoxy coating to seal the garage floor. Affordable-ish, very durable, and is customizable.
