Funnily enough this scam would inspire the pasta company San Giorgio to make a series of commercials based on it in the 70s. Using the tagline “now you know, spaghetti doesn’t really grow on trees, but if it did, nobody would grow spaghetti like San Giorgio.”
Not too dissimilar to Orson Wells' infamous 'War of the Worlds' radio broadcast in the 1930s, which had people fleeing to the hills thinking the Martians has invaded.
Spaguetti is so common place around the world today, we kinda take for granted how weird it must have been to people that never ate or see anything like that at the time, and them seeing on tv that it grew on trees. It is really funny...
I'm 57 today but I remember when I was a teenager the BBC rebroadcast the spaghetti tree joke when it was one of its anniversarys but the made sure everyone knew it was an old April fools joke, not sure if it was the anniversary of the actual joke or of panorama
Great video! I have to say: for me, this reminds me of fables about how in the old days merchants explained how to get spices, that you either had to pass a monster or climb to the top of a mountain, etc. Basically, they told how dangerous it was to get the spices, so it was justified how expensive the spices were.
It was the BBC, Panorama was a heavyweight current affairs program and Dimbleby was their top presenter, spaghetti was an exotic food in England in those days, so who was to not believe it
Is the music at the end Ogre Battle(my brain's leaning towards Tactics Ogre) or Final Fantasy Tactics? My brain's failing me for some reason and doing an "oh, what's that from again? I think it's Tactics Ogre... but I could be wrong."
Excellent video on a classic. Could you do a video about the other hoax where everything in a holiday destination was printing terms? On a similar not, maybe a video about Ghostwatch?
This is not fake news, it's just a prank. The whole point of fake news is to deliberately portray a known falsehood as truth in order to undermine the truth for various, nefarious reasons. This was was not the intention here. This was made, simply to entertain & amuse. Big, big difference.
The best April Fools jokes come from organisations you least expect - and this proves it. I saw the original broadcast - my grandmother believed it and argued with my father as depicted. I think she still believed it up to her death as Richard D was one of here heroes. I was not aware of the negative comments, thinking about today, many of those, who were less than impressed, were the first wokes! Sadly the world is now too serious to enjoy harmless pranks lest we upset a single person. RIP "Fun"

That was in America - 🤣
Yes i think there was a power cut so people lost the first 20 minutes of the show

Cant believe i mentioned this on your Swedish April fools earlier today and here it is😀😀
Channel 7 news in Melbourne used a similar prank in a news article saying there was a risk of a shortage as the spaghetti harvest was failing.
That is a masterful prank. Well done to those involved.
Up there with the Swedish Cheese Rolling Festivals!
First time being early on an Adam Martyn video!! Really was shocked as a kid when my teacher played the video about spaghetti trees!!
Never thought TV would do a April Fool to its viewers.
In my opinion after I watched this video, this is the cleverest April's fools joke in history.
Wonderful to hear the story behind what was probably the best Aprils Fools prank ever!
Always learning something new here. Can you imagine if spaghetti trees were real?
I'd be in heaven!
If they were real you could grow them alongside your spaghetti marrows.
🤓Um, actually, the spaghetti trees would defy all logic of the universe and could potentially be fatal…..
🤓
It wasn’t all filmed in Switzerland. Some scenes were filmed at a food factory in St Albans.
I knew you were going to make a doc about this......and you delivered again Adam!

@Adam Martyn I just heard that Mike Yarwood died yesterday, will you be doing a video on him?
Does anyone remember Ghostwatch hoax that millions believed was real? That faced a bigger backlash.
Yes I remember that...
One kid killed themself due to it and it caused PTSD
I was going to ask if @AdamMartyn would do an Doc about it?
Yea, n when u watch it now it looks so fake n cringe but for the time people shat themselves
The sad part is some people would still fall for it today.

if this aired in the US it would be all fun and games until your child starts eating pine straw
although unrelated to pranks, I had a dream where BBC 1 or 2 started with Teletubbies. [I think]
this would be a great advertisement for heinz forget about Gibbs SR

4:51 £1,984! That would pay about 12 hours worth of a BBC sports personality's yearly salary...

That backlash was deserved. As an autistic, nothing feels worse than falling for a cheap trick, then being laughed at for being gullible
If that’s the case, then what would happen if you cross a bison with a chicken? Do you get Buffalo wings?
