Julia- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- Julia is a song John wrote about his late mother, who was hit by a car when he was 17. The track closes side one of the White Album, and features just John on acoustic guitar. He employs the travis-picking technique he learned from Donovan in India
Go to 0:35 to skip past my 'which guitar was used' theory
John recorded it on October 13, 1968, four days after his 28th birthday. In the beginning of Take One (made up of two rehearsal takes) John plays it without a capo and strums, then switches to fingerpicking. You can hear these early takes on the 2018 White Album box set:
• Julia (Two Rehearsals)
He struggles with the fingerpicking, and after he finishes the take George Martin can be heard saying 'Is George's Gibson in the studio near you?'
John responds 'Yes, it's much better'
This was buried in the audio, but I lifted up George Martin's voice in Pro Tools and included it at the beginning of this video. It's very interesting, because it implies that John started out on his sanded-down 1964 Gibson J-160 for the reharsals (take one) and then switched to GEORGE's Gibson
There are TWO possibilities as to which guitar George Martin was referring to:
George's 1962 Gibson J-160e
or George's 1968 Gibson J-200
George's main acoustic from Please Please Me until Magical Mystery Tour was a 1962 J-160e. In July 1968 he acquired the J-200 at Manny's in NYC and stopped using the J-160. John can be seen playing both his own J-160 AND George's J-160 in White Album session photos. So it's plausible John switched from his own J-160 to George's sunburst J-160 for Julia
But my best guess is that George Martin was referring to Harrison's J-200, because it had been George's main acoustic for over three months at that point. Not only that, but the tone of the acoustic guitar changes dramatically after these rehearsals, when John puts on the capo on the 2nd fret and begins take two. This take can be heard on Anthology 3:
• Julia (Anthology 3 Ver...
Comparing take one and take two, you can hear the acoustic guitar sounds very different. Not only because John put a capo on the 2nd fret, but there is a lot more low end in the Anthology clip. The J-200 has a much boomier sound, while the J160 is more mid-focused
Whichever guitar John chose for take two, it had to be a different one than the acoustic he started with in the early rehearsals. Take 3 is the one you hear on the album, and John then double-tracked his vocals and acoustic over take 3
He did a sloppy job of double-tracking the acoustic guitar, which I actually really like.
The overdubbed guitar also seems to include some light tape flanging on it
For my cover, I'm using a 1970's Ibanez Jamboree 698, which is a Japanese copy of a Gibson J-200. I did do a comparison with my 1966 J-160, playing Julia on both guitars. The boomy low end, more spongey high end and mid response of the J-200 was just like the record
I included some light tape flanging on the second guitar, using my Waves Abbey Road J37 tape plug-in. And of course, I put a capo on the 2nd fret of each guitar
Interesting Notes:
0:48 the overdubbed guitar enters, playing a little late (bottom screen, left channel audio)
0:55 the dubbed guitar plays an off time note on the A string
1:08 the original guitar (top screen) plays the low E-A-D strings in succession quickly, instead of following the prescribed travis picking pattern
3:22 The song ends with both guitars playing 332000 (Cmaj7). The dubbed guitar plays the high B and E strings a little later

Check out my description to read more about my theory that John used GEORGE's Gibson J-200 on this song!
The chords in the bridge send shivers down my spine
They’re very eerie, but in a great way
John was a genius with melodies and it really shows on this song
Its a brilliant chord progression 😢😊
I can't believe I never thought of this. Yes I am very glad you did this one. The travis-picking technique really is the best thing that happened to John as a guitarist. He mastered it. This song is one of the few that proves that.
It's always sort of amazed me that John was the one who had the discipline to really learn that technique, whereas Paul just sort of fudged it.
And there are really people over the age of 50 who wonder out loud, "PEOPLE still think about the BEATLES!!!" Answer: "Yes they do." And this is only one of over 100 songs why. Thanks for the video.
Thanks to Donovan for teaching and to John for putting in the 3 days….Travis picking is hard. You’re a beauty Sam > great work!
This and Prudence are probably my two favorite acoustic songs all time - thank you Sam!
Prudence isn’t acoustic
@@JJStale technically true - but was referring to the same picking method and style
@@thedrumdon2485 ah
Wonderfully played. It showcases just how good John was at chording. It is truly an acoustic masterpiece.
Tracking the gradual change in gear for each band member was fascinating, but John and George never abandoned their trusty J-160s. 💙
What a cool chord progression... I forgot how cool this song is!
The most beautiful song on the White Album imo. Great cover too, as always.
From one guitarist to another, you are my favorite guitar player on RUclips. I really enjoy seeing your passion for The Beatles’ music. I’ve learned quite a few songs just from watching you.
That means a lot man!
Simply beautiful
One of my favourite Lennon songs. Great playing, Sam!
This song is perfect. And this cover is also amazing. Such an accurate fingerpicking. They say it's the fingerpicking style that Donovan taught John Lennon. Congrats!
Perfect as usual! I love this song, one of my favourites In the White Album!
Played to perfection
Had a feeling you were going to cover this one! Even got the shirt to go with it! Fantastic!
This is my favorite song in john's
Her hair is floating sky~
Beautiful.
Beautiful!
Such an underrated song. Great job!
Brilliant, once again.
Such a beautiful song absolutely nailed it
Not an easy song to play - well done Sam
So BEAUTIFUL
Awesome finger-picking and interesting bits on the guitar type used.
Such a beautiful song, and so perfectly executed. That Ibanez sounds great, awesome video!
Been waiting for this one, thank you.
Sounds great as always! I love the little discoveries that are always being made about who used what
Beyond perfect. Job well done!
Great cover. I always knew John used a Gibson for the song. The bassy tone on the record (which is a little much in the original mix) is more indicative of the J200 than of the J160E or the Martin D28 especially.
it makes me cry 😢
now Look At Me please 😢
Great job Sam!
It seems similar chords for both for Dear Prudence and Happiness is a warm gun!
Great song - well played.
Very nicely played and I agree on all points. I have played this with my Martin and it lacks something. My Gibson equivalent is an Epiphone Excellente and it just has the fullness and compares well to a J-200's boom.
Amazing cover!
Who needs tapping and sweep picking to sound good! Awesome cover Sam
wow didn't know that! nice job as always!
Excellent
What a fantastic video game have a wonderful weekend Sam ❤😊
Love it.
Nice cover, i think you really good in this, no actually ¡¡¡you are the best!!! Thank you!!
Perfect! I've always known that tone was a J200!
I would love to see a cover from the 1968 home demo song that has paul and donovan both on acoustic playing "heather", it kinda remembers george "gently weeps"
Amazing. Thank you so much.
I wonder if you can cover some solo songs from the lads.
Love Comes To Everyone would be a great one. No one on RUclips did it justice.
Great, nice chords! ❤🤗
John used a near identical Travis picking part on Look At Me from Plastic Ono Band. He seemed to favour this particular set of chords. Also very similar to Yokos song Remember Love. Thanks again Sam! Happy Birthday! 🥳✌🎸
Look At Me was also written in Rishikesh, IIRC.
My mom’s favorite Beatles song. You gotta do the esher demo recording, my favorite version
I would have given more, but her birthday is coming up and I wanna give her an amazing birthday 😊😊
Man you didn’t have to, but that was really generous. Thanks so much and happy birthday to your mom!
@@sampopkin I felt like I had to do it. You are probably my favorite YTer of all time and life has been going well for me recently and I needed to give back. You deserve it for all the hard work you put it for us
Ah that’s so nice, but it’s you guys that comment regularly and give feedback that make it fun for me
Good work
Great job playing and also on the detective work as to which guitar was used. Like most others, I just assumed that it was John's J-160E. I got a chuckle out of your description where it mentions that John struggled with the fingerpicking. I've been trying to play that Fm7 chord (the one with the long pinky stretch to the 4th fret) for like 20 years and still get some muted strings but I guess that I'm in good company if John had some challenges as well. I had NO idea that there were two takes, the first with John strumming, so thanks for linking that and I'm going to go check that one out in detail right now. Thanks, love your channel and btw you are about to hit 20K subscribers, pretty cool!
That guitar sounds great for this song
Awesome cover, Sam! I always wondered which acoustic guitar John used, whether it was his Martin, Gibson J-160E, or J-200. It's definitely a beautiful song to end on for Disc 1 of the White Album!
you're my hero
Will you ever cover? It's all too much or while my guitar gently weeps from the love version
Yes
How about to Revolution #1 ??? Maybe? 😍
While I think the theory you've given about the guitar used is a decent one, I personally believe that John used George's 62 J-160 as he used it on the odd occasion (ADITL, I'm So Tired, etc). Not to discredit your research, just a personal belief. Great video as always and also Happy belated 31st :)
HJ (Harry)
Totally is a possibility. Maybe I’ll do a quick shootout on my J160 too, I’m convinced the j200 is the sound. But you’re right John did use George’s J160 a lot too
Please do Harrison 'Your love is forever' from the homonym 79 album.
👏👏👏👏👏
❤❤
Would you please do Long, long, long?
Already did!
@@sampopkin OMG, I was looking for it yesterday and did not find it. Will look through your channel again. Thank you!
Im absolutely praying to see a cover of Smile Away by Paul’s Album Ram, id be so excited to hear how it sounds
Definitely will cover that soon!
@@sampopkin Oh yeah! I’m excited to see it, hopefully I could see how its played since finding tabs for it is pretty difficult, mainly the solo and licks he plays on the track
Details like the bit you point out in the notes at 1:08, where one guitar (but not the other) plays the EAD strings quickly... I can barely hear that on this video, even with the visuals to highlight where it happens. So how you're able to hear that detail on the original recording, covered up by the vocals and the other guitar track, is beyond me!
Thanks, I usually use mvsep to isolate the tracks and then do very detailed listening. Make notes before I record
How do you guys get around the copyright thing on RUclips? Great stuff though 😊
isolating tracks helps
Have you done Dear Prudence yet? If so, do you think John is strumming the Epiphone Casino or Gibson J-160E?
I have not. I think John fingerpicked with his Casino. But there are some who say there’s J160 strumming later in the song too
MASTER BEATLES GEEK CHALLENGE: what is meant by this comment?
we owe this tune and 'blackbird' to DONOVAN.
Its only love next?
So hard
SAM!! Can you share tips on the barre chords at the first fret? Been struggling with those for years while learning this song.
And awesome cover :)
Thanks, those are especially hard. I guess my only advice is to mess with where your thumb sits on the back of the neck?
Put a capo to the second fret and do them on the third 😊
Song's impossible to play irl tho fr
correct me if i'm wrong my fellow BEATLES geek but from the white album on GEORGE used the J200 exclusively within THE BEATS and never used his J160 again until a little bit on 'ALL 'THINGS MUST PASS'. JOHN and PAUL were mostly 'MARTIN' fer acoustic by then but JOHN still used the J160, correct?
Sort of, I don’t know of any examples of George using the J-160 after 1967
Paul used the Martin exclusively from 68 onwards for a while
John used a lot of acoustics during 67-70. His Martin, his J160, George’s J160 and J200
@@sampopkin there are photos of GEORGE recording "ALL THINGS' using his stripped to natural wood J160 but how much he used it i don't know but i don't think he used at all in THE BEATS past 1967. i've seen pics of JOHN sitting on the ground during 'white album' and he's using the J160 so though it was mic'd i do beleive that's what he used on 'JULIA' don't know if it's his or GEORGE's before GEORGE had his stripped. i know he did obtain a MARTIN in india him and PAUL both.
@@NoirL.A. George did not have his J160 stripped, but John did. Both estates still own these guitars. You might be thinking of Harrisons Harptone acoustic natural- used on All Things Must Pass
@@sampopkin yeah you are right i was mistaking one fer another. until you caused me to go look it up i knew nothing about that git. yer a bigger geek than i and i'm HACKED OFF about it!!!!!
@@sampopkin GEORGE would have both his casino and his J200 stripped to natural wood probably because he still intended to use both but didn't bother with the J160 because though he kept it he never really intended to use it again. him and JOHN both preferred the sound after the guitar was stripped but then JOHN never stripped his LES PAUL JR. and GEORGE never stripped 'rocky' or 'lucy' so who knows....
John only plays the two guitars
How can I get a tone similar to the Dr Robert pedal you use in many of their songs? I mean how to equalize and what effects to use
It’s a very specific tone because of the diodes. It’s very scoopy and transparent. You want to take out a lot of the mids
@@sampopkin so a bit of tight fuzz, low mids and high treble and bass and cranked volume is a good starting point I guess. Thanks very much for the response, looking forward to your next video!
Side two....
The second chord is Am7 shape, not Am. Just take the ring finger off the string 🙂
As a matter of fact, can this guitar plug in or use a pickup
Nope all acoustic
Ok I just figured out you’re Shire plucker
That’s me :)
Hey sam do you know how they got the hypnotic effects on John's vocals?
Probably some ADT, automatic double tracking. Which produced that tape flange sound heard on tomorrow never knows, Lucy in the sky
John certainly milked that picking pattern and it sounds trully amazing. l never understood the need for double tracking though, but still, great song, and great cover.
This is so good please do Sexy Sadie nexttt
yess
my guitar is broken. I can’t get F7.
On the album is the the second guitar part just the first one through ADT or is it a separate recording?
Separate recording with ADT as well
Did you have played happiness is a warm gun?
Yes I covered it on my channel
@@sampopkin I saw, thanks. I thought was with guitar of nylon haha
Show this to Sean Lennon, please
Where'd you get the shirt from?
Modshoes
Is this the same picking pattern as Dear Prudence?
Yes pretty much exactly the same
Seems John was awfully fond of George’s J-200.
Are you picking the strings that hard on purpose to imitate John ?
Honestly not really, when I record these I’m listening to the original song in my headphones. Sometimes my lack of ability to hear my own guitar makes me pick harder
My least favourite Beatles song. The bridge sounds phrygian to me.
