@@paigecook4750 she died of pleurisy caused by pneumonia. They wanted to drain the infected fluid and she might have lived but was told she would not have danced again. She refused the operation and died a few days later
Her arms flailing is such a beautiful move especially when you know birds are known to do the same thing when trying to fly even if they're sick or injured 😢
I love the little bits of dance history you share! I've also noticed how different Pavlova's version is to today's version. Her's always seemed more desperate, and almost literally wrestling with death while today's version, like you said is more of Odette. It makes sense now that you've explained it!
Mikhail Fokine made this little dance on Pavlova, and I think the only one to whom he personally taught it was Tamara Toumanova. You are correct--today;s version is not like Fokine's creation.
I recommend watching it at 0.75 speed (go to video configurations and there you can select it). Videos from those times are accelerated, if you watch it at 0.75 you'll listen to the tempo closer to what might have been, and her movements are much better appreciated.
Why does this incredible performance impress so many of us who watch the ballet with tears of admiration? In my humble opinion, because it's perfectly represents the “Belle Epoque”... dying, like a beautiful and fragile swan that lived so short.
The Great Pavlova... Tragic 120 seconds of dying wounded bird, which the last effort flies, loses altitude and fighting for his elusive life... This dance has become an immortal masterpiece... The one you watch without breathing. And every time you wait and hope that the Swan will not wave its wing for the last time in the agony of death...

Самое лучшее исполнение! Я смотрю и у меня даже сердце болит от эмоций! Ведь это действительно умирающая птица, которая в последний раз пытается ещё раз взлететь.
I have loved ballet for years. It is so nice to see Anna Pavlova in motion on the internet after seeing so many photos of her years ago. She emphasizes her gender in the way she moves while dancing more than some modern ballerinas do.
@@giasharie274 I believe this ballet is more about a swanlike nature and trying to look at the sadness of death in a lovely way. My comment about how she emphasizes her femininity was just my opinion of Pavlova's dancing.

I once came to visit Anna Pavlova's museum in north london, I saw a pair of ballerina shoes and his perfume on the drawer, I never knew which fragrance she weared.
I believe ballerinas were much better in the early years because it was the true art of ballet. Today ballet is sometimes mixed with modern dance and it dilutes the beauty of it. Some changes are artistically needed, but not to the level of combining other forms of dance to steer it away from the authenticity of true ballet. Ballet is meant to be breathtaking, with the stories told within the dance and with purity. .
Back then it was about the acting and the lines. Now there’s lots of pressure to have crazy turnout and flexibility and some people’s bodies aren’t able to do that because people’s hip shapes are different. So, I absolutely know what you mean.
@@sydiekitty The obsession with hyper extension and flexibility drives me nuts. It doesn't make you a good dancer. And the people who barely even dance and just do trick after trick after trick...grr.

Myrna Loy's, 2 part interview with Dick Cavett in 1980, mentions that when she was dancer. Working as a teen in prologues at Graumans Egyptian theater in Hollywood. Took the public transportation to see Pavlova do the The Swan in downtown LA. That is where she was spotted, by a Photographer, interconnected with Valentino, and Warner Studios. She was to model while in her sculpting class, for a sculpture in front of Venice High School, Venice, Ca.
It is called being en pointe. It takes years to master the technique and strength that it takes to go en pointe safely. Many dancers go en pointe at age eleven or twelve, but that is only after years of training and evaluations from their instructors. The pointe shoe has a "shank" that supports the dancer and allows them to rise up onto the "box", which is what they dance on.
@Jan-Ola Ellingsen Yes, indeed. Talent cannot be fully utilized without hard work. Anna was and still such an inspiration. She struggled greatly, but she worked hard and became one of the greatest prima ballerinas.
i really love this, im proud to know her, and seeing how much her version is different than today is so cool, she really looked like a dying swan by her wings trying to fly.
