Many people like to compare this system to the one in Toronto: which one is better? Here is a link to the subway in Toronto made by me: • Toronto's Subway System
The Montreal Metro (French: Métro de Montréal) is a rubber-tired metro system, and the main form of public transportation underground in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The Metro, operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), was inaugurated on October 14, 1966, during the tenure of Mayor Jean Drapeau. Originally consisting of 26 stations on three separate lines, the Metro now incorporates 68 stations on four lines measuring 69.2 km (43.00 mi) in length, serving the north, east, and centre of the Island of Montreal with connections to Longueuil, via the Yellow Line, and Laval, via the Orange line.
The metro system is Canada's busiest subway system in total daily passenger usage, serving an average of 1,111,700 daily passengers on an average weekday (as of Q1 2011). In 2011, 308.7 million riders (transfers not included) used the Metro. According to the STM website the metro system has transported over 7 billion passengers as of 2010, roughly equivalent to the world's population. Montreal has built one of North America's largest urban rapid transit schemes, serving the third-largest number of passengers overall behind New York and Mexico City, and attracting the second-highest ridership per capita behind New York.
The Montreal Metro was inspired by the Paris Metro and in turn is also the inspiration for the Lyon Metro and Marseille Metro, as well as the Mexico City Metro, all constructed a few years later, and all which also share the same rubber-wheel car design and similar Montreal Metro station architecture.

I find it difficult to name a number one. Been to Toronto and loved riding their subway. Never been to Montreal. Their system looks great.

I can remember riding the subway when I was in Montreal in 1995. I thought that it was ok. It sure beat driving on the busy streets.

Montreal subway is remarkably clean. Kudos to the STM staff for keeping it that way.

Les métros de Montréal sont effectivement construits sur le modèle de ceux de Paris car le métropolitain de Montréal a été construit en étroite collaboration entre Québec et France.Mais les voitures sont construites par Bombardier qui est une entreprise québécoise.

I find it unique how Montreal's metro, Has a more, Decorative, Europian feel to it, Like something you would see in paris or some place like that, Unlike Toronto's subway, Which has a more new york subway feel to it

I like Montreal's system better than Toronto's. TO's is boring, has limited lines, and the stations really suck. Stations generally look the same. I have read the comments here and have to disagree with some. Toronto's is nothing close to NY, and for those who don't think NY has a decorative feel, I disagree. The mosaics in NY stations, and some of the art work on the elevated stations are very nice and intricate. But hands down Moscow's stations are the BEST.

I have been on the NYC, London Underground, Toronto, Montreal, Barcelona and Lille subway systems. NYC and London have massive systems that cover most of the entire cities, they are huge. Barcelona was 3rd biggest at 102km of track. Montreal 4th at 69km of track, Toronto 5th at 68km long and Lille smallest at 45km. NYC most reliable with 24/7 service, but also the most confusing, lack of maps and when you do find one, not to easy to follow, I found London system easier. London system is good except it closes so early, around Midnight usually. NYC best for getting around once you learn the system, but it has some of the dirtiest, ugliest, darkest subway stations. Montreal I can say wins the tittle for the nicest and cleanest stations, while Toronto is a bit more of a NY feel, but kept cleaner and probably they paint it fresh every now and then, unlike NY. Barcelona pretty good system, kept pretty clean, just watch your wallet, lots of pick pocketing going on there. Lille was ok, modern, safe, but small system. Toronto and Montreal both need subway expansion as despite being only half the size of other subways in American cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Washington only NYC actually carries more daily passengers then Toronto and Montreal. They are very well traveled busy systems but lack covering many areas in the cities, even more so Toronto a city that is growing fast in population but very slow at building new mass transit, a lot of it because of politics and funding delays.

Station design and signage, reminds of the Santiago de Chile Metro (which in turn was inspired by Montreal's, Paris and Mexico City subway system)

I thought there was music played in the stations until I heard it from the motors of the trains

Even though they are of higher maintenance, I prefer the rubber-tyred metro to the metal wheels of the ones in DC.

I would love to see this in person someday! I live in Denver CO, USA; and we are developing rail transit here. Still another 3 years or so, until its finished. Right now you have to get everywhere here by car, makes for horrible traffic in an urban area about 1 million people smaller than Montreal.
