Thanks for a concise and contemplative video! Instead of harping on who needs it, you pointed out what are killer features we've all been asking for which will no doubt show up in 10.6.6 because they kinda have to to be compatible. The two biggest being automated (machine learning / AI) background removal and auto music editing. Whether they're as full blown as Resolve's magic mask or Premiere's music editing we'll have to see. Fast Cut looks akin to some of the auto edit plugins I've seen recently. The animated drawing is an added bonus demonstrating why you'd want to edit on an iPad. Probably expect more features like this in the future. That's 4 huge updates that are likely coming in next desktop version 10.6.6, assumingly on 5/23 or sooner. As to the subscription model, lets hope they don't create ransom-ware like Adobe. Utilize watermarks or limiting saving abilities if you're not paid instead of a complete lock out. Good stuff as always Brad!

This is the first time I would consider NOT owning both a MBP and iPad. I don't have a need for an iPad Pro right now. I have an older gen regular iPad for basic functions where I don't want the additional weight and bulk of a MBP. It's also how I control my iPhones and Osmo Pocket when I'm doing interviews in the field (MoviePro/Filmic Pro remotes, DJI Mimo). The MBP is for longer trips or when I need a "laptop experience." Tablets just don't "feel" the same as a laptop. I've tried the Magic Trackpad and a 3rd party keyboard that has a trackpad with an iPad and it's just not the same. Neither are the 3rd party keyboards I've used. Though the one I use is good enough. With all that said, my MBP (2017 13") is nowhere close to being powerful enough to do the editing I need, albeit it pretty basic. An Apple silicon notebook will solve that and my current iPad (5th gen) is still capable enough for how I use an iPad. I could even see going with the Air instead of the Pro since I don't actually need the features of the Pro. But I'll still probably be a 3 device person - desktop, laptop, tablet. I am excited to see if this will lead to more innovation on the desktop version of FCP, and if you can easily switch between iPad and MacOS versions rather than just going from iPad to Mac.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I'm not sure I could fully commit to using an iPad for the kind of editing I do when I'm traveling but who knows 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe after trying it myself I might change my mind. I just love my M1 MBP too much. I do think this will lead to more innovation on the MacOS version of FCP.
Yeah I think that might put a lot of people off for sure. The MacOS version of FCP costs $300 once-off, which is 6 years of the iPad version's yearly fee. If you did edit family videos on an iPad, you could probably subscribe only for the months that you need it and then cancel the subscription. That would be a hassle but would certainly save you some money.
This is iMovie with a new skin. You can't round trip from this to desktop and back. Can you imagine you start to work on your iPad and then transfer to your Mac for a while and you go to travel again and now you can't do anything? And it's $5 a month to get the iPad version of what you have on desktop? You can't work with media on an external drive. That's a deal breaker right there even if the round tripping wasn't. Meanwhile with resolve for iPad you can work on projects in the cloud with multiple collaborators at multiple locations doing things like color correction and audio mixing. This is a tool for apple to compete for iPad creators with LumaFusion and other tools and to say they're working on Final Cut Pro, which hasn't had a significant feature release update in years.
Yeah I hear you. I think that for people on the go, it will be handy to be able to start an edit on the iPad and then transfer it to a Mac when they get home. With it being a totally separate app I can totally see why they have to charge for it, but a lot of people would have liked being able to choose to subscribe or to pay a once-off price. We've all been waiting for some big updates for FCP for a long time. I'm hopeful that we'll see some much-needed updates coming soon 🤞🏼
$4.99 a moth is awesome. That’s 6 years of editing at the same $300 as FCPX. What folks are missing is this opens the app up to people who cannot afford $300 for an editor. And it will grow the user base of FCP and after all the people who “swear” there gonna quit leave. (Let’s be real most are not really gonna leave 😂, scream on the Innanetz makes them feel Man 💪🏽). Look there are options ya’ll welcome to leave and go to resolve. Most of the mobile editor cost a lil something and are decent. This mean faster updates and bigger user base this is ultimately good for FCP. If you are hobbyist realize you picked a app with Pro in the name 😂 Great Video BW 🤙🏽
Thanks for stopping by Doc Rock! Yeah, that's a great point! A bigger FCP user base (regardless of whether it's iOS or MacOS) it's a good thing for the great FCP community. 😄🙌🏼
@@PSy84 That remains to been seen. In your words Apple did not take the users serious until now. I don't think a subscription will change this attitude.
what about the people who bought the full price version does that mean those who bought it are going to get screwed over from buying the desktop version or do we get the ipad version for free seeming people bought it, or are they going to make the desktop version too subscription based and screw over those that did buy it, like the other company who made Fimic Pro now they've gone subscription based.
@@akbgaming1987 They are two separate apps so this doesn't affect the MacOS version you've bought. Whether Apple makes a move to a subscription model for the MacOS version remains to be seen.
I will never use it, plus it starts a subscription model, plus it will mean FCP dev's not working on the mac version, so all round a negative for me :-)
Yeah, not a fan of subscriptions either but if Apple is making more money from FCP (even through subscriptions to the iPad app) they are going to have to pay more attention to FCP and provide updates. Updates and new features to the iPad version will mean that they need to implement those new features in the MacOS version as well, in order to send projects from the iPad to a Mac. A fringe benefit of the iPad app is that MacOS users should get some cool new updates too 😄🤞🏼
In Your Video You don't speak about the very tedious process of importing your video rushes on the ipad, the "files" app doesn't have any way of ejecting hard drives + really low transfert speed.. Good luck if you plan to work on a 4k project !
I didn’t mention it because no one knows yet (other than the select few who have used it) what the transfer speeds are going to be like directly in the FCP app. Hopefully it performs better than the files app! 🤞🏼
@@Brad_West I just finished editing a short-feature and was responsible for the whole pipeline (sending to color, to vfx, etc etc). Which means a decent amount of converting/exporting... I also do a bunch of converting for freelance gigs. What's great about having a iPad with M1/M2 processor is that you could use that powerful processor to convert stuff, without affecting your computer, NLE and all.
Yeah I feel you. A lot of people will feel the same way. I personally don't think FCPX (10) will become a subscription based app. However, I do think the possibility is there in the future when Apple releases the next big iteration of FCP (FCP11 or whatever it might be called).
Price of entry for FCP licensed version has always been a barrier to trying it out. Now I can spend $15 for three months to see if it is for me. Why is that a bad thing? I think it opens to tool to more people.
Apple set the price of FCP at $299 more than 10 years ago and it never changed. Based on that, I think it’s unlikely that the price for the iPad version will change.
Apples next steps: One free update for fpcx Desktop Then fcp11 with supscrition Force to update to a new OM..few month later your old Version will be so slow that you want to upgrade ... Massive leavings to DVR since the CEO would never ever make DVR a subscription model and he stands by his words ..
I think your prediction is a very realistic possibility. I suspect that having an iPad version now that is a subscription model, is a way to try and warm people up to the idea of the subscription model on the MacOS version when they drop a big new update (like FCP11).
I just dont see a world where portability is a primary focus while editing and NOT just using a much more powerul machine such as a MacBook pro seeing everyone will be attaching a keyboard and the apple pencil.
Fair point! I don’t see myself editing on the iPad instead of my MacBook while traveling but I do think there is definitely a market for people who would find that workflow beneficial.
Is it really possible that Apple will enforce us, who already bought FCPX for MAC OS in a monthly Subscription? If something like this will happen, i'm totally leaving Apple and their greedy leader for DaVinci. Cheers!
IMO, I don't think it will happen with FCPX (10), but I wouldn't rule out all possibility of it happening with FCP 11 or whatever the next big iteration is.
Im trying to comment on as many of these ITS SO GREAT FCP IS ON IPAD videos - because they ALL seem to be missing A HUGE HUUUUUUGE point here - this is NOT FINAL CUT PRO - this is Final Cut Pro They have NOT PORTED Final Cut Pro FULLY to the iPad with this - first and foremost being you CAN NOT create a project on the Mac and then open it in this APP. Which means they have different architecture - and that is just the beginning - third party plugins - all have to be re designed - and re paid for by you - They DID NOT Bring Final Cut Pro - to the iPad - they made a COMPLETE different version of Final Cut Pro - for the iPad - the integration between this app and Final Cut Pro on the Mac - is exactly the same as Lumafusion - or any other NLE on the iPad - just be HONEST WITH PEOPLE! They brought PAGES to the iPad - I can start a document on my Mac and Do 100% of the same tasks in the SAME FILE on my iPad - that can not be done here - because they are TWO DIFFERENT APPS!!!
The two versions of the app are made for two different operating systems (MacOS and iOS), so yes the architecture is different for sure. Apple probably had to build it from the ground up. At the end of the day, it's still Final Cut Pro. FCP is more complicated than Pages and IMO it's unrealistic to think that the iPad version would be identical to the MacOS version. You will be able to take projects from the iPad to a Mac, but not the other way around, yet. Who knows, maybe that is something that will change in future?
@@Brad_West I get the UI needs to be different to accommodate TOUCH and what not - PAGES has features like this too - the marketing here is - you now have FINAL CUT PRO on the IPAD - but - None of your projects from Final Cut will work, None of your Plugins from Final Cut will work, - if you edit from external drives, then your workflow is now different - so its only "Final Cut" in name only. The fact that 3rd party devs will have to RE develop plugins for it is proof of that alone. This is a complete stand alone app from Final Cut Pro - MAC....they barely can interact with each other - and with the addition of a subscription - I don't think that is going to come any time soon - why would apple provide a way for people to get around the NEED they are creating with this NEW APP?? C'mon man - this is OBVIOUS!
I’ve felt the same with the lack of updates and pro features that have been requested for so long. The optimist in me hopes that we’re turning a corner here and that good “pro” updates are coming 🤞🏼
They KILLED It! "Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year with a one-month free trial". $50 a year! No Way!!!! I just canceled my Adobe subscription because I was tired of paying over $60 a month for software I only used for one client. All the others, I use FCP or Resolve Studio both of which I have paid $300, ONCE. I will stick for travel FCP using my trusty MacBook Air M1 which I already own. Even though I have a iPad Pro M2, I can always use Resolve on it as it was a free download. Hope it stays that way.
Yeah I think everyone feels the same way about the MacOS version. My prediction is that FCPX (10) won't become a subscription but the next big update to FCP (that could be called FCP11 or whatever) might be. If that does happen, it would be great if they at least gave us the option to either subscribe or to pay once off.
@@Brad_West I am being selfish, even though Apple has a gazillion dollars in cash their employees deserve to be compensated. I bought FCPX and Motion when they launched which works out to $2.24 per month! I got my money’s worth. *BUT* FCP 7 was a perpetual license (I believe) which didn’t transfer to FCPX, also a perpetual license. *Notice* they don’t call it X anymore. I think that’s paving the way for a subscription model for new buyers much like 7 to X.
@@austinevplab7167 Yeah I also bought the perpetual license for FCP7 and eventually gave the disks away. I bought FCPX like 10 years ago and have more than gotten my money's worth over the years. Time will tell I guess 😬

Facts I get it onetime purchase is the best but cmon 4.99 or 50 $ by all means if you find your self not a song it as much cancel it. Or switch it for Hulu
Well I would never subscribe to this subscription model,iPad or Mac you either have to be a complete mug or a premier user (aka mug) to pay monthly to use software ,,, I would scrap FCPX in a heartbeat just like Apple did to Final Cut Pro 7 I will move to daVinci resolve and if they start that subscription rubbish I will just give up editing altogether and find another career I will not be held hostage waiting years for updates ….
If you are hobbyist realize you picked a app with Pro in the name 😂
Great Video BW 🤙🏽
Thanks for stopping by Doc Rock! Yeah, that's a great point! A bigger FCP user base (regardless of whether it's iOS or MacOS) it's a good thing for the great FCP community. 😄🙌🏼
Subscription based also makes the app have many updates esp in features since developers are pressured
A fringe benefit of the iPad app is that MacOS users should get some cool new updates too 😄🤞🏼
In Your Video You don't speak about the very tedious process of importing your video rushes on the ipad,
the "files" app doesn't have any way of ejecting hard drives + really low transfert speed.. Good luck if you plan to work on a 4k project !
I didn’t mention it because no one knows yet (other than the select few who have used it) what the transfer speeds are going to be like directly in the FCP app. Hopefully it performs better than the files app! 🤞🏼
Barely anyone will use the ipad app.
What I'd for sure use is an iOS version of Apple Compressor!
It will be interesting to see how many downloads it gets. Out of curiosity, what would you convert to, if you had an iOS version of Compressor?
@@Brad_West I just finished editing a short-feature and was responsible for the whole pipeline (sending to color, to vfx, etc etc). Which means a decent amount of converting/exporting...
I also do a bunch of converting for freelance gigs.
What's great about having a iPad with M1/M2 processor is that you could use that powerful processor to convert stuff, without affecting your computer, NLE and all.
Yeah that makes sense. Being able to do all your converting on another device like that would be super handy! 😄🤙🏼
@@Brad_West Yes. Especially for those who don't have both a desktop and a laptop
I paid $300 for the MacOS app … 😅 it’ll be unfair if they switch to an monthly subscription 😢
Yeah I feel you. A lot of people will feel the same way. I personally don't think FCPX (10) will become a subscription based app. However, I do think the possibility is there in the future when Apple releases the next big iteration of FCP (FCP11 or whatever it might be called).
it's just for serious hobbyists & vloggers..not for editors
I think that is probably their target audience with the iPad version.
Price of entry for FCP licensed version has always been a barrier to trying it out. Now I can spend $15 for three months to see if it is for me. Why is that a bad thing? I think it opens to tool to more people.
You could use a trial for free during 3 months on your Mac...
I think the low monthly fee is part of Apple’s strategy. It will entice new users and grow the Final Cut Pro user base.
5 bucks a month now but 20 to 30 later.
Apple set the price of FCP at $299 more than 10 years ago and it never changed. Based on that, I think it’s unlikely that the price for the iPad version will change.
Apples next steps:
One free update for fpcx Desktop
Then fcp11 with supscrition
Force to update to a new OM..few month later your old Version will be so slow that you want to upgrade ...
@@Brad_West People could just say "no" and warm Apple up to the idea that they should at least provide a fair non-subscription option.
Yeah for sure. People could. I think Apple will do whatever they like though regardless of any pushback they might get.
FCP subscription possibility? Hah, bet Davinci are rubbing their hands 😏
They probably are 😂
Is it really possible that Apple will enforce us, who already bought FCPX for MAC OS in a monthly Subscription?
Apple taking FCPX seriously? Maybe for social media content creation. But nothing else.
There is definitely a market for FCP on the iPad at that price point. Compared to Premiere Pro, it's dirt cheap 😄
Noooooo! I don’t want a subscription model! Please don’t touch my Mac OS version of FCP!
When the next iteration comes around, I wouldn't be surprised if that was subscription only. It would be nice for people to have the choice of a once-off purchase or to subscribe though. Time will tell I guess 😬
I prefer free Davinci resolve!
I don't think you're going to be the only one 😄
I care they are forcing us to subscribe vs OWN - damm - people don’t want this.
Yeah a lot of people are going to feel the same way!
@@Brad_West principle And setting precedent.
Something is better than nothing. They finally gave us and now people are complaining about subscription. Lets be real here, $300 upfront wouldn’t have been very pleasant either. Am i happy with the subscription model? No! But it is finally available now and that is big
Facts I get it onetime purchase is the best but cmon 4.99 or 50 $ by all means if you find your self not a song it as much cancel it. Or switch it for Hulu
It’s a cup a coffee ☕️
Well I would never subscribe to this subscription model,iPad or Mac you either have to be a complete mug or a premier user (aka mug) to pay monthly to use software ,,, I would scrap FCPX in a heartbeat just like Apple did to Final Cut Pro 7 I will move to daVinci resolve and if they start that subscription rubbish I will just give up editing altogether and find another career I will not be held hostage waiting years for updates …. FROM A BBC EDITOR … ps I was one of the first people to introduce Final Cut Pro one to BBC NEWS from Apple Stockley Park headquarters… ❤ I promoted it, and I’m happy to walk away from it tomorrow…. Thank to the greed of Tim Cook, currently killing APPLE …
Yeah going the subscription route is a bold move from Apple because it is certainly going to upset a lot of people.
