They look just like chestnuts! I made chestnut stuffing for Thanksgiving, and it was really good.

When i visited American Samoa for two months in village of Amaluia the folks would gather the ifi nuts from the ground. The pe'a (fruit bats) would eat the outside flesh of the ifi then drop the pit to the ground. Then the ifi would be roasted in the umu. Shells broken open and nuts skewered onto coconut leaflet (tuaniu).
