Well, why I am not surprised that in this NL Central Rivalry Matchup between the Cincinnati Reds & Chicago Cubs that after a first pitch home run (0:03); the next player gets hit by a pitch (0:13); and in the head of all places?!?! And, look. I can understand it wasn’t intentional, but with the game already decided (7-0; final score was actually 7-1); there was no need for that. Well, guess what happened next?! The pitcher who threw the hit by pitch should be tossed (1:21-1:22); warnings should be issued to both sides (1:23-1:24); and no one should argue that. Unfortunately, Cubs’ Manager Craig Counsell had other ideas. Not only did get his money’s worth (1:35-1:36 ➡️ 😂🤣😂🤣); along with getting in the face of first base umpire, and Crew Chief James Hoye, and angrily asking: “…What the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 are you doing?! I think they did the right thing. I don't care if the pitcher has terrible control or not. The pitch was directed at the head. If it was just high and tight and gets the shoulder, that's a different scenario. Direct shot to the head though on very next pitch is going to get you ejected
Saw it on MLB network. May have been unintentional, but there was a factor that warranted an ejection following a home run. Pearson could say he wasn't trying to hit Stephenson, but the umpires are trying to avoid the situation from getting out of hand.

The Reds fans knew the umpire will throw his arm on Counsell as they saw Collins with the finger on the red button with the goggles on (It’s Oppenheimer Time!!!)
But but but Pearson did the "spin around oh shit whoopsie my bad" dance on the mound!!! Doesn't that mean he's completely innocent and "it just slipped"??? /s It has for OTHER pitchers who just got a warning after blatantly hitting a guy.

I just don’t like the unnecessary ejection because I believe the player will get fined and could face a suspension(doubtful nor should he) and really the umps gonna get yelled at by one coach no matter what. Pitches get away from guys it happens and that’s all it was
Please name the broadcasters who make these inane comments. Then replay them when their teams batter gets thrown at. Or make the pitchers bat again. Squeeeeel!!!!!
Oh come on. What pitcher is going to start their career with a new team by intentionally hitting a guy in the head simply because they gave up a home run? The logic here is insane. It's way, way more likely that he missed his spot than he intentionally drilled him.
That's one of the reasons I think it wasn't intentional. Not a smart move for your 2nd pitch on a new team. I guess the only one who knows for sure is Pearson.
If he was at AAA and did it in Vancouver, BC Pearson via provincial law where athletes held legally accountable for criminal actions in sports he may do some time in jail and paid a severe fine (at least $10,000) as what happened to Marty McSorley and Steve Bertussi for NHL most infamous match penalty incidents
In High school and college the catcher and the head coach (manager) are automatically chased from the game following the destroyed pitcher to the showers or the team bus
This was stupid. Clearly not intentional. The guy you just acquired yesterday that has no loyalty to anybody on the team is not head hunting a guy on a team he also has zero beef with just because you're getting blown out.
That's an example of a no-win situation. If they only warn, Bell is going to put on a show (as he has numerous times) and get run, and if they eject, Counsell gets run. One or the other was inevitable.
Also, if they rule it's unintentional and do nothing, then there is a possibility of the Reds pitcher retaliating, which then could lead to the benches clearing. It's a crappy situation all the way around.
there was no beef between the cubs and reds all year, nothing like cubs-brewers or cubs-cardinals. the game was a blowout, yes, but pearson wasn't frustrated or pissed, he's fighting for his career in his first appearance after the cubs gave him a second chance. the home run the very pitch before makes it look bad, but i couldn't imagine an easier way to get cut from a team than displaying unhinged retaliation in your first outing with them. it was definitely not intentional whatsoever, and if you disagree then you're not seeing the broader context. now, as an umpire crew, maybe you don't know this context, but when you're underinformed and the circumstances of the game have involved absolutely no beef nor intentional HBPs, you should assume good intention until proven otherwise-which requires a sample size of more than just 1 HBP. yes, hit head bad, very bad, of course, and it should be taken seriously, particularly to prevent future retribution that could put players in danger. but as established earlier, this was not intentional and this was the first instance of anything even resembling beef between these two teams. the rulebook's approach for unintentional HBP should have been the course of action, which as the video mentioned, is either giving warnings or doing nothing (and of course there has to be a warning given the head-hitting part). the situation was not out of control whatsoever, the batter was rightfully upset but not pissed as he would be if it was intentional, and a warning to both sides would have been more than sufficient to keep things tame. this was umpire overreach, and counsell was rightfully upset.

I get the whole circumstances of the game blah, blah, blah personally if it’s not intentional don’t eject unless it’s really poor timing and you need to keep the game under control which I don’t think was the case imo. I just don’t like the unnecessary ejection because I believe the player will get fined and could face a suspension(doubtful nor should he) and really the umps gonna get yelled at by one coach no matter what. Pitches get away from guys it happens and that’s all it was
Note that these rules about HBP do not apply to Yankees pitching..
Im surprised that a player that just got traded to a new team would do something like this.
That's one of the reasons I think it wasn't intentional. Not a smart move for your 2nd pitch on a new team. I guess the only one who knows for sure is Pearson.
Announcers gotta be thinking about a**** in jackpots here.
The Reds took the Cubs to the cleaners
Regardless of intentionality the optics look bad and Pearson should have been ejected.
Pitcher DESTROYED in seconds!!!
When the pitcher dropped his head after the crew chief straight red carded and took the beeline into the tunnel
Under minor league rules intentionally throwing at batter's head STRAIGHT RED CARD and automatic 10 games in the penalty box
Both Pearson and Counsell will go directly to jail, do not pass go and lose $20,000
Manager needs to go immediately for something like that -- you don't wait for warnings.
There's been far too much up around the head lately.
It was also the pitcher first game on a new ballclub. No way hes intentionally hitting a batter in his first game.
3 or 10 games in the penalty box and Counsell via liability spend a game or two in the cooler
Talk about a long leash here. . Council really went too far!
Craig should be ejected for actually leaving Milwaukee.
there was no beef between the cubs and reds all year, nothing like cubs-brewers or cubs-cardinals. the game was a blowout, yes, but pearson wasn't frustrated or pissed, he's fighting for his career in his first appearance after the cubs gave him a second chance. the home run the very pitch before makes it look bad, but i couldn't imagine an easier way to get cut from a team than displaying unhinged retaliation in your first outing with them. it was definitely not intentional whatsoever, and if you disagree then you're not seeing the broader context. now, as an umpire crew, maybe you don't know this context, but when you're underinformed and the circumstances of the game have involved absolutely no beef nor intentional HBPs, you should assume good intention until proven otherwise-which requires a sample size of more than just 1 HBP. yes, hit head bad, very bad, of course, and it should be taken seriously, particularly to prevent future retribution that could put players in danger. but as established earlier, this was not intentional and this was the first instance of anything even resembling beef between these two teams. the rulebook's approach for unintentional HBP should have been the course of action, which as the video mentioned, is either giving warnings or doing nothing (and of course there has to be a warning given the head-hitting part). the situation was not out of control whatsoever, the batter was rightfully upset but not pissed as he would be if it was intentional, and a warning to both sides would have been more than sufficient to keep things tame. this was umpire overreach, and counsell was rightfully upset.
You have taken too many fast balls to the head.
Rough draft?
@@DoctorWho14615 this feels like a good time to remind you that this channel has commenting guidelines to "be kind" and "refrain from flaming." also, a free piece of wisdom for you: attack the argument, not the person. but also, it sounds like you need a hug given you choose to be so hateful to strangers on the internet. so, i wish you hugs!
This is one of the most foolish overwrought tone-deaf anti-umpire posts I have ever seen on this channel...and I've been here longer than DJ Texan.
@@teebob21 and this is one of the most defensive, unsubstantiated, and inflammatory comments i've ever read. care to make any real points or do you, too, just want to be hateful? i've got nothing against umpires, but this was a case of the umpires letting power go to their heads and going above and beyond what the reasonable response was.
