HISTORY OF THE KEMAYORAN ONDEL-ONDEL STATUE
Ondel-ondel is a large human-shaped statue which is one of the cultural icons originating from Betawi Jakarta. Ondel-ondel is usually used in various traditional events or celebrations of the Betawi people.
In Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, there is an ondel-ondel statue which is one of the landmarks or icons of the area. And is one of the 8 Betawi icons determined by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through Governor Regulation number 11 of 2017 concerning the Betawi Cultural Icon. The determination of the cultural icon is an effort to preserve the culture that is characteristic of the Betawi people, an effort to display the identity of the DKI Jakarta Province, and as an icon to increase tourist attractions.
Kemayoran as an area located in the center of Jakarta also participates in preserving the characteristics of Betawi culture by installing ondel-ondel statues and also using them as icons of the Kemayoran area. PPK Kemayoran as the manager of the area, has built a pair of giant ondel-ondel that stand majestically on the south side of Jalan Benyamin Suaeb, the main road that divides the Kemayoran area.
The inauguration of ondel-ondel as an icon of Kemayoran was held on January 17, 2014. The giant ondel-ondel is 9 meters high and stands on a 4 meter high foundation, so that the total height reaches 13 meters. This makes the Kemayoran ondel-ondel crowned as the largest ondel-ondel ever in Indonesia and won the MURI record.
