    I think you need to try this again with a thermal camera. That was so cool!! Got a theory about why it stopped mid-way, where the two sections of the snowman were put together they got squeezed and made the snow denser. Not sure but either way it was a fun thing to watch!

    • @Beyondthepress

    • @herald0fmanwe

    • @landerscott2573
      @landerscott2573 6 лет назад +28

      I dont think so. I looked like the steel got held up by a clod of dirt and had to turn to get around it. If the steel had gotten held up by refrozen water then the steel would have just kept going slow no matter which way it went.

    • @killerjilk
      @killerjilk 6 лет назад +4

      I think it had to do with the Leidenfrost effect.

    • @jasbanza
      @jasbanza 6 лет назад +2

      i think it stopped as soon as it got to the third snowball due to compacted ice crust of the snowball and therefore it took longer to boil through?

    • @killerjilk
      @killerjilk 6 лет назад +20

      Here is my explanation: I think it was stuck because of the leidenfrost effect. When you first put it in, it had so much radiant heat that it melted the snow. At a certain point (when it was stuck) the radiant heat was not strong enough to melt the snow or had very little affect. The snow sublimated and so it created a layer of steam between the steel and it. This means that the steel couldn't go very fast because the thermal conductivity of steam is shit compared to the solid snow, meaning that it couldn't transfer its heat/melt fast. It started moving again because the steel cooled down enough to the point where the leidenfrost affect stopped happening and it made direct contact with the snow/water. An easy way to see what I am talking about is to take a pan, heat it up very hot, and dribble some water on it. If the pan is very hot, the water will skitter around and will not evaporate fast because its riding a cushion of steam, but as soon as the pan cools down to a certain temperature, the water makes direct contact and evaporates very quick. Although its very possible that it could be a mixture of things, so maybe everyone is right.

    @soylentgreenb 6 лет назад +2

    My guess why it got stuck the way it did: The loop for attaching the weight to a wire and a corner of the bottom of the weight cooled down much quicker than the rest of the weight (steel actually has pretty poor heat conductivity; e.g. look up sherman's neckties on youtube, you couldn't do that with a copper rail without ending up in the burn ward). The temperature had cooled down to the point where heat radiation wasn't much of a factor any more (goes as temperature to the fourth power) but it was still hot enough for the leidenfrost effect to kick in and reduce the rate of melting drastically.
    When finally it turned a bit it ended up on the bottom side that was still very hot and quickly melted through. The reason it turned was that the loop on the top side of the weight was colder than the bottom of the weight, so it was slowly melting more on one side than the other until it had turned so that the bottom faced down again.

    • @jamesnw
      @jamesnw 6 лет назад

      Could be, but I think it was really the larger patch of dirt it ran into. It took awhile for the patch to heat up and melt the snow below it.

  • @danip.3245
    @danip.3245 6 лет назад +8

    The weight of the snow caused the snow to become more compacted the further down the steel went, coupled with the melting snow filling in the existing snow under it with water, would naturally cause the steel to cool to the point where it cant win. Its sitting on very very wet snow, which makes it hold the cold better.

    • @newnuu6448
      @newnuu6448 6 лет назад

      New Nuu64 There it is... I was waiting for someone to say "it's the Leidenfrost effect." That's the go to answer for this channel. People love to say that. They heard it once, now anytime something hot is in contact with something cold... It's Leidenfrost... Of course. Lol

    • @danip.3245
      @danip.3245 6 лет назад +2

      Leidenfrost happens when something very hot touches something very cold. It only lasts for moments. That was minutes. the most likely scenario is that the water that melted away into the snow under the steel caused a weakness in the snow and it spilled out, allowing for the steel to continue melting the snow.

    • @KOZMOuvBORG
      @KOZMOuvBORG 6 лет назад +1

      Agree. The snow, being initially porous, would yield like styrofoam but the melt water would trickle down refreezing into denser ice beneath the red-hot-steel, impeding its descent

    Cat vs Red hot steel

  • @clayton8or
    @clayton8or 6 лет назад +1

    Actually i just had a thought... Ive seen the immense thermal capacity of this hot steel, especially when it was dipped into the water for a decent amount of time and kept boiling it off, the leidenfrost effect saving the steel from rapid cooling. But what if you took a liquid with a high boiling point (like gallium, with a 4000*F boiling point) and dunked something like this red hot steel in it? Gallium also has an extremely high thermal conductivity so if there was enough of it to suck the heat out of the steel fast enough, without the leidenfrost effect to keep it under control would it do something like contract fast enough to explode?
    it may be expensive to get that much gallium but its sure worth a try since it would be the first documented time of something like this being tested.

    You should have poured water into that snowman, let it freeze for a day and then tell someone to try and tackle it.
    Of course you would need to have a vehicle handy to drive them into a hospital for dislocating a shoulder.

    You guys should measure the weight of the steel before and after heating. I'd be interested to see how much change there would be.

    10:08 No stuntman needed! That was a perfect jump and hit. That's one of those where it HAS to work on the 1st take or it gets edited out of the video. Nice job both of you on this one. I love this channel. No bs and your personalities are great. Congratulations on your success!
