Contra Evolution (Arcade) Completed 1 Credit, 1CC - Loop 1 [4K]

Originally a mobile game, this game was released in arcades in 2011...but in China only. It's essentially a remake of Famicom / NES Contra with a few additions. There are 2 new characters that play differently than the series standard characters Bill Rizer and Lance Bean. Players can carry all weapon types and swap between them with a 3rd button.

At first, I wasn't interested in the game due to lag on the display; this was most likely caused by some type of video signal conversion. There are also gameplay quirks that took some getting used to. Some ledges do not actually extend as far as they visually appear to, leading to instant deaths if you attempt to time your jump like you would on a normal Contra. There is also massive hitboxes on the mines being tossed from the background near the end of the Snow Field stage. You can't be anywhere near them when they first appear or you're dead. Unfortunately, that's where I took my only death in this run.
I do appreciate the modern updates such as auto-firing weapons for most weapon types. Machine gun appears to do the most damage per shot, so I used it most in the tunnel stages. Spread is still good, but can't be fired ridiculously fast like NES Contra.
Once I got used to the games' oddities, it became more enjoyable. It's not my favorite Contra, so I probably won't be going for a high scoring mulit-loop run, or a no death / NoMiss run any time soon. When I reached loop 2, I killed off my remaining lives so I could enter my name.
Recorded from a stand-alone emulator on PC; no save states, cheats or autofire were used.

The machine gun has a much better rate of fire on this version of the game (compared to spread), so it takes much less time to kill stationary targets that are in the tunnel stage.
I like the spread gun better for some areas where enemies are not stationary, like in the final level where the mouths shoot out their projectiles.
