  • Ballinger Canyon OHV Area is located just south of Maricopa, and it has about 68 miles of marked and rated trails on public land. The terrain ranges from hard packed 4x4 roads, twisty sand washes, rugged and steep black diamond hill climbs, and narrow single track for dirt bikes. Trail 23 is located on the Northeast end of the park and it consist of a 4-mile single track trail along the ridge of a mountain range. This video shows the climb to the highest point from the westside trailhead, ~1000ft elevation gain. Past this point the trail becomes muddy for the next 1/2 mile during the rainy season before starting the main decent on the East side. Although this trail it is classified as a Blue trail, the level of difficulty of some of the segments is comparable to many of the single track trails in the Bay Area dirt biking parks, usually designated as black diamonds. This is a great park to visit during the rainy season when many of the Bay Area parks might be closed or too muddy to ride. Enjoy!

Thanks, I have a Tripltek 7 tablet mounted to my handlebars where I run the drone app and as well as OnX Offroad for navigation. I also carry a Garmin InReach mini as a satellite communicator, and it also tracks my ride.

Two and a half weeks ago, just before the storm came, in fact I had to cut my trip short. Planning to go back in a couple of weeks to film some more. This is a good park for this time of the year, not as wet as up here. 😀

I've never off roaded before. Years ago I rode street bikes for about 15 years or so, did some road race track days as well. I don't even have a bike anymore. If I wanted to try out off road dirt biking is there a place in the bay area I can rent a bike and gear as a beginner and just take it easy to see if I like it?

I am not aware of any place that rents dirt bikes, but garrahanoffroadtraining.com/ offers lessons and they can provide you with a dirt bike for an additional fee, which I would recommend you do to see if you really want to get into the sport. If you decide that you want to do it, consider purchasing a dirt bike with a low height seat, e.g., Kawasaki 230cc, unless you are a tall person. It will accelerate the learning curve. Another option to consider is to start with the new Surron Ultra Bee electric dirt bike, . Best of lucks!
