Pro Tip: Don't try to use the Street Fighter commands when trying to recover with Tatsumaki+Shoryuken. It's really not worth it and more often than not, you may end up fast falling to your death since pressing down is necessary.
GroundPoundable Pulling off the Shoryuken with the classic motion gives Ryu invincibility and significantly reduces his landing lag. It is hard, but for those that can pull it off consistently it can give some good advantage.
It also greatly increases the Knockback (not damage) of the sweet spot at the start, which is now invincible. It makes it one of the best intercepting moves in the game since it comes out so fast, is invincible, and kills stupidly early. To put it in perspective: A regular Shoryuken kills Ryu at ~135% A dragon punch input Shoryuken kills Ryu at ~95%
Love Ryu! But, I can't help forgetting this is Smash and not Street Fighter and I should stop attempting some bread and butter combos with him and play him as a Smash Bros character.
SideShowBatt having said that, ive actually done crouching short, short, low forward into red fireball. its just getting us to holding the A for medium attacks
SideShowBatt I know that Ryu's parry is a perfect shield, but when I see a hadoken coming to me I can't help but pressing forward to parry that, at least on my firsts matches
Love this character. He has layers of nuances that make playing as him really compelling. Perfect pivoting mixed in with input commands makes his pressure game more punishing but the execution has to be pretty precise. Some of the combos are insane.
Max, Ryu's Down Air is absolutely fantastic. If you use it like a jump in on a standing opponent, it pops them up. The height is based on percent, but what's amazing is that there is almost no difference in height in low percents than high percents, and Dair to Up Smash is almost always true. This means at low percents you can Dair > weak up tilt x2 or 3 > Up Smash. That combo is true at low percent and does ~35%, and leaves them open for an Up Air follow up, which will get you around 45%. Try to mess around with jump ins like that
Ryu is amazing, leave it to Sakurai and his team to take a character like Ryu and make him not only fit into Smash; but play incredibly fun. Tried him in 2v2 online and he makes a fantastic teammate for zoning characters. Also hoping for a WEEK OF RYU, but I know you're not too into 1v1 For Glory. . . Side note: who else really wants a stamina, no edge version of For Glory? Me and my friedns made a stamina arena that turned out amazing, felt like we were playing Street Fighter X Nintendo lol
It's nice to have a game where Roy is actually good. There was no reason to ever play Roy in melee when you could just pick up Marth. It seems to be the opposite here.
ImKylin They're both really good in the latest build of _Project M_, but I suppose that you were talking about official games. If that's the case, then yeah, it's nice that Nintendo has finally done Roy justice.
ImKylin Roy I'd say is the best Fire Emblem character, but he does not invalidate Marth and Lucina, unlike how Marth invalidated Roy in Melee. Roy is up in your face, pressuring you. Captain Falcon in his teen years. Marth is patience, defensive. I think Roy is better but I think all the Fire Emblem characters got stuff going for them, especially with the balance changes in the patch! (well, other than Robin. Robin is fun but i'm still worried)
Agreed. I haven't bought them yet, but I did fight both just last night. Roy is most definitely what he should have been since he came out, a balance between the agility and style of Marth and the power of Ike. He obviously doesn't quite have the vertical recovery of Marth, but only just.
I watched a Ryu custom tournament the day he came out. Competitive Smash players can flawlessly execute true Shoryuken (using the inputs) every time they use it. Ryu is fun to watch.
Roy is easily the best swordfighter in the game. He is kinda heavy, super strong, and is fast. Ryu is awesome to use. Smash 4 is one of th best games out there right now, loving the new stages, characters and features
Bizzare As much as i love Lucina as a character, i'm not too fond of her smash incarnation, not only is she far too tall, but i don't particularly love Marth's normals. Ike is love though.

I already decided to keep Ryu as my secondary (my main is Game & Watch), Ryu is so difficult to use, but is so satisfying landing a full combo on your oponent. Also his smashes and strong tilts are just amazing.
I feel like the odd man out here. I always found it super easy to do the button combos with the analogue stick but have a hard time doing them with a dpad, lol.
Focus Attack is actually pretty good for recovering Max, since you can still dash or backdash while using downB in the air. You can downB and dash towards the stage multiple times in the air before even using his jump or tatsumaki. It's kinda silly if you ask me, but it's there.
I really like how they designed him, but the optional, manual inputs screw me over sometimes. Most of the time I wanna do a fast-fall, forward air or back air, I get a hadoken or a tatsu instead, which gets me killed in high percentages. Aside from that, I really like playing as him.
So far I love Ryu a lot, I like the variability and the attention to detail they've done. I'm not a very big fightan guy, but the special inputs feel good and I'm sure I'll get better with practice. As for our boy Roy, I am SUPER pleased, in a way I didn't expect. I played a lot of Melee with my friends back in middle/high school, and never really used Roy a lot, but I was pretty darn good with Marth, relatively speaking to my friends' capabilities. But with new Roy, it just works so well I am mega happy I bought him. Also fucking LUCAS. He was my main in Brawl, and I'm crying inside from happiness he's back.
The mindgames with his down-b alone has won me too many matches. I condition them to think I'll just dash back and they'll rush in to punish; but then I hit the ground and turn around to crumple them, and then dash cancel forward into shoryuken.
I've loved Ryu so far. I haven't had a very hard time using his SF-style specials, especially on the 3DS. He has so many moves that it's a bit hard to remember how to do all of them, but it'll all come with practice. :)
One of my favourite factors with Ryu is just the sounds. The SF2 hit sounds, the SF3 Parry, all so good. Also, idle fun fact, if you're Kirby and you copy Ryu, you can still do the classic SF inputs for the Hadoken :D. Kirby with Hadokens is *really* good.
I've spent about a day and a half with Ryu at this point and I can honestly say, he's really very solid. I've played as pretty much every Shotokan SF fighter, from Dan to Sakura to Gouken (personally, I'm a Ken guy, but I get why Ryu was selected in this particular instance). And what I like about the handling of Ryu here is how everything is just so smooth. "Smash-ifying" him like this makes him very good, not just for those with experience using him but for typical Smash players as well. While there are some more complex combos that require practice, he can perform one of his standard three-hit combos by just tapping the attack button. And of course, the Toe Tap isn't difficult to use, either. I think one of the only things you have to really watch with him is if you're going to perform his specials the "correct, traditional" way, as I do (I only use the Special Attack button for maneuverability or to escape death), you have to take that extra split second to make sure you're facing in the right direction. Otherwise, a Hadoken meant for your opponent can very easily become a Hurricane Kick traveling in the opposite direction. It's also best to keep him away from edges, too, of his Specials might prove your undoing (sadly, I've Dragon Punched myself off a ledge more than a few times at this point). But beyond that, for a guy who came completely out of left field, Ryu is a joy to play and I'm glad he's here. Now I'm just waiting for Nintendo to say that Bayonetta is coming to this game. Because if they don't...>:(
Ryu was really fun to play. He felt more like a traditional fighting character, so it was much easier for me to play him vs the rest of the cast. I can say he's my new main, or at least a new main.
I love Ryu and yes I had difficulty playing him and doing the right inputs for the shoryuken... I'm also a big mega man player too but I guess a bit more practice with Ryu is a must for me
So i got board yesterday and fucked around with Ryu and did this. Quarter circle, focus attack, neutral special, quarter circle, half circle, killed opponent, "TALK IS CHEAP!" NOTE: I was just putting in inputs at random and somehow i was able to get a good amount of SF inputs. I would never be able to legitimately replicate this since i was being a little shit. Fucking Ryu man.
Ryu's been really fun to use on the 3DS. And it's also been pretty easy to do all the motions, so I've pulled off a couple of combos in some matches, but one downside is I almost always mess up lights and mediums because of the small buttons on the 3DS.
Ryu has 0 to death foot stall combos. Also a infinite focus combo on Charizard and Bowser. In other words hes pretty op. Lucas has an easy infinite and lastly Roy is Luigi tier good. Also Diddy is the new Greninja and Rosalina and Shiek still gonna beat you. Greninja got buffed
***** diddy too me seems like his moves r missed used, its the reason y people use that stupid down throw, up air combo. he has many other moves that can deal as much damage. i main diddy and i rarely use the down throw up air combo. and i have a completely different style with him. the banana scares all when diddy looks like hes going to throw it but nope. flip grab all the way.
***** That's why I like Diddy: he's a monkey. He's also an aerial fighter, and characters that are most at home in the air are the ones I usually play. I main Zero Suit Samus.
I love Ryu So far at first doing the comands where kinda weird but now they come natural and his Down b cancel air dash is incredible for mind games , recovering and geting in and out fast still need to practice and do combos with him and make the comands always work! :3
I agree with the Roy factor. And Ryu I love but has been very tricky to start off, red fireball is very useful for pushing opponents away and the air tats u is amazing for recovery from the side of the stage
The parry isn't just a sound effect. In Smash 4, when you go out of your shield, you have a bit of ending lag, unless you shield grab. When Ryu powershields, though, he has absolutely no lag, which means he can counter-attack instantly.
I wanna know what a NeoGeo Pocket Color pro thinks of Ryu as his tap/hold for weak/mediums is how things worked on the NGPC. Beyond that, SUPER pleased they put SO much effort into him. Hurricane Kicks are what botch the input system but it is super cool that technically you can play One Button Ryu. Beyond that my biggest gripe is the colors. I know a LOT of folks wanted a Ken color and me personally, I wanted Red Hair SF1 Ryu. Ah well, character is so fun to play I can't not get him (was playing at a friend's house).
Having a lot of fun with Ryu overall, no problems getting out the command specials on my end (personally I actually find them a lot easier on a Pro Controller as opposed to a GC controller). I can't believe how much effort they put into giving him a completely unique playstyle to preserve as much of his fighting style from the SF games as possible and they did a great job of it (a few things that are annoying... mainly not being able to turn round and do a command fireballs because you get a tatsumaki going the wrong direction). That said, as much fun as I had messing around with him I don't think he's going to be a very strong character in high level play; his normals feel like they all have extremely short range compared to a lot of the cast and he doesn't have great mobility options meaning he has to take a lot of risks to get into the ranges where he's most effective, and most of his aerial moves seem really punishable and also lack range meaning he's succeptible to getting anti-aired and often loses air-to-air. Ryu mirrors, along with a handful of other match-ups are really fun to play but I really feel like a good portion of the cast beats him pretty convincingly so can be frustrating to play. So yeah, overall an amazing addition for casual play and I'm super happy that he's in the game but I don't expect to see a whole lot of him at tournaments, etc.
Ryu is a ton of fun once you learn his inputs and combos.. he is an amazing character with so much depth.. though i play Roy more than Ryu as i love Roy way too much since his return but i have been practicing his attacks moves, and mixing up recoveries so you dont rely on Hurricane Kick too much as it makes you a little open for attacks, Down B into dash in mid air is perfect as you can take a hit and dash out of it instantly giving you more options for a Up B from underneath, but keep in mind it doesnt sweetspot if you are close to the edge, a little further down and you will but if they shield and you land on the platform expect a Forward smash
+Maximilian Dood, Ryu is such a fun character. He works just the way I thought he should. You know he can ignore counters due to his ability of cancelling attacks. Pretty interesting. Wished they put in Ken and or Evil Ryu.
U ever played a game kalled arcane heart? I hurd arcane heart 3 has a tough boss rush, maybe u should try that boss rush out and see how difficult it really is, I hurd it is really difficult, and is ryu a guest character for smash or is he here to stay ?
Ryu motions definitely take getting used to, but once you do learn them, they feel very fluid. Also, Air Focus Attacks give Ryu an air dash with FADC. Something he didn't even have in Marvel ;)
You had trouble with the motions for the special moves? Really? After a bit of time I found them to be quite easy to pull off. Granted the Shoryuken is still tricky at times, particularly when I want to go into it after a FADC, but I'm not having trouble with direction. I feel like Ryu deals too much damage with each individual hit since his style revolves around SF-esque combos, so I think he'll be nerfed in that regard in a patch down the line.
Hey man, we know they can do it because they've done it before, but honestly the colors should be way better, there's no solid red or green colors to choose from. Nintendo could make a killing off of dlc costumes for the characters, and project m does it for free so nintendo honestly doesn't have an excuse
I would like to see Nathan Graves from Castlevania Circle of the Moon with his special card abilities and his classic vampire hunting equipment in this game.
Thanks, watching this vid taught me to use those side moves as recovery as I used to despise them for falling off the screen on small levels. I may give this another try given the price drop
See as a smash player fist and a sf player second, I didn't really find the command specials all that hard to preform; though I definitely had an issue with the whole facing the right direction thing. My main issue was my movement on the stick was accidentally creating QCF or QCB motions. Throwing out a random hurricane kick totally messes me up. I also find the dragon punch isn't as effective as say Mega Mans up tilt or Luigi's Up B, but it has less ending lag so I guess that's the trade off.
I think trying to land the actual combos themselve are hard to do because of how small the hitboxes are. I know it's Ryu in smash and it has to be represented in a way like that while keeping his character, but you'd think they would accommodate for all the fast pace movement that happens in smash. They should just make the hitboxed just a little bit bigger so you're not wiffing right in the middle of a combo or missing the chance to combo because characters like sonic can just run right up to ryu and spin dash all day and the armor for focus attack wont work. You pretty much have to hadouken and occasionally a good read shoryuken the whole match and that's not fun. I do feel he's one of the better characters in the game but if they just adjusted the hitboxes for his combo moves, they would make him feel even better. Just my opinion. People might think it's easy but from what I've got from him, Ryu has a great move set and balancing but with the lack of his combos being the main thing you want to do with him, which is what you would want to do with a character to begin with, it makes him feel a little lacking in certain matchups
I'm surprised how much I like and how well I can use him. Is Max a fire emblem fan? I know he's not interested in mewtwo or Lucas because he's not really into their games but he seems to have a thing for the fire emblem characters.
Downloaded Ryu and on 3DS and put a few matches under me. The damage potential is nuts (FADC into a full input Shoryuken can KO stupidly early), but his combos seem fiddly. The game seems to have a hard time differentiating a light from a medium without just mashing the button. Inputting attack commands with a 3DS analog nub is a nightmare, and trying to do it for Tatsumaki or Shakunetsu can be weird to adjust to since characters don't automatically face each other. But I can see people just going full Street Fighter ham on opponents with him.
I have a lot of problems on 3DS with executing empowered side specials as far as recovery goes and I have yet to even execute a proper empowered up special x.x It's really hard on the 3DS analog, at least starting out.
Im more curious what roy is like, because If im not mistake roy wasnt in Brawl, and they instead gave his moveset (kinda) to Ike, and I loved playing as Roy and Ike in melee and SB4 respectively so Im curious what Roy is like now, or if hes just a palette swap like marth and lucina
KurriZSS As my friend Shadow-Factor described him to me, he's like a mix-up of Marth and Ike. Not to fast, not too slow. Not too powerful, but not very weak.
He's pretty good. I'm not sure if he is "top tier" because of all the technical stuff, but he's fun and it feels rewarding to play. It justifies the money, and mastering him will feel like an accomplishment.
i like ryu, i've never played a street fighter game, but him as a smash character is amazing. me and my friend would fight ryu vs little mac (which is a fun match btw) so they do almost the same damage if you can pull off moves in the correct order and if you do fight someone with a counter (like little mac's and marths down-b) just grab them when they are in that state and you should be fine. all in all, ryu is a crazy character and i love him so, so much
What I've noticed is doing the inputs on the GameCube controller had been difficult for me but using the 3DS circle pad after a few rounds I got the specials every single time without messing up. I'm gonna try the pro controller on Wii u.
I think that once we get some high-level Ryu players at tournaments, Ryu is going to become a high-tier character. He has a larger amount of tools than the more traditional smash bros characters.
here's a tip if you want to use hadouken (the original button one) while running, before using it push back to the way you're running then you will break and look at the other direction, in this position now do the red hadouken
My RYU experience has always been amazing at 1st! when i first heard of the Character i thought it was complete "BS" but after seeing the trailor i definitely got the character dlc and let me tell you i've been using RYU for over 14years of any game you can think of, and yes i'm a RYU Fan. his character trait is always been the Best in the series, hell he's undefeated no matter where he goes!! and i've seen REAL! RYU Players as him and they are the best when it comes to using the character the right way, me? i'm still getting use to the controls for RYU. but i do have replays and i was thinking of uploading them to my youtube channel XD
Well, here's the thing: if you cannot or don't want to use the SF inputs for the special moves, pressing and holding the B buttons get the job done pretty good. It's just for VERY dedicated SF fans out there ;)
videogameprof They are, but... they're not mandatory. If you can't do special moves in a fighting game, you're screwed big time. Here, not to much :P So you don't get the strongest versions, but pretty sure you can win using the weak and medium speicals without much of a problem.
chrisall76 AirLancer Spiral Rhapsody and I'm not gonna hold them back from doing so. I might hate them and be jealous because they're better than me at doing it, but that's beside the point :P
His imputs are tricky and challenging but fun at the same time, and it also makes me wish the other characters had similar moves like Mario for example, either tapping A or holding the button....
I'm so glad to hear some Roy love on RUclips now that he's out. I feel that his buff makes him an ideal choice over Ike if people aren't too fond of Marth (Though between you and me, Nintendo should have put Ryoma or Marx from Fire Emblem If the same way Roy was plopped into Melee to promote a new game.) As for Ryu, he's good for me to mess around with and I'd like to get better with him with time. I'm more excited for Street Fighter V Ryu than Smash Ryu though. Sad I don't see the Ken color scheme in there though.
huh . . .thats strange, it says "Comments dissabled" on my phone and yet here . . . oh well- Ryu is a character that cant be learned on day one, nuff said. a very advance character like Little Mac
Ryu is a very tech heavy character. He's hurting in matches against Little mac and pikachu but does wonders against other lights and a few heavies. Command SRK Is a KILLER and it makes people rethink their Air game entirely. FE will get stomped any one agressively moving in air testing Ryu's reactions WILL get hit. FADC;s in air make Ryu's revenge game alot easier as when coming back from a verticl launch you can Focus-> Abosrb hit-> DC-> and be in line for a proper SRK set up. Hadouken is a solid tool for zoning but currently is lackluster in that it can be punched away. Tatsu is solid but punishable, use wisely down tilt is a HUge opener, and should be used for most of your footsies. Focus Attacks DO NOT trigger Counters (other than Peach I believe?) So ALL of FE and Shulk will B punished for Counter fishing. To recover successfully from up High you do.... FADC-> Tatsu-> double Jump-> UpB if NEEDED. This can be performed from Low recovery as well but inputs must be cleaner on FADC Good luck Max.
As someone who can't combo at all, I still like Ryu's flexibility. Enemy too far away? Throw a hadoken and then go in. Opponent using single, heavy hits? Hit em with focus attack into shoryuken, easy damage. Nice jump ins, utility tilts (although a lot weaker kill power wise), and pretty decent (although predictable) recovery. Also, Roy is a HUGE pain to fight (online) right now with that stupid down throw hoo hah. Not sure how to escape it at low percentages, and like everything is super low in recovery. Or maybe I'm just bad.
I thought I wouldn't like Ryu at first, but he's FREAKING AWESOME. Definitely hard to play, but very rewarding. A little disappointed that there's no Evil Ryu costume, or even costumes in homage to Ken/Akuma/Dan/Sakura and the other shotos
When's Daigo? My opinions on his inclusion aside, he is a wonderfully crafted character and I feel more attention to detail was given to him than the Blue Bomber. From the way he fights to the way he moves. I don't think he's going to dominate Smash but he will give casual players on For Glory a run for their money.
The first time I finally managed to pull of the Ryu combo shown in the trailer I felt like a god XD

A regular Shoryuken kills Ryu at ~135%
A dragon punch input Shoryuken kills Ryu at ~95%
GroundPoundable I've more often than not done tatsu motion but hit b/a too fast and got focus. So yeah...
GroundPoundable Not to mention u couldn't even do these inputs at all if ur facing away from the ledge...
Love Ryu! But, I can't help forgetting this is Smash and not Street Fighter and I should stop attempting some bread and butter combos with him and play him as a Smash Bros character.
Try MVC combos

....Am I not welcome here?
I'll see myself out.......
Loving him. He definitely has top-tier potential.
Really loving smash right now, Roy and Ryu are super hype!
im the only one that wants a full game with the Marvel vs capcom roster in a SSB style?
Dreamcast Spirit Both are great ideas!
*****
license? Playstation all star didnt seem to need it
Mega Bichi PSASBR Doesn't have Marvel in it.
Vorpal Blade
if that game had marvel, i wouldnt be asking for a game, would i?
Not you're not!

PlayerEssence Idrc about Roy,

Roy is for melee fans.
Bizzare As much as i love Lucina as a character, i'm not too fond of her smash incarnation, not only is she far too tall, but i don't particularly love Marth's normals. Ike is love though.
***** i mainly like her because of awakening, other then that she's mediacore its more or less fanservice too like Roy and Mewtwo is to Melee players.
Bizzare I actually kind of hate melee, but i'm pretty hype about Mewtwo and Roy.
Right now, my biggest concern with Ryu in Smash is how fast my Analog stick is going to die. I play on the 3DS.
It handles amazing though. Love it!
I enjoy Ryu, he's a blast to play and I love the combos he kept from SF and how they translate flawlessly into smash.
For those who miss Street fighter 4, itll live on in smash with ryus focus cancel
I've had an absolute blast playing Ryu. As a hardcore Smash player, and a Street Fighter enthusiast since I was 2, this really is awesome for me! I want to use the other DLC characters, but Ryu's too damn awesome!

***** yeah, it took me awhile to practice going back to neutral position before doing bair or fair
That does it ! Smash bros 4 really sold the Wii U to me, I'll have to go get one ASAP. As always, great vids Max !
So far I love Ryu a lot, I like the variability and the attention to detail they've done. I'm not a very big fightan guy, but the special inputs feel good and I'm sure I'll get better with practice.

Quarter circle, focus attack, neutral special, quarter circle, half circle, killed opponent, "TALK IS CHEAP!"
NOTE: I was just putting in inputs at random and somehow i was able to get a good amount of SF inputs. I would never be able to legitimately replicate this since i was being a little shit.
Fucking Ryu man.
MAx, do you have a react video for Ryu's ?
Can you cancel specials with focus attack like EX CANCEL in SFIV?
***** Donkey Kong Country 2 was one of my first games so i kind of like him. I liked Dixie more though because she was more useful imo.
***** That's why I like Diddy: he's a monkey.
He's also an aerial fighter, and characters that are most at home in the air are the ones I usually play. I main Zero Suit Samus.
Benny Too bad Luigi is still better than Roy
same here benny i played the hell out of DKC2 when i was like 7 so diddy grew on me
I love Ryu So far at first doing the comands where kinda weird but now they come natural and his Down b cancel air dash is incredible for mind games , recovering and geting in and out fast still need to practice and do combos with him and make the comands always work! :3
There's an audio cue for Ryu's enhanced (EX?) specials in that he shouts their names a bit harder.
I love Ryu in this game. So much.
It's interesting to see him in this kind of game away from what he's usually in. He brings a unique play style.
Does Ryu only have one set of special attacks like Mewtwo? Also can you execute a Final Smash based on the command inputs for super arts?
+Maximilian Dood, Ryu is such a fun character. He works just the way I thought he should. You know he can ignore counters due to his ability of cancelling attacks. Pretty interesting. Wished they put in Ken and or Evil Ryu.
wasn't aware you played sm4sh maxy boy, didn't know i could love you even more
U ever played a game kalled arcane heart?
WaywardWind911 the most ive been able to do in a combo is 30% give or take a couple. thats when using command shoryuken though.
2:52 is the same problem I was having with real matches. Trying to do combos facing the right way using inputs
I want Chun-Li to come out just so I can Daigo parry her
Why no ken skin?
oboistas1 Yeah I would've love it if he had alternates for Ken, Akuma, Dan, and Sean.
Yeah and it also sucks that his alt colors are worse than in his actually games
oboistas1 So they can milk it with more downloads. Expect Ken, Akuma, Dan, Sean and maybe another clone like the Sheng Long joke from the 90s.
PRL 412 Its a lot of work to design other alternates, especially changing the voice.
Hey man, we know they can do it because they've done it before, but honestly the colors should be way better, there's no solid red or green colors to choose from.
Nintendo could make a killing off of dlc costumes for the characters, and project m does it for free so nintendo honestly doesn't have an excuse
max are you planning make anything related to a assist me of smash of Ryu ? will be cool. aswell keep on rocking man
I would like to see Nathan Graves from Castlevania Circle of the Moon with his special card abilities and his classic vampire hunting equipment in this game.
Thanks, watching this vid taught me to use those side moves as recovery as I used to despise them for falling off the screen on small levels. I may give this another try given the price drop
My only problem whit Ryu is when i change to another character like Mario and i try to make the fireball like the hadouken, then the cape came out...
Ryu´s background should be used in Street Fighter 5. simply AMAZING recreation of the original sf2 bg
I love Ryu and since I usually main Shotos I was feeling right at home.
I'm surprised how much I like and how well I can use him. Is Max a fire emblem fan? I know he's not interested in mewtwo or Lucas because he's not really into their games but he seems to have a thing for the fire emblem characters.
With the down b you can actually cancel it like you would on the ground by tapping right or left twice. Just felt like you should know max.
Sergeant Cyndaquil You probably found out already, but no, he's not a palette swap of Marth/Lucina at all, he's much better.
KurriZSS As my friend Shadow-Factor described him to me, he's like a mix-up of Marth and Ike. Not to fast, not too slow. Not too powerful, but not very weak.
For the record for people who wanma play Ryu:
You CAN use his focus attack to recover, you can still airdash out of it midair for some extra distance.
is there any coverage of other party games like wii sports or Buzz! Quiz World?
He's pretty good. I'm not sure if he is "top tier" because of all the technical stuff, but he's fun and it feels rewarding to play. It justifies the money, and mastering him will feel like an accomplishment.
i like ryu, i've never played a street fighter game, but him as a smash character is amazing. me and my friend would fight ryu vs little mac (which is a fun match btw) so they do almost the same damage if you can pull off moves in the correct order and if you do fight someone with a counter (like little mac's and marths down-b) just grab them when they are in that state and you should be fine. all in all, ryu is a crazy character and i love him so, so much
so does this make Smash a REAL fighting game
Dre Riggins Only if it's two player, no items, Ryu only, and final destination with HP instead of lives.
Dre Riggins nah, it just makes Street Fighter a party game :P
Dre Riggins it already was
Dre Riggins nope
Dre Riggins It's on it's way.
What I've noticed is doing the inputs on the GameCube controller had been difficult for me but using the 3DS circle pad after a few rounds I got the specials every single time without messing up. I'm gonna try the pro controller on Wii u.
wiiownsps3and360 i havent tried on a stick, becuase no wiiu, but i can verify that it is indeed pretty easy to do with the circle pad.
wiiownsps3and360 It's tough on the Gamecube because of the edges. It is SO much easier on the Wii U Pro Controller
I think that once we get some high-level Ryu players at tournaments, Ryu is going to become a high-tier character. He has a larger amount of tools than the more traditional smash bros characters.
here's a tip if you want to use hadouken (the original button one) while running, before using it push back to the way you're running then you will break and look at the other direction, in this position now do the red hadouken
to the original direction
Half circle forward
I wonder if he would work well with a modded Fight Stick?
Well, here's the thing: if you cannot or don't want to use the SF inputs for the special moves, pressing and holding the B buttons get the job done pretty good.
It's just for VERY dedicated SF fans out there ;)
MrJechgo command moves are enhanced. twould be more benificial for the player to practice the commands.
videogameprof They are, but... they're not mandatory.
If you can't do special moves in a fighting game, you're screwed big time. Here, not to much :P
So you don't get the strongest versions, but pretty sure you can win using the weak and medium speicals without much of a problem.
MrJechgo shoryuken becomes the best punish in the game when doing the traditional SF input
chrisall76 AirLancer Spiral Rhapsody and I'm not gonna hold them back from doing so. I might hate them and be jealous because they're better than me at doing it, but that's beside the point :P
Max can we get a Assist Me video for Ryu on smash bros.
Ryu is an all around great character
I main with sonic, does any1 know if max does any sonic videos like guides or anything?
Brandon Ariy go to smashboards they have Plenty of that
Max, you NEED to do 9.0 with Ryu. I would love to see you do that.
Hats off to Capcom for letting Ryu be in the game.
His imputs are tricky and challenging but fun at the same time, and it also makes me wish the other characters had similar moves like Mario for example, either tapping A or holding the button....
n1hondude Careful, people will start screaming about how Smash is getting too complicated...
So are we going to see more street fighter characters in the future that would be cool
I'm so glad to hear some Roy love on RUclips now that he's out. I feel that his buff makes him an ideal choice over Ike if people aren't too fond of Marth (Though between you and me, Nintendo should have put Ryoma or Marx from Fire Emblem If the same way Roy was plopped into Melee to promote a new game.)
As for Ryu, he's good for me to mess around with and I'd like to get better with him with time. I'm more excited for Street Fighter V Ryu than Smash Ryu though. Sad I don't see the Ken color scheme in there though.
my new smash main
i wish u could use dpad on gcc or the pro controller
huh . . .thats strange, it says "Comments dissabled" on my phone and yet here . . .
oh well- Ryu is a character that cant be learned on day one, nuff said. a very advance character like Little Mac
focus attack is able to dash cancel out of the air.
Tatsu is solid but punishable, use wisely
down tilt is a HUge opener, and should be used for most of your footsies.
Focus Attacks DO NOT trigger Counters (other than Peach I believe?) So ALL of FE and Shulk will B punished for Counter fishing.
To recover successfully from up High you do....
FADC-> Tatsu-> double Jump-> UpB if NEEDED.
This can be performed from Low recovery as well but inputs must be cleaner on FADC
Good luck Max.
Can't wait for that Boss Rage with Ryu. :)
Ryu is so good in this game! And not complicated to use remember!
Street Fighter meets Power Stone?! You had me at Power Stone! :D
Might be my new fav character.
Here is some important advice, DONT use a gamepad
I thought I wouldn't like Ryu at first, but he's FREAKING AWESOME. Definitely hard to play, but very rewarding.
A little disappointed that there's no Evil Ryu costume, or even costumes in homage to Ken/Akuma/Dan/Sakura and the other shotos
Anyone else wanna see him re-do Boss Rage for the Wii U version, against the Master Fortress?
When's Daigo?
My opinions on his inclusion aside, he is a wonderfully crafted character and I feel more attention to detail was given to him than the Blue Bomber. From the way he fights to the way he moves. I don't think he's going to dominate Smash but he will give casual players on For Glory a run for their money.
How do you change his voice to Japanese?
Ryu is one of my mains now. Plus, want to smash sometime soon? I always wanted to play against a famous RUclipsr.
"Fireball... Hurricane Kick... and Uppercut."
Me: "Hadouken, Tatsumiku Ukinaki, Shoryuken."
