Linksys routers are great although they are kind of limited by the software but you can install openwrt very easily, but those E8450 models can be bricked rather easily with a simple power loss.
I'm glad you show videos for, what some say, are simple things. Thank you. Unfortunately my cable system has a modem/router built into the cable box, so this isn't an option for me right now. I don't even know how to change the router name or password. Cable company gave it to me. My speeds are 6.1mbps download and 1.8mbps upload. Your speeds are amazing. I've never even hit 20, EVER. My max is 1gig. Obviously nowhere near that number. Cable said it must be my location. I live in a very small space. I know I'm getting screwed but I don't have patience to talk to them anymore (after 20+ calls)
I really appreciate your videos. Is there any way you can do an option video on router/WAP combos? I have a new construction pre-wired for something like ubiquity with WAPs in the ceiling so I don't see the point on having a traditional router when it'll be stuffed into my bedroom closet box, but I also don't need something as massive or feature intensive as the UDM pro. Would love any suggestions or any other options.
Glad you enjoy my video! I have a Netgear WAX630 AP in the center of my home. That AP is connected to my PoE Swith. The PoE switch is connected to my router. This setup works well because some IoT devices only use the 2.4 Ghz band and will not connect to the AP. So having the traditional router works well for your wired network and for an additional wireless option. I recommend a mid range router for your situation. Then buy a 8 port Layer 2 PoE managed switch your APs. Hope this helps. By the way I have probably 100 Home Networking Videos and I cover WAPs and Mesh and routers. Make sure to check them out. Thank you for watching and keep me posted.
Looks like my E9450 has bit the dust. I changed out my cable modem to a Netgear One and registered with my ISP. I can get out on the Internet if I connect directly to the modem. However, my E9450 won't pick up an ip address from the WAN side. In the menu screen everything is listed as Not Available. Release/renew does nothing. Trying to reset factory defaults doesn't work either. Usually when these devices fail, they fail catastrophically. This is a simple incorrect operation problem. Router turns on, all my settings are saved but cannot be dumped. No IP or DNS information can be picked up from the cable modem. I bought it refurbished about 18 months ago.
Wizard won't start. I pressed the reset button for 10 seconds but all my information is still there and wizard won't start. I have Not Available for all my IPv4 and v6 info. What do you do in this case then it won't go back to factory defaults and you can't get a wizard going to reconfigure the device to pick up information from the modem? That's the problem with refurbished, reconditioned or renewed items; they may turn on and operate but not function correctly. That's why they were sent back to the store. Those problems don't manifest themselves until some time down the road and although the lights turn on the device is useless.
I have an older Linksys router I can swap out and see if I can connect to the modem. If I connect the RJ-45 from my computer directly to the Netgear modem I get out to the Internet. However when I go through the E9450 it can't see my modem. Changed cables 3 times. Maybe bad jack on router. It's in the yellow one to go to cable modem.
Sounds like its a bad router. Here are my recommended routers at all different price points. ruclips.net/video/c5R_HAkKRO0/видео.html Good luck and keep me posted.
Well… for example. A few years ago I was living somewhere where I didn’t have WiFi… but I had an old router. So used my router as a repeater to connect to one of my neighbor’s WiFi since it was not protected. I don’t know whose WiFi it was but I was using it. I didn’t want to lose my new found free WiFi, so I logged into their router which also wasn’t protected and I optimized all their setting for better performance but then I also locked them out of their own router using my user name and password so they could not go in and change my settings and lock me out of it. I doubt they would know how to since it wasn’t even protected to begin with. They still had access to their wifi and I happily used their unprotected WiFi for a good 2-3 years until one day the network was gone. I suppose they updated their WiFi system and got newer stuff. But it was fun while it lasted. Saved me a bit of money not having to pay for my own WiFi.
