"Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists." --Yuri Orlov, _Lord of War_ (2005)
The scene in that movie where they are standing inside a room full of AK-47s in Eastern Europe... those are REAL AK-47s. The film crew found out that buying a lot of real AK-47s in Easter Europe for the movie set was actually cheaper than getting fake props from Hollywood.
"Of all the weapons in the Soviet arsenal nothing was as profitable as the Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947, better known as the AK-47 or Kalashnikov. Its the world's most popular assault rifle, a weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat, it will shoot if it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy a child could use it...... and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin, Mozambique put the gun on their flag. Since the end of the cold war the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's number 1 export, after that comes vodka, caviar and suicidal novelists. One things for sure though, no one was lining up to buy their cars."
Funny thing about the AK47 is that actual AK47s are pretty rare today. If you were to find an actual, honest to Kalashnikov himself factory-"new" AK47, you could get rich selling that off. Majority of the 7.62mm AKs you find in the hands of irregulars and really elsewhere, are AKMs, which was the variant of the AK that was mass produced at absurdly high numbers for the Soviet armed forces.
But the best use of the AK is in the Romanian revolution where the people mowed down their filthy communist rulers in the courtyard of their capital building.

I took about an hour out of my life by writing the script to a 10 minute video to share in a Discord server. Thought I'd share my work. *Script:* What could be more iconic than the Kalashnikov? Rough-hewn from wood and iron, it's simple construction belies an enduring example of industrial design. It's the weapon of choice for a revolution, and the backbone of any insurgancy. So, what makes the AK so special? Why is a near 70 year old rifle still so popular? And is there really no substitute? The legendary rifle's story starts in Soviet Russia, in the embers of World War 2. This was an era of rapid technological progress amidst valiant acts - and the Soviet Union loved a hero. Mikhail Kalashnikov was a tanker in the Red Army, wounded in action in 1941. During his recuperation he learned of his comrade's woes with their issued rifles - and resulted to tackle them with a soldier-focused approach to small arms design; with innate usability borne from simplicity and reliable function. His early designs caught the eye of officials, and Kalashnikov found himself part of a small arms development group for the Red Army. The Soviets were not shy to take influence from what other forces were fielding - and between captured Nazi weapons, Allied supplies - and a long line of Russian prototypes - the AK-47 began to take shape. The German Sturmgewehr 44 was a major influence: with similar form factor, it proved the viability of a mid-power cartridge - and provided the gas system for Kalashnikov's design. The earlier RPD would also lend the intermediate cartridge to the AK-47: the 7.62x39mm round, also known as the M43. It's slightly tapered casing is responsible for giving the AK-47 it's distinctive curved magazine. In demonstrations, the 1947 prototype outperformed any rival, and was readily adopted by the Russians - although initial manufacturing issues did slow down deployment. These issues we're remedied by 1959, when a modernized version was introduced: known as the AKM. It replaced the milled receiver with a stamped metal one - both lighter and easier to produce, and was also equipped with a muzzle brake to improve the accuracy of automatic fire. There were a large number of variants of this basic design: from the AKS, with a folding stock; to a large number of foreign-produced AK pattern rifles, such as the Chinese Type 56; Hungarian AMD-65 or the Finnish Rk 62. The smaller caliber AK-74 emerged in 1975 - firing the lighter but higher velocity 5.54x39mm round: with greater wounding potential versus the older round, the AK-74 would supplement and eventually replaced the AKM in service. Pair these variants with such a broad service history, and you have a recipe for a very popular weapon indeed. There have been more Kalashnikov-pattern rifles made than all other assault rifles combined - in fact, of all the small arms that exist: 1 in 5 is an AK. It's utterly ubiquitous: found in every corner of the globe - and such is its influence, it even adorns the flag of Mozambique. No surprise, then, that the AK-47 is as popular in video games as it is with real life: with perhaps as many digital renditions as those stamped from steel. It's so well known that most instances - regardless of variant - are labeled as the 'AK-47', without fear of license rights: only the most cautious opting to use ersatz appellations, such as Goldeneye's 'KF-7 Soviet' or the 'CV-47' in earlier Counter-Strike games. These virtual depictions reflect the rifle's design in a variety of ways: but there's no mistaking the familiar characteristics of the AK. Often, a weapon's identity is forged by the powers that wield it: and with its prominent use by the Second World during the Cold War, the AK has come to symbolize the defiance and might of those who would oppose the west. It's the foil to the American M16, and the weapon of choice for any opposing force: and for that reason it's often the default option for the 'bad guys' in games that mirror any recent conflict. In some cases, like Counter-Strike, the AK is only available to the terrorist forces: and here it has prime placement, being the top-tier automatic weapon on offer, alongside the Counter-Terrorist's M4. Perhaps it's by its association with untrained militia fighters, or just by affinity by design: but long bursts of automatic fire - spray and pray - seems a natural fit for the AK. It has perfectly good accuracy, and is more than capable of hitting targets within its effective range: but somehow the AK doesn't feel like a marksman's rifle. Luckily, the weapon is quite suited to sustained fire: and this is normally reflected within its depiction. The AK's rate of fire is fairly moderate, and while recoil is present it's still possible to wrest the weapon onto a close-up get target. It's not particularly elegant, nor great for ammo conservation - but you've got 30 changes to hit something, even if it's not what you were aiming at. Of course, it's not just enough to be capable of automatic fire - a weapon must also be able to dole out magazine after magazine without stoppage or fuss. Luckily, the AK's reliability is legendary: with loose tolerances, and as simple a mechanism as possible - there's not too much that can go wrong, and even less that can't be put right. This is one trait that doesn't transfer well to video games: malfunctions are seldom shown, as firearm maintenance isn't a particularly exciting endeavor - and experiencing a feed failure mid-firefight would only prove frustrating. Some games do reflect these factors, however - perhaps most notably Far Cry 2, with scavenged weapons proving much less reliable than those bought brand new. Weapon condition is also a factor in some RPGs, such as in Fallout 3: but a poorly-kept weapon suffers only in the damage stakes, rather than with any interruption. It's this reliability and simplicity that gives the weapon much of its charm - other weapons might be more high-tech, but that does you no good if it chokes in dusty environments. It's seems also sacrilegious to tamper with the purity of the AK - strapping anything superfluous to the weapon is an insult to the design principles of Kalashnikov. Some games do let you customize your AK-47 with a variety of attachments: optics, suppressors, and garish paint jobs. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had the right idea, as equipping a red-dot sight would harm the AK-47's long range damage, meaning the most sensible choice was just a plain rifle with iron sights. Remember: just because you can... doesn't mean you should. Of course, if you're some tin-pot dictator of some far-flung land you can generally do whatever you like - and this extends to having your favourite rifle gold-plated. Although such weapons are ornamental, and clearly not designed for the rigors of battle, some games do feature golden guns. Some represent the pinnacle of accomplishment with the weapon, a reward for the completion of challenges: while others just represent an absence of good taste. So, the AK-47. The very best there is. From drug lords to peasent rebellions, the AK is everyone's favourite weapon: a great equalizer, irrespective of wealth or status. It's not the most accurate weapon, nor the most elegant - but it simply doesn't have to be. It's good enough. It excels where fighters need it most: it's reliable. Stoppages are rare, and any faults that do occur can probably be fixed with a hammer. It's simple to use. There's no need to pore over a manual, the AK is point and shoot. It's so simple a child can use it - and in some parts of the world, they often do. It's cheap. Easy to manufacture and even easier to acquire - if you're looking to arm an insurrection on a budget, no other rifle will come close. It is an old weapon, but it's not yet outdated: at the end of World War 2, it was cutting edge - and led the way for the rise of the assault rifles during the 20th Century. Today, although not quite as high-tech as some infantry weapons, the AK-47 still performs its duty: and with 100 million rifles in existence, it's popularity is unlikely to evaporate any time soon. With it's widespread use and low cost, the weapon can be counted alongside the most basic of tools: The hammer; The sickle; The AK-47.
I was around 7-8 years old. I used to play COD: Modern Warfare. It was the mission after the assassination of Zakhaev's arm. McMillan was just sitting there, I was so close to extraction. I saw all the AKs on the ground. I had never properly known the name of a weapon before. "Oh hey, it's a gun. Name? I don't care.". But seeing all the AKs around, I couldn't help but know their names. AK-47. AK-47. AK-47. Soon, I was able to differentiate an american - used rifle (M16, AR-15, M4A1, SCAR FAMILY) from an AK-47. Funny thing, I didn't even know it was such a common weapon. Just a bad guy rifle, designed from fiction. Doesn't exist. Welp, I was pretty wrong.
Dante Planeta how so? The 7.62x39 has killed more people than any other bullet in times of war. Its nice knowing if i needed to defend myself that my ak can leave plenty of big holes in them lol. Btw the rounds are extremely cheap which is why i also prefer aks over any other rifle
The ak has a piston driven system similar to the STG but the way the bolt unlocks is more in line to the M1 Garand. the ak has a tilting bolt for unlock whereas the STG has a "claw pick up" style system. The only thing that is "taken" from the STG is the viability of an intermediate cartridge.
This is a feature of many languages. Complex words made with smaller ones. Take the Hindi word for university, "Vishwavidyalay". It literally means "Worldknowledgehome".
He'd probably also not be appreciative of the fact that everyone thinks its based on the Sturmgewehr when its really functionality wise closer to a Garand.
7:50 If my memory is correct, golden guns in real life are seldom plated with gold- Generally, a nickel-titanium alloy is used, which is both more durable and smoother than the original steel.

XboxAhoy Oh Yeah I knew that, just thought since you mentioned that variant in the video. Can't wait for the Metro videos by the way;) I tried creating some myself, but it's not up to standard :p

+Ahoy To be fair STALKER does not have any AK-47s either... Hmm... wait the Trophy AK in Clear Sky... maybe that is why you used that in the video but the clip was from Call of Pripyat.
You forgot that it was made for the simple untrained soldier. Unlike most rifles it was not suited for ranges above 400m as the Russian soldier would never hit something above that range. Also the Mode selector is like this: safety, Full auto, semi auto. This is due to the following reason: When in a fire fight the soldier would simply slam the safety off and don’t think about its position. Just push it all the way trough and pull the trigger until the weapon stops shooting. Now it’s bad to have an empty mag before the fight began so they put semi auto at the last position. Resulting in firing only one bullet and giving the soldier time to think. Also the incredible reliability makes it perfect for war. Never jams. Does not need excessive cleaning. And works in almost all condition
The AK is actually accurate but being very accurate or even the soldier being able to shoot at ranges over 400 meters is pretty useless as you aren't supposed to shoot at such ranges and most firefights happen in well below 100 meter ranges. And I don't know where you heard the shit you heard but I was trained with AK variant and we were trained to use single shots at all times except very special cases like CQC and if ambushing tightly packed enemy.
I really like how well-written and professional his scripts are.

What could be more iconic than the Kalashnikov?

Drug lords to peasant rebels post WW2, so French Revolution is not counted.
yes
Fraternite, eqalite & ak
I'm not sure if that would have made the French Revolution more or less chaotic.
@@govinlock8568 mafioso from Italy bring it back to French revolution using time travel and sell them to the peasant
I've heard stories about AK's dug up from battlefields in Vietnam, years after the war.
Supposedly, you could fire it right after you dug it out.
A marine was shooting in the hills of California pulled one out of storage a couple decades, kicked open the bolt slapped a magazine in a it emptied every one with out problem, I bought a clone one it fired a bad surplus round it had a catastrophic failure and the casing blew in the mechanism it fired it ejected it and loaded the next round with no hiccup

Your videos are so good. Never thought I would watch videos about firearms haha.
This man could make watching paint dry a documentary
Blacck0ut17 he could stare at water for a week and make it interesting
oteri okolo most likely
As we see, the statistic of the paint drying out is very slow and a process that must be under view at all times. Depending on the brush we used it will impact the look of the paint and time of the drying.
SIX EPISODES?!? That's far too few!!! But still stu, glad to see you're still here, the best weapon reviews and firearm histories ever :D

Seeing an AK-47 with a scope looks weird
i agree, probably because it wasnt designed to have one.
Its an automatic rifle, the recoil control is shit and i dont think bipods could be attached to ak’s
thats why the dragunov exists
@@Cbrmkn98xs yes bipods can be attached. The RPK literally has one.
@@xXx_Oshino_xXx i dont think AKs are supposed to have bipods
Suprised you didn't use any footage from Metro Last Light since it's pretty much as close to a spiritual successor to S.T.A.L.K.E.R as you are going to get, oh and since you are also working on a video for it.
Metro doesn't have any AK-47s - only the 74!
I tried to stick to depictions of the AK-47/AKM except for some illustrative purposes. I may yet do a separate episode on the later AK variants.
XboxAhoy Oh Yeah I knew that, just thought since you mentioned that variant in the video. Can't wait for the Metro videos by the way;) I tried creating some myself, but it's not up to standard :p
Joe Mc'Laughlin I am grateful, when did it ever seem like I wasn't? Because I said that I knew the gun in game was an AK-74?
Joe Mc'Laughlin Literally the most useless response ever. Somebody asked, somebody answered, the asker replied... is he not aloud too? Bloody hell, conversations with you would be dull if you can't comment on answers.
+Ahoy
To be fair STALKER does not have any AK-47s either...
Hmm... wait the Trophy AK in Clear Sky... maybe that is why you used that in the video but the clip was from Call of Pripyat.
You forgot that it was made for the simple untrained soldier.
Unlike most rifles it was not suited for ranges above 400m as the Russian soldier would never hit something above that range.
Also the Mode selector is like this: safety, Full auto, semi auto.
This is due to the following reason:
When in a fire fight the soldier would simply slam the safety off and don’t think about its position.
It was actually the Germans who first concluded that and in general pretty common knowledge. In combat situations almost no soldier hits beyond 400m.
Almost no soldier would ever hit anything past 400m with an automatic rifle no matter what. Not just Russian soldiers.
@@chadthundercock4982 and on top of that i don't think firing at 400m would be something in basic training
More like it was made for S1mple
