Her parents were divorced when she was a kid, so he wasn't around much. Nothing special about him either, but I saw Candace's research on her genealogy, interesting stuff there.
In 1987 husband graduated with a masters degree in engineering and the starting salary was around $90k. Bought land and starter home for around $120. Eggs were around 40 cents a dozen.
2024. Son graduates with a masters degree in a stem field. Starting salary is $90k. Looking for a house to buy. Same size home in similar city, same state now costs between $320-420k with no land, just a small lot. Eggs are $4 per dozen. Same starting salary in similar field.
What's wrong with this picture? Our government is corrupt and incompetent.
I get where you are going but you are doing very much the same thing as the left. Trying to compare two different but similar situations with out taking into account many variables. 1) you just state STEM field for your son. STEM jobs vary drastically in starting salaries 2) in 1987 there were far fewer engineers with masters than there is today. Thus your husband had a much rarer skill set.
The eggs are fine to compare but there are too many variables for the rest of it to even remotely compare them.
What is a stem field? Just curious. It would be interested to compare what your husband's education cost with that of your son also. University costs are ridiculous now compared to to when I went, also in the late eighties. Tuition was maybe $3000 per semester then at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. It's 17k per semester now.

I've heard stories of college dropouts today getting their foot in the door in finance and retiring at 30. My dad had a bachelor's in education and owned two houses. Mom worked minimum wage when she felt like working. He left public education and worked at AB/Rockwell. I have 6 years in the Navy repairing radar and then a ABET bachelor's in electrical engineering. I'm working below my skill level, and when im not looking for a new job every three years, after child support, my finances allow me a two bedroom apartment in my 50's with no retirement savings. I'm a layoff away from living on the street. The system rewards snake oil salesmen at the moment. It rewards people who produce nothing of value. Eventually it will correct itself. My ex wants my HS age kids to go to college on loans. I'm against it on account of the liberal brainwashing and diplomas as valuable as the paper it's printed on.
