- Michael Cockerell presents the first in a four-part series with unparalleled access to the House of Commons, filmed over the course of a year.
We follow two relatively new female MPs - Charlotte Leslie and Sarah Champion - learning the ways of the House. We hear from those at the top of political tree including David Cameron and Ed Miliband, who reveal what happens at prime minister's questions, and we also see behind the scenes on budget day. We meet a maintenance team abseiling down the face of Big Ben and the gospel-singing tea lady Gladys who works in the members' tea room. We also follow the Commons' most powerful official, the clerk of the house Sir Robert Rogers, whose job is to keep the whole show on the road.
This series takes an unprecedented look at the heart of British democracy in the run up to the 2015 general election. Развлечения
only david cameron is posh enough to suggest that the palace of westminster "looks half like a school" lol
Yes, but he was wrong with his maths. Can't have 3 halves.
Not only Cameron. BoJo, Rees-Mogg, etc. etc.
Half of them went to the same school..... Eton.
It's always a joy to find a new Michael Cockerall documentary that I never knew about.
It was definitely Jacob Rees-Mogg who had the wooden sword hanging up in the cloakroom 😂
His constituency didn't start with "W," so it was someone else.
Rees-Mogg was not elected this week, so he's out.
He probably had pretend sword fights with Boris while having a brandy
What year was this 2014 not sure I know liberal democratic poor man had to resign was a,alcoholic and since died
@@myoldvhstapesYeah but this was filmed in 2015
@@user-lo5kj8im5d Yes, 2014-15.
Oh how much as changed in ten years since this aired. 2014 seems like a generation ago. We were in the EU. A coalition government in place and the queen on the throne.
12:21 - "it's half like a museum, half like a church, half like a school" - So David Cameron things you can have three halves. No wonder their budgets plunged us into the crapper.
3 halves
Labour might make it bad, but it was nothing like the span of Kwasi Kwarteng and Truss' mini-budget that absolutely tanked the country overnight.
@@joshuasmith6439 Well just over 30 days, though taking into account 10 days for the Monarchs mourning, but I get the point lol.
I thought exactly the same thing.
What a fascinating video ! Greetings from Texas. My 18th great-grandfather Sir Thomas Hungerford (1340-1397) was the first recorded Speaker of the House of Commons. Thank you for enlightening me in the hours immediately after a Labour Party victory... 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
We are doomed with the labour in lol and doomed with the Conservatives aswell
thats so cool!
@@cazzawazza9553 wahhhhh
That's so fantastic! You have history to be proud of!
in fairness that lady MP that fought for the admend of the law about kiddy fiddlers she be praised
I don't know about anything else, but there is an aspect of theatrical charm about the whole thing... And I love it....
Rather apt that I should come across this series after the recent election. 🙂
I did see a few 'ghosts' in it, considering how long ago it was filmed. RIP Charles Kennedy!
Seeing the faces after GE24 is quite interesting.
35:00 I just had to pause and re-watch the 1980 'Blue Peter' episode in which Peter Duncan joins the cleaners, without a harness, on a bosun's chair, and after about a minute of being told what better not to do ;-)
The whole training was something like:
- "This is your Bosun's chair."
- "Do I wear a harness?"
- "Nah. You don't need to. It's quite safe."
I can't thank you enough for uploading this. What a delight! I've been a huge Michael Cockerell fan for ages, as well as being a bit of a politics geek, so this look at the running of the House of Commons is a real treat.
04:24 "It's a bit like the Germans putting their towels on a beach chair" 🤣😆😘
Exactly my thinking when the narrator introduced this part.
Thank you for uploading this it’s one of my favourite series I had to purchase it on Apple ITunes but now I can finally share it with my friends and family
Lovely stuff. Thank you.
Glad they released these on RUclips, brilliant stuff
thanks so much for uploading! hard to find this series in watchable quality.
Very interesting thanks
As an American, I find it fascinating to see how the U.K. Parliament works.
It doesn't work.

Please upload the other episodes!
I can confirm that stuff is “invigorating” 😮😊
Oh David (Cameron) my dear, sweet Summer child... that's not what most schools look like. ...Imagining his expression if a time traveller sat him down and explained how utterly incompetent and catastrophic he would be for the country.
the caption says it was uploaded two weeks ago, end of JUne 24. The video however is ten years old, from '14.
Interesting to see how some of the issues being mentioned turned out. Like HS2. The extension to York was scrapped, so now a single line only reaches half the number of cities that initially were supposed to be connected.
Please upload all of the parts. This is an excellent documentary
" It's half like a museum, half like a church and half like a school. " ... no wonder from Cameron, May, Bojo, Truss, and Sunak only done the half job, lol😊...
Next series please 🙏
will you be uploading the second episode? this is great and would really like to see more if it's available anywhere :)
Only 5 minutes in and I had to stop to dive down the Fabricant WIG rabbit hole... He did not retain his seat!! That will be a nice relief for all of us... and for his 'hair', I expect.
My school didn’t look half or even a third like that, but Cameron’s school sure did.
The Hoyle felle would make a great speaker
Charlotte Leslie lost her seat in 2017. It’s now a very safe labour seat and her successor Darren Jones has a huge majority and in the Cabinet
54:12 Was that late member Rory Stewart?🤣
I think it was XD
Fantastic observation
42:09, that being said, Disraeli did supposedly say of Gladstone "If Gladstone fell into the Thames, that would be misfortune; and if anybody pulled him out, that, I suppose, would be a calamity." So, I think what they said was fine in comparison!
I don't think that I ever saw Sunak answer a PMQ properly once!
Like running a modern country from a Charles Dickens theme park
little did we know there Brexit was around the coner
Cockerell is a beast
All that history, formality, pomp and tridition... yet look at the state of politics and government and how MPs conduct themselves. It's pantomime.
Good to see Fabricant in the House for the last time
I remember watching this at the time. Bunch of weapons.
Ep 2?
Second video?
8:20 I can see Hoyle’s bare chest through that small hole
❤
14:22 is classic meme material
I do remember this documentary it was on BBC2. I did watch it.
THE building needs urgent attention, is collapsing, they have fire marshal patrolling inside the building to make sure fire doesn't start
Rats are all over the places.
Health and safety is higher risk
15:08 that chain must have been looted from India, given the time period.
They literally need to get with the times. No wonder nothing much gets done
Yeah it's snuff I trust you
What is after 59:55 parts? No sounds at all.
Obviously the episode ended…
Hi. These are known as “textless elements”. Anywhere in the show where there is text on screen, the footage without text can be found here. For use if they want to translate the text to another language.
Obviously, the broadcast is usually stopped before these so they aren’t transmitted on TV.
Oh, and they don’t need sound, they’ll just replace the vision and keep the sound that is already there in the main show.
I cant beleave it. 😂 Was enough, star wars.
33:43 John Hurt
I KINDA SEE WHAT YOU MEAN LMAO
14:00 i bet snuff ain't the only thing they're sniffing in there. every single bathroom in parliament tested positive for cocaine
Terrifying... 🙃
A fantasy palace for a country in ruins.
For a bunch of little englanders, I’m surprised they still sign bills in French.
2:50 his latex mask is falling off.
Tobias Ellwood in 2015 argued for the 10% increase to MPs salaries whilst the rest of the country got a 1% increase. On 17 July 2023 Ellwood published a video statement praising Taliban rule in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan for "vastly improving" the security of the country, introducing agricultural reforms, and promoting solar energy, while urging engagement with the Taliban to avoid Afghanistan becoming a "Chinese vassal". The statement was condemned by other Conservatives.
Don’t they still sniff stuff in parliament? 🤧
Hopefully during the course of their renovations they can enlarge the chamber of the House of Commons so that it can seat every member. It’s surprising that only 2/3 of the members can get a seat, and those who can sit are rather squeezed in.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Did he just do a bump of coke!?!?
It’s Tabak

Snuff. A type of ground, flavoured tobacco leaf used for 100s of years.
