I enjoy your content very much, but please, consider designing your thumbnails in such a way, that the text on it is not covered with the black label with the length of the video...
The implementation is questionable, but the intention is right in my opinion. people don't see themselves as a part of the planetary ecosystem or part of what we can call the human hive mind and therefore don't make the right decisions when it comes to global issues. New world order conspiracies aside, if people don't see themselves as a part of a global collective they will not make decisions that are for global human preservation.
Know what could have been a nice addition to this talk and would be very topical? Some visuals, rough sketches or artists renditions of what these things might look like...
You know this guy talks really well, it's a shame he does make nearly as good points. I feel like at any point during this video, its like having just walked in on someone else's conversation and trying decipher the topical thread. He says so much, but also so little.
I found it really hard to visualize what a geoscope would look like from the descriptions given. So is it just a big LED screen? Is it on the ground, in the sky, or both? What does this add to the data displayed? If its just about everybody all viewing the same information, displayed the same for each, couldn't a webpage achieve that?
@BigThink You should consider usíng morph-cut in premiere pro to bridge the gaps that Jonathan Keats has. It's definitely easier to listen to and less sleepifying.:)
This is great! It would seem to be easier than ever to do this today with all the data we have available. Question is, what tools are leverage-able to make this happen. Here’s my two cents: World Bank Data sets, Google Map (and Earth), Yelp Open Data, CIA factbook, and some weather databases. There’s enough here to compile and recreate a simulation of the dynamics at play on a global scale. Finally, project those fluxes unto a sphere, or a dymaxion world map using projection mapping technique. One adapted to local dynamics, and one for the whole Earth. Anyone one board?
The Zeitgeist Movement and The Venus Project are extensions of Buckys work. We must follow this path, it's the next step for humanity and we must do it or parish
Like your vids but, watch your sound levels when recording and maybe bring it down at least half a dB when mastering. Maybe it's just my monitors? No, it might be his voice. I can't tell.
I wonder when someone will tell Bigthink that on the thumbnail, the length of the video is shown in the bottom right, so we can never read the LAST DAMNED WORD OF THEIR VIDEO TITLE
Earl Johannaber For some things, yes. A sphere is not really the best viewing tool for other things where you want to see the entire surface at the same time. That's why Bucky had proposed playing World Game/Global Game on a planar Dymaxion projection Sky-Ocean World map of Spaceship Earth.
You need a big screen to show the big picture? Maybe. But the data needs to be visible in daylight hours too, or you'd exclude some people from using it, (parents for instance.)
This idea is much more feasible in 2D. I don't understand why a physical space is so important. A physical space would definitely have more impact on the person there but it also limits ease of access. The world is changing constantly so the image would be changing constantly. It makes more sense as an art installation or marketing strategy to get the idea out there IMO. P.S., I had a very similar concept for use in a fictional world, it's kind of cool to see it popped up in someone else's head. But it does makes me feel less original...
I comprehend where your idea was heading, but where as we are also fractured and so diverse, as a result of having more technical wizardry than we could possibly appreciate, to apply or dedicate to the terms of collectively cooperating, to see his vision/fusion. In today's world, it seems implausible, unless the last of us, will be the best of us.
What the fuck. This is not what geodesic domes are about. The key thing is that they allow you to build domes and spheres of infinite size with regular construction materials. 1.: Build a freakishly large dome. 2.: Build a city inside it or build it over an existing city. 3.: Profit.
Hmm. It took me some time to understand what he was talking about, at first I thought he was describing a spherical IMAX theater. I guess it's all about this "collective experience of local/global data", to objectively understand humanity's problems? Not too convinced.
akram4179 I would love to see that! Then could you get WATSON to do a Big Data project showing the history of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the history of transportation, current meteorology, planes, population mobility etc.?
Poorly argued; discusses high-level goals (global belonging) but fails to argue why a centralized visualization of such expense (and which benefits only the residents of wealthy Manhattan) is metaphysically superior to a distributed, cheap/free API model of data visualization
ExModule It was designed as a visualization tool for the UN. Also, there are some things that are better viewed/experienced on/within a sphere than on a planar map.
Yes, I agree. And the speaker implied much you said. My point was that these other counterpoints against it are salient enough but never even considered. Seems the thinker is very one-sided
Not sure why, but I'm biased against the bow tie crowd. Especially if they are a politician. Clowns might be OK, but then I'm a classic coulrophobe. I've been known to bludgeon mimes on occasion to.
This guy is awesome i love em, but im convinced if the camara pand down just a little he would be taking a dump! i cant watch this without laughing aftet i thought that. i feel really bad right now
You can't really feel like you don't like something before you actually interacted with it, so your request doesn't make much sense. Otherwise, I agree.
+pennymac16 thats true never thought about it that way honestly so thats a good point. but if you feel the way he did, claiming what he claimed why interact with someone who feels the way he stated i felt. would be much easier to not waste the time. so thats why i said what i said because i felt he was going out of his way just to be a dick. but thanks truly because you have tought me something new and i will always appreciate that.
Mike Broughton I'm always glad to be of help. To me, he asked a question and already assumed the answer. What you could have done is clearify and tell him the way you actually think. I know he may have been offensive, but I don't think being offensive back helps any conversation, really. Who knows? Perhaps behind this offense was genuine confusion or even curiosity. And what *if* he went out of his way to be a dick? In the end, you went out of *your* way to be a dick back, right? I hope I don't come off as pretentious, but these are my thoughts on this =)

"..where the playground is filled with [6:21]" - FILLED WITH WHAT?
haha but thats how they get us to click ;)
Well, that would be quite sad:D
It works.
YES! I was thinking the same thing, please fix the thumbnails!!
Let's just do this in VR and let people meet up virtually in this space. This would be cool implemented in HoloLens.
John Sherlock yes!

I agree. This could be remixed into an awesome techno song, like Symphony of Science.
I just want to shove him in a locker.
Lol, he is a philosopher XD.
Crimsonphilosophy __I am not too proud to admit I was thinking the same thing. Also, the 'atomic wedgie' comes to mind.

He seems to constantly be outside the box,
which is helpful for the rest of us who are locked inside.
Clearly refreshingly whacky.

Yes! I'm fully behind those
Seems more like parish these days

PLEASE FIX THE THUMBNAIL TEXT

I can't even imagine how bad this boy was bullied.
this would be a really good way to see the data of our earth or any community comprehensively.

One day I will live in a Geodesic dome.
i read geoscape and immediately stopped killing ayys in long war to hear about bradford's story about how it was invented. XD

Beautiful
Data park idea is genius. but, you still can't force the ignorant to care.

Holy shit, this is genius
OHHH MY GOOOOOD ..... WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ...... GET TO THE POINT
I think it's an interesting concept. It could be implemented digitally.
IT has been, on a smaller scale sos.noaa.gov/What_is_SOS/index.html
Alex Plante
Wow, that's awesome! Thanks!
Maybe we could create a virtual 200ft dome that could be accessed through virtual reality goggles.
akram4179
Nice idea!
akram4179 I would love to see that! Then could you get WATSON to do a Big Data project showing the history of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the history of transportation, current meteorology, planes, population mobility etc.?
what?
Huh?
I'm sorry to do this, but the pretentious title alone gets a thumbs down
How on earth is it pretentious?
Buckminster Fuller was cool but this seems just like a load of rambling nonsense.
Its not nonsense its actually an amazing idea.

So... Pokemon Go?
China with with its smog problems will be the first to do geodesic in a big way.

why fantasize about men shitting? weirdo
wow fuck off if you dont like it, dont read it. was a joke because of his facial expressions.

I'm The Famous Buddha.😁
This guy is trying too hard
I suspect psychedelics were involved.
Ugh not this guy again

this weird guy again
