Was expecting a 8 or a 9. But a 5? You really need to delve into the artist a little more. Watch some interviews. Take her for what she is. This is her style and her color. As you can see its all black and white. Every track was a hit for me, favorite album of the year and more.

If interviews enhance it for you, cool - but that's not about the music. No one should have to do homework to enjoy music.
You realize he's reviewing an ALBUM right? Not the artist.
the interviews made it even worse for me because she describes her songs as diary entries and all I got was diluted pop and those try-hard songs like Mother Earth where she's straning her voice so much it's uncomfortable, the lyrics are subpar as well for something that's supposed to be so "raw and dark"

Personally, I love this album. I believe that it is a great follow-up to Goddess. Songs like Weaker Girl, Poltergeist, FWM, and Trainwreck emphasize Banks' metamorphosis into a stronger woman while also showcasing her ability and openness to use her voice in various ways. I enjoy the "rapping" on Trainwreck and think the lyrics are very personal and relatable. I also think the vocal editing on Poltergeist is unique. There is a deepened vocal beneath BANKS' voice that mimics the sound of a possessive demon speaking through a person during an exorcism. Mother Earth is likely my favorite track off the album. It's very self-empowering and the editing of her vocals reminds of Aaliyah, who BANKS has admitted to being a big fan of. I understand this type of music can't be appreciated by everyone, as can no music, but I think BANKS is one of the most interesting artists out there today and I'm already looking forward to her next release!
I agree with what you said. I think the reason why I love Banks and her music is because I oddly enough connect with it. And not connect with just her music, but her as a person. I can understand her depression and other various things she's gone through. I guess that's why I will always stand by her and her music. To some it may seem boring, but I guess that's just how I like it.

Emulation? Jillian put her heart and soul into this album, and it's absolutely stunning.
Maybe he needs to stick to hip-hop... This is literally BANKS diary that he is picking apart and saying that she need to conform to what is out today to fit in. ALL her music is amazing !
Banks still made this record solid SKINTHONY HEADTANO. I would have given this at least a 7/10. Many improvements made from Goddess.
And btw where the hell is Ty Dolla $ign - Campaign and Francis and the Lights - Farewell, Starlite! ?
Except Goddess was more creative and experimental. This record was too pale, tamed and radio-friendly.

imo Goddess was far less experimental than this, even though there are more tracks, also I don't think The Alter is very "radio-friendly" at all lmao.
What a horrible excuse for a review. Didnt even mention Judas, Poltergeist, or the masterpiece of 27 hours. I don't get why people treat this guy as any sort of authority when he puts 0 effort into a lot of his videos.

The Altar is really dope. One of my fave albums of 2016
could barely even watch this whole video bc I was getting so pissed. maybe it's bc you don't know ANYTHING about the artist herself but every single song has so much emotion in it and their such a story being told. the fact you to the hilt is boring made me the most livd. that song is absolutely stunning and heart wrenching. Honestly this is one of my favorite albums of all time.

You should have listened to the actual meaning of the lyrics, they are very powerful and tell part of her story of dealing with depression and anxiety. Her music is quite good and unique in various sense. For me its a 9.99/10. And 95% of the things you said had no actual background to contrast and made no sense... Sorry but Banks created a masterpiece.

I still can't believe you gave Lana del Ray's Ultraviolence a 2. Like sure, the lyrics were awful, but a 2 means that the album was almost completely unbearable. But some of the instrumentals were really good, I just can't see why you hate it so much

The thing about Banks is her music responds extremely extremely well to Super high-end audio equipment. Make sure you've checked your tracks with really good speakers, not actually sure what you listen with.
Meg Myers is another artist that responds extremely well to the speakers, surprised you haven't reviewed her yet.

I didn't think this album was great, but I definitely think it was better than her previous album. Goddess was #deep, but The Altar did a lot better creating the dark brooding sound that Banks was going for initially.
There's certainly some duds, but it was a decent release.
Though I didn't really think about it, but what you said is true. Her voice is not unique whatsoever and completely forgettable.

Records And Reels are u serious, her voice is what sets her apart from the rest of the pop/alt sphere. I can agree with anthony about the rest of his points but not her voice. It's actually what makes me still listen to her compared to her alt-pop/rnb peers.

Phantogram's first four tracks were REALLY good. Everything immediately afterward just fell apart imo. It was so weird.
@MaxisaWeeb I kinda feel the same, except I do like Run Run Blood in the second half. I was hardly that excited for the release date since literally half of the songs had been out for weeks and hearing the rest of the album wasn't that great either.

My opinion about n the album is that it's great! This is Banks style of music which I would describe as like dark pop and it's very honest. She writes the best love songs and she may not sing many Adlibs but her voice is good. I mean look at the cover it's black and white with her not wearing any makeup and she's looking at us like take it or leave it! Key tracks: Mother Earth, Weaker Girl, Gemini Feed, Lovesick, Trainwreck

I mean I can understand what your opinion is based on, but I really can't find the reason why you gave it a 5. I consider her "soulless and low-key" vocals one of her greatest assets.
Oh and by the way, I've always thought that you should stick to reviewing albums you like. Since you are the only music reviewer at RUclips, every time you review an album that you didn't like you influence on it by making people create an idea of an artist that wouldn't be the same if they had listened to her/his music prior to listening to your sometimes destroying reviews.

Anthony, Does the alternative genre label, with whatever larger genre it attaches itself to, necessitate the music to be experimental? Alternative rock used to mean independent more than it meant experimental, it was just a coincidence that the music tended to be more experimental because there was less pressure to "fit in" to sell to a wider market. Musically, the term at one time meant a catch all for music not Punk or mainstream if mainstream really means anything when it comes to style of music. If you would argue Banks as not alternative I would go with saying it's because she is not underground instead of being not experimental. Is it a preference of yours that alternative music be experimental or a requirement for you to use that nomenclature?

This album sucked ass. Gemini Feed was hard to top, and the rest is really filler, basic, trap beats (ala Trainwreck which is literally a train wreck of a song)

Probably her best album. Her range is limited. Her delivery is not 10/10. She's in Rina Sawayama's class, not FKA, Dua or Caroline's. But this might be the only Banks album I can listen to all the way through.

She puts all her heart and we see that you never saw her on stage... that is your opinion but just try to make it more serious cause as for me you did not try to understand her vision if you say this... she is not a superficial artist
u have to admit judas is one of her most clever lyrics yet and dont get me started on tracks like trainwreck and mother earth!!! this is still the most wholesome album of hers

Lol you need someone to tell you if it's good or not? How about you listen to the album yourself and determine what YOU think about it. It's sad when people need someone to tell them what to think. I love to hear other people's opinions about things because it helps me to expand my perspective, but it's never ok to just adopt someone else's views as your own without putting in much thought on your part.

Y'all are crazy. There's been an influx of generic female art pop/alternative r&b over the past couple of years and it's getting boring
The problem is that her songs are really great but the albums dont do much as a whole package. When you think about when she came out every song was amazing but goddess was just a mix of that and wasnt exciting, unfortunately.
I thought there was a lot of generic features with this release. Nothing new really caught my attention besides the visuals of one of the music videos and the small neat editing added to the vocals. 5/10 imo
