I stared to follow your channel as soon as I found out your "go study" video (I found link on tumblr). It helped me during my first year of uni (medschool student), it gives me the right dose of motivation everytime. I can't even tell how happy I am that you post more videos now. As I study for pathophysiology exam rn, this gave me motivation again eventhough I live on the other side of the world. This video was really helpful, thank you so much for sharing your experience! When you talked about self esteem and how you wanted validation from society and self validation, I truly felt that. I am currently a senior in highschool doing IB with all science courses and although I've realized lately that I want to go into political science or study international relations, I still feel inclined and pressured to go into sciences for the wrong reasons. This video really opened my eyes!

Graduated pharmacol n toxicol major from U of T I have to say: U of T is a great university that prepares you a very solid foundation for the discipline you are in, and for future studies into grad and professional schools at any top university in the world. And it's definitely possible to get 3.8 - 4.0 especially on the final two years - the price for that is that you'd better work extra-super hard for that. It is the same with other institutes, not just U of T. And not all good students will end up in med or grad school. I have a friend, also one among top students in class, who went to Asia after graduation and now he's on a top management post and earn much more than a med doc does.
I kept stressing about going into UofT life sci then your video appeared like an answer to all of my questions. Thank you so much for this!!

10:41 As a former UofT lifesci grad, I can totally relate to this point. (Think you should include dental school and pharmacy school as well) Most students blindly come to UofT lifesci as they wrongly believe it's the right path to get into the med school and then most of them get disappointed and lost when their grades are not 4.0. You don't have to go to UofT lifesci to get into med school. In fact, you don't have to go to lifesci at all as long as you take prereq courses. and most importantly, med schools don't care which school you did undergrad.
so is it even worth it? If that's the case then I might as well decline my offer to UofT right?

wtf dotn go there i was getting a 3.6 cgpa out of 4 i swicthed to mcmaster and got a perfect gpa for my final 2 years.. now im attending uofts med school...save yourself every local here knows uft is shit...mcmaster is harder to get into aswell

idk why im here, im 12 and in gr 7. butt anywayssss. this video answered a lot of questions I had about uoft. i was in love with the concept and environment but there were a lot of hate comments and shade about the difficulty of the work there online. ty so much

@@Anonymous_7387 Its going great so far! my best piece of advice i can give to you is to be kind to yourself. University is a big step up from high school so you're going to need to reevaluate your study strategies and time management from high school which takes some trial and error so you may not get the grades you want right off the bat. Another piece of advice I can give is to not overwork yourself. Seems kind of obvious but I found myself getting too wrapped up in the competitive nature of the school and overworking myself which only ended in me being stressed all the time and performing worse due to burn out.

I know this is much later but this video popped up on my recommended since I'm thinking of going to UofT this fall. Honestly I'm so scared of the future but this video helped me feel a bit more hopeful, especially with UofT since there's so much confusing information about it. damn, I was the exact same. I thought I needed to become a doctor to "prove it to myself" when honestly it's not passion. I'm choosing to not even go into the sciences anymore because it's not what i love.

I'm a 3rd year double major in molecular genetics and fundamental genetics at UofT and here are some of my opinions on what she said. To provide some background, I went to an all girls private school in Toronto and graduated with a 95 average. I currently work a part-time job at a lab of a hospital alongside school. I am only speaking for myself and please forgive me if I got anything wrong or if I came across as offensive!
"the system is not out to get you" is not completely accurate. I admit the school is not trying to fail you on purpose, but the reputation and excellence didn't come from nothing. UofT is known for being harder and having grade deflation, and that's to weed out people who does not meet the standard of the university. The only way to be the best is to discard the mediocre. That's why we have the highest dropout rate and *[TRIGGER WARNING]* so many suicides, it's cutthroat, it's competitive, it's survival of the fittest. The system is not out to get everyone, but it is out to get those who are not the best. Our GPA scale has 85 or above instead of 90 or above as a 4.0 (only UofT has this scale to my knowledge) probably because it's hard to get stellar grades consistently in this school especially in science where it's both regurgitation and application.
From what I saw from this video, she had a generally rather positive experience in UofT. She found something she was passionate about pretty much right away (despite being unsure about her career directions which I acknowledge and is completely valid) and the structure/system of the university worked for her. This is not going to be the case for everyone, this is not going to be the case for most people actually because everyone I knew in life sci pretty much have regular sleepless nights and mental breakdowns. You are bound to feel unfairly challenged at some point, for example I needed to write a literature review about zebrafish neurogenesis for a course. Normally, only people very experienced in their fields write reviews as those are basically a summary of the knowledge and advancement of the field as of that moment. I had to write a review with practically zero background knowledge along with other assignments from other courses which made it stifling. That assignment was worth 13% of my grade and feeling inadequate like I did, it was extra stressful knowing that I probably won't do well because I literally did not know enough.
Everything else I pretty much agreed with! I especially resonated with the networking point. I got two research positions literally because I sent some emails (although position offered to emails sent ratio is really low). And experience is so important in science so try to put yourself out there, you never know what surprises are in store for you! If you want to talk more about UofT, deciding whether this is the right school for you, and for some brutally honest advice feel free to reach out!

Speaking from experience...professors will throw out a test/mid-term if the class does too well (above 80 percent average). I agree but the system isn't out to get you, but professors are all in competition to get Tenured (at the best public universities in Canada, top 20 in North America), which works against the students. I think a key thing about UofT is not to compare yourself to your peers, go to office hours (with the professors and the TAs) you need to get your ideas validated by them so feel no shame in attending as many as possible, I made a bunch of friends and study buddies at UofT without feeling like I needed to do better than them. UofT is tough, but not impossible. Completed an undergrad degree and a grad degree, the school is a completely different experience as a grad student.

I think the bell curve and the avg is real, you just can’t get a class with A- averages which means some people will get a worse grade than they would from other universities. In my opinion, if you can’t outcompete others, then UofT is not a good choice because the medical schools only select the 1% students from each university.

Hi. My name is Jann and I'm in my 3rd year studying Biochemistry, Physiology and Minoring in Immunology. I guess I'm also a classic life sci student but I was once a math major and I did some upper-level math courses. THIS IS BUT MY HUMBLE OPINION. Let's talk real for a sec. If you are a genius and/or if you know your brain, capabilities, abilities, study ethics, and your own overall system well enough to be disciplined, please, by all means, go to UofT. If your dream is to go to graduate school and do research in the future (so for example if you want to go to grad school and get a Master's/PhD in one of life sci field), you should go to UofT bc it literally is the #1 uni.
BUT if you want to go to a professional school or if you are unsure of which path to take, I don't think it's a good idea to go to UofT. It is hard here. It's brutal. Ofc it is extremely rewarding and there is so much help you can get and it's also doable for sure BUT IT IS HARD AND DIFFICULT AND HARD AND DIFFICULT. Professional schools such as medical schools, pharmacy schools, dentistry, etc, often do not discriminate which university you attended for undergrad. Most professional schools are just interested in how high your cGPA is (among other requirements). NOW this is not entirely true but sometimes, it feels like this is the case. Graduate schools on the other hand do take into consideration which university you were from. And also, oftentimes you find an adviser whose work/research you really find interesting in your 4th year of undergrad and ideally, you should be taking a course with that prof ORRR you should have done a project with that prof.

I can't agree with 'the system is not out to get you'. Most of my courses in first year kept a 65 average consciously. If the midterm was high in average they made the finals super hard. It is definitely there to get you if you are the weak link

I heard lots of negative comments regarding uoft undergrad gpa deflation. Is uoft deflation really that severe? I heard it is extremely tough to even get a C at uoft
I can only speak for the courses I've taken but I haven't experienced any unfair deflation so far. It also isn't generally tough to get even a C - it's that way for some courses but definitely not all :)
I’m really scared of doing life sci because I know I HAVE to go to grad school to get a good job. I just wonder if for some reason I decide I don’t want to go to grad school I’ll be stuck. I mean I know I can switch majors but it still worries me for some reason, to not have it all figured out.
Define “good job”. There are plenty of careers out there that you can get with just a life science degree, that you can eventually make well over 80k with. You don’t have to go to grad school after.

i got into uoft life sci and my route is to be a doc so i have to attend med school. it is the only university affordable and closer to me and my family so i have to go there. im so fucking scared 😭😭😭😭
All people Ik who got into uoft med school are from york health sciences with high gpas or ryerson biology program basically anything
I wish they did a survey to see how many UofT Life Science graduates are NOT working in any medical or hospital field. I have a ton of friends with a UofT life science degree. Some are bankers, some are real estate agents, some have gone back and did a whole different degree and one guy is driving a TTC bus. LOL. Life Science degree is weird. Yeah, you can become a doctor but most of us don't. You can do research etc but most don't pursue that path cause it isn't 'sexy' like being a doctor. My advice "Don't assume you'll be a doctor if you do this degree. Have a plan B. Cause most of us are thinking about the sexy option of being a doctor and not thinking about anything else" I choose Life Sci cause of the money doctors make, not realizing I just wasn't smart enough to get there. So I was left with "Oh crap, I hate everything else about this degree." Yeah, know yourself and what you want out of life BEFORE choosing such a specific degree.

biggest finesse ever uoft is garbage i was egtting a 3.6 cgpa out of 4 for 1st and 2nd year.. i swicthed to mcmaster and got a perfect 12 cgpa boy were the teachers so much better..now im attending ufts med school...uoft is garbage for undergrad..i know alot of people get tricked into going here...if your seeing this message this might be the last chance you have to save yourself...dont go to uoft...if you ahve any questions ask me..ive went there and know everything about it
