  • This is my entry for our Common Scoring Competition #EndlichAllein which I organized together with / martinheidenreichmusic .
We just finished our Zoom Battle Royal tonight. Big thanks to Kade Jones, 7klang and Anton Levin for joining us. Unfortunately we had technical issues, so the call wasn't recorded. But we will for sure repeat something similar very soon. Thx to my friend and co-organizer Martin for doing all the technical magic!
Here's the link to our official contest playlist where you can find all the entries:

A few words about my score: I actually had a huge time crunch, but necessity is the mother of invention and lead to a "Recycling & Referencing" thing: I recycled a reggae that I wrote last year. And I was looking for a reference piece for the climax of the movie and found it in Rachmaninoff's piano concertos. That's why I call my score concept "Recycled reggae meets Rachmaninoff reference" ;-)
What ingredients do we have here in the score: Some libraries from our sponsor Heavyocity that I used for the sound design: Damage 2, Evolve Mutation 1+2 and Symphonic Deconstruction.
I produced my reggae in a separate Logic arrangement. The vocals had to be rewritten and sung to match the title of the movie. I wanted to put that at the beginning of the movie as MY SURPRISE.
About the structure of my score: I knew from the beginning that I had to make TWO pauses: in the suitcase-packing scene and in the front door scene. Silence can be a powerful instrument and help to make the (following) music even more effective.
The piano part in the last third of the movie should increase. I achieve this with a strong accelerando (as you can easily see in the tempo map). And the sound should become more powerful with a crescendo. I combine a Noire piano from Native Instruments with the piano from the BBCSO library from Spitfire Audio. The pianos are slightly panned to the right and left with different frequencies to enhance the fear and disorientation in the final scene. At the end, a few cellos and basses help to make the wall of sound really thick.
I appreciate YOUR FEEDBACK - so write me in the comments!

Thank you so much, Kade! The great thing about our Zoom meeting last night was being able to see your reactions as you listened. And I HAVE seen your big smile. 😎

Awesome score Andreas, really like the transition from happy to horror and the piano is used so well, especially as we build towards the end. Excellent work.

Oh this is really good. I wish I could have a better sense for what works with a picture like this. I think this is the one neglected area of learning available to new media composers today. Great job and I know you have years of experience.
