I bought a soldering briefcase a long time ago that came bundled with JUST the faceplate and power supply transistors (not even assembled yet). I put the power board to the test and it passed, so I mounted the power supply/transistor board rail to the faceplate. Since my kit is incomplete, your idea of using banana plugs was very inspirational. I'm going to figure out how to incorporate my Raspberry Pi AND Arduino into this, as a mod to make it super functional. Yet maintain it's original function too.
@Tech Tangents, thank you for the great review. I know I'm late in the view-game, but this was exactly what I needed to move forward. Aces man!😊

I know this video is almost a year old so I doubt you'll see this comment but..... I had a very similar setup/case when I was in college for my EET degree back in 1999. They actually gave everyone taking the course one. We used it for all sorts of cool stuff. We had to learn how to program a 6502 using the toggle switches to directly input hex. Yeah, it was a real pain and we all hated doing it. Now though, I do that kind of crazy stuff for fun. LOL!!!

Thanks for the tutorial. I bought one of these for prototyping. Pretty handy little kit.

The "18V max" outputs are probably directly driven from the transformer. Those old things will spit out a lot more than their specified voltage when not loaded by anything :)

Thanks for the video, I have one of these and it looks really clean. Time to play with it.

I remember doing my A level electronics on something similar. 15 years on I retain very basic knowledge and not a damn clue how I'd go about designing circuitry any more, amazing what you forget.

I had to Assemble one of those in 1992 when was in DeVry for an Associates Degree in Electornics. It was interesting to find the errors in the assembly manual. I still have it and use it from time to time. Kerry

Signal gen: Sine wave is a simulated wave and has clipping on the possitive and negitive cylces. Also seen in the saw wave. At times, the square wave can have rounded corners if the individual componants is of lower quality. +18 and -18 Volt levels are adjusted on the circuit board under the main panel. If you by this in KIT form. Verify that you wire the main power switch on the HOT leg. The drawing shows it on the Neut. Also confirn electrolitic capacitors are correct polarity. In our classes (across the 2 years that I was at school), the elecrolitic capacitors sometimes had the polatiy shink wrap on backwards. They would make a BIG mess when they would explode in the mini-lab and all over everything. I still have my original manual and the changes that I provided DeVry with. I know that the changes were handed out with the new labs here in North TX. I do not know if it went all through the school sytem. The Dean of the ET program also contacted Knight Electronics and they were unwilling to update the manual or provide the corrections that we gave them. Kerry

I bought the bigger version the knight mini lab 2010 I believe they call it… I was really impressed. Able to add my battery powered oscilloscope, multimeter, TS 80 soldering iron and power bank I used to run it portably… and a few other things to a bag that I can carry with me… And I can do an incredible amount of things went on the road.

I know they can get expensive but if you look out for them on eBay somewhat regularly, you can pick up the big version for around $100, and you’ll find a mini available if you just keep an eye out over several months… And usually most of them are brand new never used.
and they cost way way way more than that if purchased no

I only found 2 companies that have the newer version Knights Electronics ML2010 for $631 to $659. If you buy used - make sure it comes with the manual. That helps with troubleshooting.

I have one I believe to be complete. The manual, tool organizer, tools, multi meter, a good amount of different electronic components,I will let it go for half of that Kerry.

A modern equivalent would be something like the National Instruments Virtualbench, which has fewer components but more test equipment

    HI
I just happen to buy me this gear like a day ago. I found it at a pawn shop for like 45 dlls. after bringing it home and taking another look I asked myself the same question...I WONDER IF YOU HAD TO BUT IT ALL TOGETHER FROM SCRATCH?

What's the software you used for the oscilloscope? And to draw the circuit?

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  7 лет назад +3

The circuit schematic software is KiCAD.
The oscilloscope is the Bitscope DSO. You have to have a compatible Bitscope product like my BS10 ( www.bitscope.com/product/BS10/ ) to be able to use it. I chose that one over others at the time for it's Linux(even RPI) support and it's Python libraries allowing for automated control.
