Went crabbing today and caught over a half of a bushel of crabs.
Crabbing has gotten a Little slow since its been so hot that makes your catch even better
airkraft1 we went again today, and we caught almost a bushel this time, but yesterday we caught a bushel and a half. but today was soooo hot, like so hot. So we're going to go back next month around my birthday, hopefully it gets cooler because they said in September that's when the crabs get bigger.

The big one caught at the 5:36 mark, that's what we down here in Louisiana refer to as a No. 1. The only two place you can regularly catch these big Blue Crabs are in Maryland and Southeast Louisiana.
guyfroml in the early part of the summer just about every crab we catch will be huge , I guess it takes a few months for crabs to migrate up the bay from where they are born
Blue crabs are by far the best tasting crab. Once you get used to eating blue crabs you'll find other crabs just don't taste as good - especially King or Dungeness will then taste fishy.

Kyle Roberts he never said anything about “dunegness Crabs”. All he said was “Blue Crabs are the best tasting crab, and once you get used to eating blue crabs other crabs like King or Dungeness crabs taste fishy”. And he’s correct I’m born and raised in Maryland. Chesapeake Bay has a lot Blue crabs but we import many of our Blue crabs from Louisiana.
My wife, 5 year old and and I got into crabbing when we lived in South Carolina. What a family experience..and delicious too. Miss those blue crabs. I live vicariously through others watching videos like these until I can get back out that way. lol Nice work!

I've never seen crabs caught by that method before. You usually see the boxy traps that stay on the bottom.
If I'm seeing this right, there are lots of hooks on the line and each hook has some sort of bait on it. Is the line laying on the bottom or is it suspended in the water? The crabs swim up and grab onto the bait?
You are close the bait is tied to the line with a slip knot ,some lines have a short bungee that the bait is tied to. The line lays on the bottom , when you check it you lift it to a hook on the boat , as you drive along the rope lifts the crabs off the bottom.

They do let go sometimes especially if they spot you going to net them , if they do they are surprisingly fast swimmers
Hi SpiritBear12, Crabs are very greedy feeders and will hang onto bait to the end because of it. I like to play with the little crabs because they are so feisty. I've had them raise up out of the water to catch the bait when I lift it and they were just snapping those tiny claws, trying to catch it. So cute. We have lived in Louisiana for most of our lives, now, and Gulf Coast crabs are delicious, too, but so expensive. There was a tiny crab on my line and I noticed it only had one claw, so I let it stuff its little mouth all it wanted. The only thing it couldn't do was hang onto the bait while it stuffed it's little mouth and that's why I let it have the bait to eat. :D We were crabbing along the shore at the Rockefeller Reserve with the grandkids and our daughter at the time.
I never did a trot line in sequence like this, this is awesome. I grew up in Maryland, but as a kid I was generally crabbed solo while the adults talked, drank beer and sent one off on a run to pick up a few dozen if I struck out* :) I fondly remember tying single necks to strings and hanging them off of every piling on the pier and painstakingly reeling them in with a net in the other hand, though. Nothing sucked worse than spending five ten minutes gently tugging that line by hand and she sees your net and bails.
*This sounds callous at first, but this was around Hendorson’s wharf in the middle of Fell’s Point. Looking back, Dad probably threw anything I caught out of that nasty water back and let me feel like the big man who caught dinner.

very neat...those will make for some good eating forsure...be cool to see the whole set up from start to end...what kind of bait are you using and what is the bait hooked on and how deep of water are you in? Chicken necks? tied to rope? does it lay on the bottom? good stuff brother...
It's chicken necks on a rope we also have snoods which is elastic cords that you tie the bait to they are tied to the rope it's keeps the crab deeper longer before it gets to the boat

How deep where you? Is 9 feet to deep to run a 600 ft trot line?
I've been doing best in 2'-5' of water . If you can find a shallow edge next to a drop off all the better.
I moved into 8-14' of water in October when the water temp dropped

This is an interesting way of catching crabs, but if you want a trap you can use on a dock or boat, check out the FloorDoorCrab Trap. It has only one moving part.

I didn't see any monsters? Back in the mid '50s They made a square/cube wire crab trap. It was about 9 x 9 x 9 inches and all four sides folded out when it hit bottom. As a boy I crabbed Glebe Creek; about 6 miles south of Annapolis. One day I pulled up my trap and didn't recognize what was in it; mainly because it was so big the sides wouldn't close up. It happened to be the largest blue I have ever seen. In order to prevent the sides from closing it had to be bigger than the trap. It was covered with so much slime I didn't want to mess with it and I threw it back.

@@airecraft1Picture a 10 or 12 year old boy barefoot, in Levis, and bareback. That's how I spent summer. The only time I wore shoes was to church. I didn't own a camera for another 20 yrs or so. I saw a comment about a guy catching a half bushel. Back in the day I could catch a full bushel in a half day. I sold it for $3.00.

My mom and I spent all the summers of my young life in Newport News, VA with her family and my cousin, Sam, and I went crabbing through the weed beds at low tide off Hampton Roads. The best days of my childhood. Sounds like we both have some wonderful memories to think upon. I was born and raised in New Jersey. Nice place to grow up, but that was back when. I don't know how it is now. Everything we knew is gone.

You can tell when a crab is coming. The line will pull lower about 2 to 3 necks before the 🦀. Did pretty well this year off Rocky Point Back River and the Bush and Gunpowder.

Sometime in the 50s while crabbing in Glebe Creek using a box trap I caught a crab so big the doors on the trap wouldn't close. The crab was covered in a mossy looking slime and was so different I threw it back. Are you guys using eel on the line? It's one of the longest lasting baits available. Later in life I also used it for trapping.

Awe, I'm jealous! I went on the Bush river last weekend. We only caught a dozen and a half keepers. Not one crab on the line. Every single one was in the traps!

Don't be jealous crabbing dropped off like a rock for us , the bait is getting chewed up but they are dropping off . All of our action is in 11' of water

There are in all bait stores in Maryland. Well at least here in Central Maryland(AA county) they are. I bought one at Fishbones in Pasadena last week. If your outside of Maryland I'd order online.

where was this located. Im located at Kent narrows close to the bridge on long point rd. You know any good spots around my area?
I've been to kent narrows once but I went on a friends boat so I'm not sure the exact spot
What you want to look for is shallow water 5' or so and find the edge where it drops off . put the line on the edge
I travel from AA county to your area frequently to go crabbing. We go right by the Kent narrows bridge. On the east side of the bridge, right in the smaller inlets/creek outside of the main part of the bay. Within the Last month both times we went we've got our 2 bushel limit within 3 hours trout-lining. Best thing is to get out there right before the sun comes up.

Couple suggestions, your line seems a bit too tight , run it so that you can't see the line coming up in front of your boat because a lot of crabs drop before you even see them. Dip the crabs between the boat and line not over it and don't lift up when bringing the net out of water hitting your line , good way to get your net snagged on the line , dip down and toward boat then up. Snood lines off your trotline also helps keep the crabs lower in water so they don't get spooked by the sun etc.

These are blue crabs. With practice they can be easy to pick check out a commercial crab picking video those ladies are quick
@@airecraft1 our dungeon s here are much bigger and fairly easy to clean. But the king crab we have a little north of here is the best so much meat so easy cracking lol... But we don't have lobster :(

I live in North Carolina now but I'm originally from Damascus Maryland the absolute fastest way to get a family together is to steam blue crabs in they damn sure not be females I love blue crap I wish I could get them here where I live which is in Charlotte we don't have anywhere that sells blue crabs what you said because North Carolina exports a lot of blue crab I miss sitting with my family and eating blue crab I could eat blue crab every day of the week for breakfast lunch and dinner it is definitely a delicacy there's nothing like having some jimmies or some surprise half soft shell crabs in your bushel
